  • A confrontation during a water polo match at the Brockwell (Brixton) Lido in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London. ..Brockwell Lido is a large, open air swimming pool in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London. It opened in July 1937, closed in 1990 and after a local campaign was re-opened in 1994. Brockwell Lido was designed by HA Rowbotham and TL Smithson of the London County Council's Parks Department to replace Brockwell Park bathing pond. It is now a Grade II listed building

  • During a journey into America's hinterlands, days after the September 11th attacks in New York and Washington DC, the breaking news flashes from Fox TV's studios that there are expected to be no more survivors found at Ground Zero. The tragic message reads 'No Signs of Life' in large red letters, read by passers-by along the on the Avenue of the Americas on Manhattan. As the news travels across the building, the camera blurs other TV pictures of live broadcasts with a sense of urgency, speed and desperation in the fruitless search for life.

  • During a journey into America's hinterlands, days after the September 11th attacks in New York and Washington DC, we see anti-war graffiti written in a circular chalk graphic on the path in front of the Lincoln Memorial of Washington DC's National Mall. The words 'Break the Cycle (of) War' appear as early morning joggers blur in the background beyond whom, the Washington Memorial is seen below the rising sun and a rising mist. Soon afterwards the graffiti was hosed away by park rangers, eager to remove anti-militarist and unpatriotic sentiments at a time before the military was about to mobilise once again with many American lives lost. In outpourings of grief, anger and patriotic rhetoric, flags were flown as never before as America sought to express their emotions and unity..

  • This memorial has been placed where young men called Steve, Si and Sammy died on the A286 Easebourne, Sussex, England, UK. If we drove past this place where someone's life ended, the victim would just be an anonymous statistic but flowers are left to die too and touching poems and dedications are written by family and loved-ones. One reads: "?I am the lucky one - my son survived - I wish so much it had been all of them.? From a project about makeshift shrines: ?Britons have long installed memorials in the landscape: Statues and monuments to war heroes, Princesses and the socially privileged. But nowadays we lay wreaths to those who die suddenly - ordinary folk killed as pedestrians, as drivers or by alcohol, all celebrated on our roadsides and in cities with simple, haunting roadside remberences.?..

As the starboard (right) wing dips, the Virgin Atlantic Airbus banks and a long exposure blurs the city lights below. A small curved portion of the passenger window, red engines and the Union Jack colours are seen. As aerodynamic design, the flying machine is a perfect gesture towards the conquest of flight, copied from the characteristics of a bird?s anatomy. As art, the mere beauty of taking to the air and maintaining level, organised speed is so routine, we rarely look our from our window to marvel at how and why.
