  • Two men enjoy their own versions of Blackpool North Pier, Lancashire, England. On the right, the first man is lying down on a bench with his trousers gathered around his ankles, his red bathing costume or underpants are baggy and he is looking across to something of interest while scratching his bald head. The second man on the right is not wearing a shirt and his stomach is spilling over his trousers. He has a bunch of keys attached to his belt and is pointing a video camera (camcorder) towards the shore. It is a comical scene and typical of Blackpool beach life. This northern sea side resort in the north-west of England is diverse in its transient holiday population whose behaviour can be routinely odd.

  • Four friends gather every morning in the summer at Brockwell (Brixton) Lido. This is a favourite place in the capital for varied groups of people to meet, swim or just hang out like these London taxi drivers who regularly meet for exercise sessions, accumulating sun tans during long periods in the sunshine. Bare except for their costumes, they stretch and yawn, read a newspaper and lean against a railing all the while swapping anecdotes and complaining grumpily about the state of the world near a brick wall that retains heat. Brockwell Lido in Herne Hill SE24 was originally built in 1937 at a time of coastal and city pool-building but went into decline when bathers preferred to holiday in warmer Spain. Its revival happened when local entrepreneurs re-opened the business and it now enjoys a reputation for some of the best urban swims in the UK.

  • Stopping work for a moment to pose for a portrait on the sea wall at Lowestoft, Suffolk, England, a team of the resort's lifeguards show their youth, fitness and bodies beautiful, displaying themselves in the sun of a fine summer day. There is only one female member but some are standing on the wall while others are seated in deck chairs, a ladder seat or on the hot sand near three sexy girls are are sunning themselves near a railing. Wearing bikinis one is not asleep but eyeing-up some of the alpha-male specimens on show wearing only red shorts. Meanwhile, holidaymakers walk past with ice-creams. It is a bright scene and obviously a busy time for these safety experts when tourists forever get themselves into danger in the sea and surf. Currents here make for a hazardous experience for those unable to swim out of trouble.

  • Three dads are looking their respective children of varying ages - from a baby to an infant and 8-year old. In the foreground a father reads his tabloid newspaper as his toddler sleeps contentedly in its pushchair, a dummy in the mouth and a blanket scross its body to keep out a chilly breeze. Further back another man stands waiting for his partner with a baby, also asleep in the buggy. And thirdly, a male pushes his daughter in pink up a small slope on a bicycle that uses stablizers. It is a busy scene on Paignton seafront on the Devon coast. Elsewhere children and adults of all ages walk along the esplanade enjoying an overcast and windy day on holiday. This theatrical scene is about the ideal father and the family unit.

  • Grabbing a quiet few moments in an otherwise busy environment, two people lie in long grass near the tall Canary Wharf tower structure a mile away in the background at Dockland's area of East London. On the grassy bank at Mudchute, a city farm on London's Isle of Dogs, England, the two people have been joined on this war summer afternoon by a small goat who is making its way along, munching at the lush vegetation. It is a seemingly rural location but is, in fact, an area of inner-city London, close to major construction projects, transforming Docklands into a major centre for finance and new housing.

  • With few visitors to see, a young boy pees into the water surrounding a model town at the Splendid China model village, the 30 hectares large tourist attraction in the city of Shenzhen, China. The kid aims into the water with his mother's help. In the background we see some of the 50,000 ceramic figures and scenes from a period in Chinese history and further away, modern skyscrapers in the metropolis contrasting with ancient, traditional village life. Splendid China is an attraction at the Overseas Chinese Town, Shenzhen that has scaled down replicas of China's historical buildings, wonderful scenes and folk customs. The scale models are of a 1:15 with 100 miniaturized landmarks such as The Terracotta Warriors; Great Wall; Forbidden City; Old Summer Palace etc. all laid out according to their geographic locations.

  • An unrecognisable bather wearing a stripy costume bends over awkwardly to adjust his towel on the promenade pavement (sidewalk) at Minehead, Devon. The man's reddened posterior is pointed towards the viewer and his dachshund (sausage) pet dog stands still looking away to the right, towards unseen interest. A family of four stroll along the sandy beach during low tide. It is a hot afternoon but we only see a quiet scene at this busy resort.

