  • An Evening Standard newspaper headline announces the fury of London commuters' at a 3-day underground tube strike in September 2007. This is Victoria mainline station during a summer heatwave. It's a transport hub for tube lines, buses and overground train routes and we also see a stressed and exasperated-looking commuter walking past this kiosk with a Starbucks coffee container in hand, needing to get into work rather than take public transport. As a result of the industrial action, the busses are full so the quickest way of reaching one's destination is to walk.

As a result of the industrial action, the buses are full so the quickest way of reaching one's destination is to walk. People near Victoria Station, a transport hub for tube lines, buses and overground train routes so we see businessmen in dark suits during the heatwave, women striding along towards their transport home and we look up at them from a low-angle in the street. One man seems to pause from indecision while others are more confident about their fate and direction in life.

  • Commuters to-and-fro in the heat of a city summer during a 3-day underground tube strike in September 2007. This is Victoria mainline station during a summer heatwave. It's a transport hub for tube lines, buses and overground train routes and we see masses of pedestrians and buses reflected in the glass of a bush shelter window. As a result of the industrial action, the buses are full so the quickest way of reaching one's destination is to walk. An official points out directions, someone shields his eyes from the sun, a lady walks with her hands in pockets, the 239 bus to Victoria approaches and sightseeing tours sign advertises tickets. People are seen in differing scales and sizes.

  • At the height of financial uncertainty, we see from a low pavement angle investors queueing outside the Maddox Street branch of the troubled Northern Rock Bank, off Regent Street, Mayfair, in September 2007. Their hard-earned savings appear to be in jeopardy after the bank announced an emergency loan from the Bank of England. Despite reassurances from officials who insisted that the Bank which has £113bn in assets, was not in danger of going bust, concerned men and women wait in line, some with their faces on view and reading newspapers or more commonly, wishing to remain anonymous and keeping their backs to reporters and cameras. The rush of customers demanding their investments almost spelled the demise of the bank with over £2bn removed from accounts in a few days. Northern Rock struggled since money markets seized up over the summer. .

  • Wearing a pink-flowered safety helmet and a red reflective safety bib saying 'Easy Rider', a pig-tailed nine year-old girl cyclist examines a map of Greater London during the first traffic-free Hovis-sponsored event called 'Freewheel' when many streets in the city were closed off to cars for one Sunday, 23rd September 2007. This girl has already ridden 6 miles from the Peckham area of South London and before the day is finished, will have pedalled 10 miles more on this late-summer Sunday - starting and finishing in Peckham Rye Park. The map shows major roads in blue and minor streets in yellow with the River Thames snaking horizontally through the capital.

  • Wearing a long beard of a strict Musilm, Anjem Choudary is a deputy and main UK spokesman of the Islamist group al-Muhajiroun whose leader, Omar Bakri Mohammad is a radical who caused controversy after the London attacks of July 2007, declaring that the only people he blames for the bombings are the government and British public. Choudary, a lawyer by profession, stands outside in the street in Leyton, north-east London England. There are few people in the background but Choudary commands much respect among activists in the UK. He organised and was fined in court for the Danish Embassy rally in February 2006 at which participants called for the massacre of those who insult Islam though Choudary refutes knowledge of who wrote such threats.

  • Two brokers working at the London International Financial Futures Exchange (LIFFE) have finished trading for the day and are resting chatting to colleages beneath a large old-fashioned dot matrix sign telling us the market's value at the close of business. They both wear orange jackets denoting their respective employers. They sit on the trading floor, otherwise known as the Pit where Derivatives, Options, Futures and their contracts are exchanged in a frenzy of arm and hand expressions which communicate prices and quantities. The LIFFE exchange was synonymous with Thatcherite capitalist money-making ethos in the City of London of the 80s and early 90s before the takeover by Euronext in January 2002. It is currently known as Euronext.liffe. Euronext subsequently merged with New York Stock Exchange in April 2007.
