Dystopia

A short series of dystopian views around the perimeter of Stratford's 2012 Olympic Park construction site.
It has been three years since I walked Stratford's industrial estates to see the place where the Olympic Park would stand. The Olympic Delivery Authority had already posted their 'give us your properties' letters to the businesses in Carpenter's Road and Marshgate Lane but over the weekend, there was no trace of the resident workshop and factory community as I circled the vast expanses of land.
Much as airports spread themselves like concrete blankets across the land, these tracts of East London have been gobbled up by the Games. An iron curtain of high, unassailable fences topped with more CCTV cameras than might be seen in the Square Mile, screens off the Olympic Park.
Reminiscent of the Berlin Wall that divided the landscape into two economic halves, the Olympic fence is shielding the industry within while allowing glimpses of the decaying outside world.
Watch for updates as I plan to return to this area over the coming months.
