  • A detail of a 1930s house gable in the Essex seaside town of Frinton-on-Sea. Well-painted white woodwork looks fresh and clean despite it being 90 years old. The property is shown as Essex House with the date of its construction as 1936. A gable is the generally triangular portion of a wall between the edges of a sloping roof. The shape of the gable and how it is detailed depends on the structural system used (which is often related to climate and availability of materials) and aesthetic concerns. Thus the type of roof enclosing the volume dictates the shape of the gable. A gable wall or gable end more commonly refers to the entire wall, including the gable and the wall below it.

  • The runners and riders for the 5th and 6th races during a horseracing meeting at the British-built Kolkata racecourse, on 18th November 1996, in Kolkata, India. The race course was built in 1820 and is maintained by the Royal Calcutta Turf Club (RCTC), founded in 1847 in Calcutta, British India (now Kolkata, India) and became the premier horse racing organisation in India during the British Raj. At one time it was the governing body for almost all courses in the sub-continent, defining and applying the rules that governed the sport. During its heyday the races it organised were among the most important social events of the calendar, opened by the Viceroy of India. During the 1930s the Calcutta Derby Sweeps, organised by the club, was the largest sweepstake in the world. It is still an exclusive private club and still operates the Kolkata Race Course.

  • The four great chimneys of the Grade II listed Battersea Power Station rise to become one of South London's most notorious landmarks. In the foreground on Battersea Park Road is construction hoardings that yew hedges that act as an incongruous background with a bent phone box, recently damaged in a collision, and a bus stop at which a passenger awaits the next bus. Once a coal-fired power station located on the south bank of the River Thames, near Battersea in London, Battersea A Power Station was built first in the 1930s, with Battersea B Power Station to its east in the 1950s. The two stations were built to an identical design, providing the well known, four chimney layout. The station was decommissioned from generating electricity in 1983. The was used in The Beatles' 1965 movie Help! and on the cover of Pink Floyd's 1977 album Animals.

  • A view along the fuselage of a DC3 Dakota, from its tail aileron to its propeller. Pointing upwards as it sits on a low tail wheel and with one of its 4 propellers still against a blue sky, we see the plane painted in the colours that many appeared in during the D-Day landings in June 1944, from where paratroopers jumped out for the eventual invasion of German-occupied France. The Douglas DC-3 is a fixed-wing propeller-driven airliner. Its speed and range revolutionized air transport in the 1930s and 1940s. Its lasting impact on the airline industry and World War II makes it one of the most significant transport aircraft ever made. Many DC-3s and converted C-47s are still used in all parts of the world. The designation "DC" stands for "Douglas Commercial".

  • A cross in sunlight shows the Katyn memorial set in a forest in Warsaw, Poland. The Katyn war cemetery is a Polish military cemetery located in Warsaw commemorating the massacre of Polish officers during the second world war although the town of Katyn is a small village near Smolensk, Russia. It contains the remnants of 4,412 Polish officers of the Kozelsk prisoner of war camp, who were murdered in 1940 in what is called the Katyn massacre. The soldiers were buried in six large mass graves. Until 1991 it was known that the Nazis were responsible but after the end of Communism did they Russians admit that Stalin's forces killed the Poles. There is also a Russian part of the cemetery, where an undisclosed number of victims of the Soviet Great Purges of the 1930's were buried by the NKVD. The cemetery was officially opened in 2000.