  • Someone's pet spaniel is enjoying the smell of another dog's faeces that has been deposited on the pavement at Newbiggin-by-the-sea in Northumberland, northern England. Using its wet nose to test its acute sense of smell, the spaniel shows great curiosity in another animals crap that has been left by the other animal's owner, rather than be collected and placed in a dog poo receptacle. The irony is that there is graffiti on the sea wall of this seaside town. The mis-spelled words 'England For Ever' have been sprayed in aerosol on the wall and we see someone's idea of a utopian England and another's lowered standards where the fouling of a public pavement is seen as acceptable.

  • Two Catholic nuns from the Asia region have walked from St Peter's Square in Vatican City, though Piazza Pio XII and are continuing down the wide street called Via della Conciliazione. Dressed in fine religious gowns complete with beautiful sashes around the waste they walk in step past a shop called Galleria Savelli that sells religious trinkets and other tourist ephemera. Sat basking in the sun is a dalmatian dog with its coat of dark spots and white skin as clean as the nuns' long dresses. Near the centre of the picture are the postcards of the Cisteen chapel and of Pope John Paul II who is seen waving at various Papal events. Also spotless is the Roman pavement which has been swept and cleaned very recently. In the distance is the magnificant Basilica di San Pietro from where the Pope addresses the weekly crowds. .

  • On its regular morning walk and wearing a matching red coat as its owner, a small dog exercises in Holmead Road in the experimental community village of Poundbury, Dorset, England. As the mutt looks at the camera, the man waits for him to stop sniffing around before moving on. The pair stand on crunchy gravel, a deterrent for would-be thieves who might be tempted to this small town where middle-class residents live. Poundbury is the visionary model village that Charles, Prince of Wales sought to develop in 1993 as a successful and pioneering town near Dorchester, built on land owned by his own Duchy of Cornwall, challenging otherwise poor post-war trends in town planning and to some extent following the New Urbanism concept from the US except that the design influences are European..

  • We are looking down from above to office and business workers who are lying down and relaxing in the grass in their lunch break at Finsbury Circus, a circular green park space in the heart of London's financial district, the City of London. Surrounding them is an art instillation of steel sheep that are incongruously grazing among the assorted people, much like they once did when London was a home to livestock en-route to market and other animals used for transport. It is a warm afternoon and in the foreground, a man wearing a dark suit has taken off his polished shoes and is lying his head on his jacket in the warm afternoon, loosening his tight tie and stretching his neck. Elsewhere, a lady is sitting eating a packed lunch with the Sun newspaper and a man a little further behind is in jeans and plimsoll shoes. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

  • A model from the Alion Couture fashion house takes part in a street parade with horses for the benefit of the media in Kensington, central London UK. We see the lower section of a horse ramp and another horse is in the background. Seen from a low angle, both the horses hoof and her foot in red high heel shoes appear to be askew in a postural echo, when two mannerisms or body language are similar. The light is blue because of the shadow both subjects are in but her shoes and matching short red dress appear vibrant in saturation and hue.

  • The legs of anonymous airline employees are seen from below a smoking screen that obscures their faces outside Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5 building. In afternoon sunshine, the women wear their airline uniforms and are sharing an off-duty puff on their cigarettes as part of their working shift at this international aviation hub. Without seeing their upper-bodies, we imagine their conversation and gossip. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

  • Mothers swing a child across a filthy puddle in the town of Nova Huta, an industrial Stalinist steel town oin southern Poland..In filthy industrial streets, the kids look undernourished in this scene of impoverished, Communist dereliction. It is horribly depressing and unhealthy place to grow up and these children are pale and yet seem happy, with smiles on their faces. The famous steel works can be seen reflected in the puddle before them. After the war, Stalin decided to build an industrial Communist fantasy just outside Krakow: a model town and immense steelworks of the future. The steelworks was named after Lenin and the town would be called Nowa Huta - or, the new steel mill. At its peak, 27,000 people worked at the Lenin Steelworks. But Solidarity grew strong forcing strikes over pay and recognition over their union. Today, it is an economic and ecological disaster area.

  • A young man has stopped by a rubbish bin to inspect his shoulder on which a nearby pigeon has recently messed on his best work suit. It is an unfortunate incident in the middle of a working day for this man in the heart of the City of London, London's financial centre - otherwise called The Square Mile. Armed with a spare tissue paper, the male cranes his neck over the shoulder to see how much of the crap remains while the flock of birds pace around on nearby grass to scavenge for crumbs left by other lunchtime office workers, otherwise enjoying warm weather in Bishopsgate Churchyard.

