  • Sitting drunk on a mid-town sidewalk (pavement), a construction worker wipes tears from his eyes. The man has driven from his mid-west home to offer help at the hazardous Ground Zero where for the past 4 days and nights he has been uncovering debris and human remains after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Exhausted and emotional, he was sent away for his own and the safety of others and alcohol was his first purchase. New Yorkers praised their heroes for assisting their city (and America) in their hour of need but here, passers-by stepped over him complaining of his drunken state. The now lonely man is distressed, tormented and psychologically fragile but gets no help. With his few possessions, his hard hat and flag, mask and cans of Budweiser we see a man at his lowest ebb.

  • Pilots belonging to the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, walk in line from their parked Hawk jet aircraft during their two-day visit to the airfield at the Payerne Air 04 show, Switzerland. It is a perfect day for aerobatics with blue alpine skies during the teams' two-day visit to the Swiss airfield. Payerne is home of the Swiss Air Force who host the cream of international aerobatic display flying every September to 275,000 spectators over a weekend. European display teams and air forces gathered to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Swiss military aviation. The team walk towards waiting transport wearing the red flying suits, synonymous with an ambassadorial role for the UK and recruiting tool for the RAF's pilots of the future. Since their birth in 1965, they have performed over 4,000 shows in 52 countries.

  • A young skateboarder leaps into the air beneath the huge memorial to the German Communist leader Ernst Thalmann, the leader of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) during much of the Weimar Republic. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1933 and held in solitary confinement for eleven years, before being shot in Buchenwald on Adolf Hitler's orders in 1944. The Ernst Thälmann Pioneer Organisation, consisting of the Young Pioneers and the Thälmann Pioneers, was a youth scouting-styled organisation of schoolchildren aged 6 to 14, in East Germany. Its motto was" "Für Frieden und Sozialismus seid bereit - Immer bereit" ("For peace and socialism be ready - always ready") but the Pioneers were disbanded in 1989 after early protests here in Leipzig at the same time as the Berlin Wall and the Socialist state's fall.

  • Attending to a floral memorial of Lillies in a 5th Avenue store front in mid-town Manhattan. In the days following the September 11th attacks, a store window dresser is seen through the glass with Fifth Avenue reflected behind. The words "In Memory and Gratitude" are written in block capitals on the window and a passer-by walks briskly past the large floral display and the large US flag that hangs vertically in mourning for those killed and those heroes helping to uncover their remains in the debris. America sought to express their anger and patriotic unity by installing these shrines in the frontages of businesses and in homes as New Yorkers try to pick up the pieces of their lives.
