Although the original death certificates mention malaria, it has been widely speculated that the couple was poisoned.

An official points out directions, someone shields his eyes from the sun, a lady walks with her hands in pockets, the 239 bus to Victoria approaches and sightseeing tours sign advertises tickets. People are seen in differing scales and sizes.

With arms folded and head resting on an unseasonal coat, the man is asleep and going nowhere.

This is Lombard Street, originally a piece of land granted by King Edward I to goldsmiths from the part of northern Italy known as Lombardy (larger than the modern region of Lombardy). It is a narrow and usually dark sidestreet near the Bank of England in the heart of what is called the Square Mile - the inner-part and oldest quarter of London occupied first by the Romans 2,000 years ago. Nowadays the City of London is home to banks and financial institutions but also with a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000.

As if they are pedestrians about cross a busy highway, it is an incongruous scene of irony. Poundbury is the visionary model village that Charles, Prince of Wales sought to develop in 1993 as a successful and pioneering town near Dorchester, built on land owned by his own Duchy of Cornwall, challenging otherwise poor post-war trends in town planning and to some extent following the New Urbanism concept from the US except that the design influences are European.

Holding a single bouquet, the elderly man has located himself on the corner of Zapiecek Street (Zapiecek means place behind the stove) awaiting a buyer. With his hand on one hip, he has laid more yellow and red flowers that he has probably grown himself and is trying to make a meagre living from. But there are few people on this street this early in the oldest part of Warsaw and the walls appear to be damp, with discoloured plaster after decades of decay under a Communist government. Old paving slabs on the pavement and a cobbled road give a sense of history and wartime destruction for these streets saw many atrocities during the German occupation in WW2. This is a scene of pessimism and poverty yet with a small degree of hope in the fresh flowers.

In the foreground a car park sign states that the space is full in red letters and a local authority sign saying "Working for a better environment" is written in Chinese and English lettering. The transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to China, referred to as "The Handover" occurred at midnight on June 30, 1997, signifying the end of British rule, and the transfer of legal and financial authority back to China.

In the days after the attack on 24th April 1993, we see the pictorial evacuation of smiling faces in a portrait of Pret a Manger staff, the sandwich and lunch chain (from the French 'Ready to Eat'). The image was hung above the premises and construction workers wearing hard hats transport the picture, like hundreds of other nearby businesses whose workers carried away company property, for temporary safe storage.   • Accompanied by a City of London police officer, members of a Druid sect walk through the street as part of their Spring Equinox celebrations. The Ancient Druids were once Judges, Kingmakers, Scientists, Magicians and Priests and their modern counterparts may be viewed likewise. The word itself comes through both Brythonic tongues (Cornish and Welsh) meaning either knowledge of the oak or wizard - or wise man in Gaelic (Irish and Scots.) Druidry itself is both a philosophical viewpoint and a religious world view, although many Druids view themselves also as Pagan Priests. A druid was a member of the priestly class in Gaul and possibly other parts of Celtic western Europe during the Iron Age. Following the invasion of Gaul by the Roman Empire, the druids were suppressed by the Roman government.

  • Five elderly women on-lookers are lined against a wall outside the famous Ascot race course on Ladies' Day, the annual event on the English sporting and social calendar in June. Each are standing in order of size, from tallest (who holds a Tesco supermarket bag) to smallest and watch as two posh couples arrive for the day's racing dressed in showy dresses for the ladies and the men in formal top hat and tails. The posh lady in the front is in yellow and holds on to her straw hat on this windy summer day. Each wears their red Ascot badges allowing them entry to this exclusive royal event attended by the Royal Family and the hoi polloi of English society. We see the two sides of the class system but it is a humerous scene. There is good nature between the two groups with smiles exchanged with one couple but discomfort from those behind.

  • A woman street beggar prostrates herself on a pavement, ignored by Italian shoppers and pedestrians in Florence. As shoppers and tourists walk past in a hurry, pulling suitcases or carrying shopping, the people walk around the kneeling body whose stick lies on the ground with a paper cup to collect any spare change offered. There seems to be a mixture of indifference, pity and shame for what has become the modern face of Italian society in this once-grand medieval city. The city lies on the River Arno and is known for its history and its importance in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance, especially for its art and architecture. A centre of medieval European trade and finance and one of the wealthiest cities of the time, Florence has been called the Athens of the Middle Ages.