  • Agnolo de Cosimo Bronzino's exibition posters and QVC Tv channel street promo at Piazza Strozzi..Eleonora di Toledo (1522 - 1562), the daughter of Don Pedro Álvarez de Toledo, the Spanish viceroy of Naples. Her face is still familiar to many because of her solemn and distant portraits by Agnolo Bronzino. She provided the Medici with the Pitti Palace and seven sons to ensure male succession and four daughters to connect the Medici with noble and ruling houses in Italy. She was a patron of the new Jesuit order, and her private chapel in the Palazzo Vecchio was decorated by Bronzino, who had originally arrived in Florence to provide festive decor for her wedding. She died, with her sons Giovanni and Garzia, in 1562, when she was only forty; all three of them were struck down by malaria while traveling to Pisa.

  • Three Parisians gain an advantage by climbing higher than pavement level to watch the patriotic Bastille Day Procession from a doorway on the Avenue Champs-Élysées, Paris. The young men have lodged themselves awkwardly a metre above the ground, resting their feet on various door catches and ledges, as if floating in mid-air. On a street traffic sign the French words 'Defense de Stationner' are written which in English translates as 'No Stopping', referring to vehicles not pedestrians. There is graffiti tagging sprayed on the walls and a brown stain at the bottom of a drainpipe

  • A young girl holds railings at the site of Brussels' famous landdmark, the Mannekin Pis statuette, dressed in red...Manneken Pis (literally little man pee in Marols, a dialect spoken in Brussels, also known in French as le Petit Julien), is a famous Brussels landmark. It is a small bronze fountain sculpture depicting a naked little boy urinating into the fountain's basin. It was designed by Jerome Duquesnoy and put in place in 1618 or 1619.[1] It bears a similar cultural significance as Copenhagen's Little Mermaid. The statue is dressed in costume several times each week, according to a published schedule which is posted on the railings around the fountain. His wardrobe consists of several hundred different costumes,

  • One week after the September 11th attacks in New York and in Washington DC, two ex-US Ranger veterans visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Constitution Gardens, Washington DC. One helps another to climb up to trace the imprint of their dead friend's name, mentioned with 58,195 other recorded casualties on its polished wall. The average age of those men was 19 in the sixties and seventies. The nation was mourning those killed in the New York and Washington attacks, and the military was about to mobilise once again with many American lives lost. The Vietnam war however, remains a low-point in the nation's history and the old men who survived return to 'find' their buddies which helps them deal with the traumatic loss of their friends and their own youth..

  • Sitting drunk on a mid-town sidewalk (pavement), a construction worker wipes tears from his eyes. The man has driven from his mid-west home to offer help at the hazardous Ground Zero where for the past 4 days and nights he has been uncovering debris and human remains after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Exhausted and emotional, he was sent away for his own and the safety of others and alcohol was his first purchase. New Yorkers praised their heroes for assisting their city (and America) in their hour of need but here, passers-by stepped over him complaining of his drunken state. The now lonely man is distressed, tormented and psychologically fragile but gets no help. With his few possessions, his hard hat and flag, mask and cans of Budweiser we see a man at his lowest ebb.

  • Beneath the giant, solid pillars of the Bank of England in the heart of London's financial district - the ancient Square Mile - a man dressed in a traditional pinstripe suit has stopped to make a phone call or check for messages. Halting his journey along this street he has opted to stand in line with a traffic no waiting cone and also near double-yellow lines that restrict parking or stopping. Without the cone or lines this scene would otherwise be without colour - the columns of this financial institution and the pavement (sidewalk) are drab - so the welcome yellow gives this picture more interest. We only see the man from the rear view and so he remains anonymous, a small person set against the scale of a large-scale financial landscape..

  • Having just unearthed more bodies from layers of volcanic ash and pumice, an archaeologist's assistant pauses for a cigarette, kneeling beside a victim of the AD79 eruption of Mount Versuvius over the ancient Roman town of Pompeii. Buried beneath huge amounts of toxic material this person was suffocated and crushed from falling debris. Preserved in a shell of volcanic material it is to be removed from this site on top of a villa roof where, it is calculated, this citizen was one of the last to die, having climbed 4 metres above ground level to await its fate. The Italian man ears a red t-shirt and holds a pick that has scraped and brushed away the soil to reveal the human form which also shows another body beneath. Others litter the rooftop too proving that many survivors of the first eruption perished after the second many hours later.