One middle-aged gent stands eyeing the poor man suspiciously while other men of wealth, prospects and prosperity are tall and stand erect in smart suits and polished shoes, the homeless man is hunched and dishevelled, carrying a supermarket bag - perhaps containing all of his worldly goods. It is a tragic scene of extremes between the haves and the have-nots; the rich and poor; between people with hope and those in despair. This is the City of London, near Fenchurch Street Station where the UK's insurance companies are based and it is impossible to know if any of these men in smart clothes are the same age as the poor man.

  • A schoolboy of Afro-Caribbean descent stands looking confused on a platform at Victoria mainline station in central London. The young lad looks smart in a new school uniform of cap, blazer, long trousers and polished black shoes. We might guess that it is the start of a new academic year and that he is about to attend a new school for which he needs to take a train on his own. His mother and younger and older sister are also to the far right of the picture so he may go with his elder sibling carrying a multi-coloured umbrella and a bright blue briefcase containing his lunch and a few items needed for lessons. Surrounded by adult commuters, some of who look on with mild amusement, also make await their train from the city out of town. Mostly, people mind their own business and what is a special day for the boy will become a much-travelled route.

  • Several metres above the ground, a lone protester hangs on to a street light pole in London's Trafalgar Square at the height of the famous Poll Tax Riot on 31st March 1990 as flames erupt from a building site on The Strand. Three police officers wearing helmets and riot shields brace themselves for further violence as angry crowds, demonstrating against Margaret Thatcher's local authority tax, stormed the Whitehall area and then London's West End, starting fires and overturning cars, looting stores up Charing Cross Road and St Martin's Lane. The anti-poll tax rally in central London erupted into the worst riots seen in the city for a century. Forty-five police officers were among the 113 people injured as well as 20 police horses. 340 people were arrested.

Rows of temporary marquee tents, or casetas, host families, corporations and friends into the late hours during the April Fair which begins begins two weeks after the Semana Santa, or Easter Holy Week in the Andalusian capital.

  • A man walks down a street practicing his Three-ball cascade skills. For the three-ball cascade the juggler starts with two balls in one hand and the third ball in the other hand. One ball is thrown from the first hand in an arc to the other hand. Before catching this ball the juggler must throw the ball in the receiving hand, in a similar arc, to the first hand. The pattern continues in this manner with each hand in turn throwing one ball and catching another. All balls are caught on the outside of the pattern (on the far left and right) and thrown from closer to the middle of the pattern. The hand moves toward the middle to throw, and back towards the outside to catch the next object. Because the hands must move up and down when throwing and catching, putting this movement together causes the left hand to move in a counterclockwise motion, and the right hand to move in a clockwise motion.

We see hairy chests, pectorals and biceps on-show by these young exhibitionists who parade themselves in the open-air. Slightly behind them there are also two elderly ladies looking like sisters or perhaps twins. They were once beautiful themselves and sit eagerly on a bench against a wall peering at the handsome young men, wishing they were young again. One holds a walking stick and the other grasps a bottle of wine. It is a scene of young and old, of youth and ageing beauty.

  • From the side of a road in south London, we see a group of naked female mannequins, standing and sitting with furniture on the forecourt of an office supplies business. A clearance sign stands partly-obscured but one's attention is to the physiques of each model that tends to signify whichever the fashion industry has decreed is the 'look' of the decade - whether buxom or skinny - and shop windows are therefore occupied with the clothing shapes of the day. Some women stand in that classic fashion pose, with arms at the side and one leg in front of the other, or sitting with one leg elegantly crossed: All designed to make the clothes they wear look attractive.

It will provide the main access to the Olympic park for the 2012 Games and a central 'street' will give 75% of Olympic visitors access to the main stadium so retail space and so far 95% of the centre has been let. It is claimed that up to 8,500 permanent jobs will be created by the retail sector.

The man is oblivious to the nature of the ad but it lends a sense of paradise versus reality, between the fantasy of youth, natural beauty and the reality of an older working man on the road.
