  • With great concentration, Flight Lieutenant Dan Simmons and Squadron Leader David Thomas of the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's Royal Air Force aerobatic team, meticulously brief themselves for their forthcoming air display at the RAF College at Cranwell, Lincolnshire. The two pilots, dressed in their famous red flying suits, stand out from a small group of Ministry of Defence (MoD) drivers who stand around with time to spare, some looking skyward at other overhead aerobatics. The 'Synchro Pair' (Reds 6 and 7) are the two pilots whose aircraft make the most dynamic of the manoeuvres including a cross called the Opposition Barrel Roll where both pilots aim at each other at closing speeds of 760 mph.Since 1965 the Red Arrows have flown over 4,000 such shows in 52 countries.

The gloomy mist is obscuring buildings and hangars in the background and flying has been cancelled so an eerie stillness has settled on the normally busy facility that would normally host up to six red Arrows sorties (flight) a winter's day. Communications with remote areas of the aerodrome is often necessary to alert the air traffic control tower. Only qualified personnel are to use this system, just as drivers must have undertaken an MoD vehicle course.  .

  • A half-eaten bar of chocolate has been left on an armchair supplied by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) is seen in a crew room at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. Much of the facilities at RAF and MoD outposts are basic and spartan leaving small luxuries to be imported by visiting air and ground crew. In this case, the 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, are occupying this building while on their detachment to the British Mediterranean base while putting the finishing touches to their air display routines ready for PDA (or 'Public Display Authority'). After passing this test, they are then allowed by senior RAF officers to perform as a military aerobatic show in front of the public - following a special test flight when their every move and mistake is assessed and graded. Until that day arrives, their training and practicing is done in the privacy of their own airfield at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, UK or here in the glare of Akrotiri. The pilots are called Reds and their ground crew, the Blues after their summer air show uniforms. Since 1965 the team has flown over 4,000 air shows in 52 countries.

Standing in mid-day sun, the troops are dressed in ISAF desert uniform, alongside a company-built Watchkkeper an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Watchkeeper WK450 is a £800 million contract awarded in July 2005 to Thales to provide the British Army with  or all weather, Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) use. It has a weight of 450 kg and a payload capacity of 150 kg, and will have a typical endurance of 17 hours. The MoD's newest and most sophisticated surveillance and targeting drone, the Watchkeeper, is undergoing trials at Aberporth in west Wales. While the arguments over America's policy of "assassination by drone" rage across Pakistan and Afghanistan, fuelling public concern over the cold-eyed automation of warfare, the future of UAVs is quietly taking shape here on the Welsh coast, where there is daily proof that UAVs and manned aircraft can co-exist in British airspace.

Opened in 1942, it was used by both the Royal Air Force and United States Army Air Forces during World War II and the United States Air Force during the Cold War. After the Cold War ended, it was closed in 1993. The airfield was also known for the Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp held outside its gates in the 1980s. In 1997 Greenham Common was designated as public parkland.

Performing the brief safety walk-around, Stevens bends at the waste to avoid the aeroplane's low aileron despite wearing a helmet, full flying suit, boots, life-vest and anti-g-pants. Flying still continues despite rainclouds in the gloomy Lincolnshire sky.

The Suppliers ensure possessions and spares are stored taking many weeks of meticulous planning. .

For example, they will need to perform 25 straight-kneed sit-ups at a 45° slant both within 60 seconds to pass. 60,000 boys aged between 17-22 (or 25 for those educated enough to become clerks or communications specialists) report to designated recruiting stations in the hills each November, most living from altitudes ranging from 4,000-12,000 feet. After initial selection, 7,000 are accepted for further tests from which 700 are sent down here to Pokhara in the shadow of the Himalayas. Only 160 of the best boys succeed in the journey to the UK. The Gurkhas have been supplying youth for the British army since the Indian Mutiny of 1857.

  • An Officer Cadet at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst is loaded into the back of a British Army Land Rover ambulance to join the downfacing trainers of a collapsed colleague, after retiring  from an endurance race. Recruits run a 5 mile steeplechase around the Academy grounds to assess individual stamina and accumulate team points. Sandhurst is an institution which has bred staff officers since 1800. Today it trains future officers for the demands of leadership and military understanding of military understanding,. Students are tested for their command instincts, intellect, strength of character and physical endurance often under great psychological pressure - the demands asked of them in modern warfare. Failure in this test might not necessarily mean dismissal though perserverence or refusal to give up won't harm their prospects.

Built in 1932, it was on a voyage from Yugoslavia to Jeddah in 1976 with a cargo of timber. She ran aground in a storm at Akrotiri Peninsula, but no lives were lost.

In front of a local crowd at the airfield the team work their way through a 25-minute series of display manoeuvres that are loved by thousands at summer air shows. After some time off, spare days like this are used to hone their manual aerobatic and piloting skills before re-joining the air show circuit. Since 1965 they've flown over 4,000 shows in 52 countries.

  • Ending France's Bastille Day parade, the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, leave a trail of smoke over the pyramid peak of the Louvre art museum in the centre of Paris. Leaving vapour trails of red, white and blue smoke to mark the 100th anniversary of the Anglo-French Entente Cordiale. They were chosen by the French authorities to close the fly-pasts. British armed forces paraded in the historic parade for the first time. Under blue skies on a perfect summer day, the squadron lined up in their classic fly-past 'V-shape' called 'Big Battle', following the straight line of the Champs Elysees then eastwards over the Parisian suburbs. Personnel from four British military units were present and French Air Force jets performed their own fly-past to open the parade, while the British Hawk jets of the Red Arrows had the honour of completing it. .

  • Seen from the cockpit of another Hawk of the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's Royal Air Force aerobatic team during an In-Season Practice (ISP) training flight near their base at RAF Scampton. Seen through the explosive Plexiglass cockpit of a tenth plane, we look sideways towards other pilots diving downwards as they their machines after a loop, their organic white smoke pouring from their jet pipes to emphasize their paths through the air. In front of a local crowd at the airfield the team work their way through a 25-minute series of display manoeuvres that are loved by thousands at summer air shows. After some time off, spare days like this are used to hone their manual aerobatic and piloting skills before re-joining the air show circuit. Since 1965 they've flown over 4,000 shows in 52 countries.

  • While visiting London's tourist sites, a young boy of about 5 years-old spends time at Horse Guards where a soldier from the Household Cavalry, also dressed in a deep red coat, stands motionless and at-ease. It is a bright day and the gray stonework amplifies the scarlett uniform tunics as the boy has his picture taken by family. The British Household Cavalry is classed as a corps in its own right, and consists of two regiments: Life Guards (British Army) and the Blues and Royals (Royal Horse Guards and 1st Dragoons). They are the senior regular regiments in the British Army, with traditions dating from 1660.

They turn at a gentle angle trailing white organic smoke  before reforming in front of a local crowd at the airfield and working through a 25-minute series of display manoeuvres that are loved by thousands at summer air shows. Their objective is to appear perfectly spaced from a ground perspective. Freshly-ploughed English fields with properties, roads and hedgerows are seen below.   • In a red helmet, Squadron Leader Spike Jepson, team leader of the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, plunges into the blue  Mediterranean waters for his annual Wet Drill exercise during Spring training in Cyprus. We see the pilot, small in the picture surrounded by frothing, blue water that engulfs his small body making him look vulnerable. There are lines attaching him to a boat ensuring his safety. The rehearsal is to practise a helicopter recovery after a fast-jet ejection over the sea. His RAF-issue life vest (containing a vital life-raft) has inflated when in  contact with the salt water and helps him stay afloat in the cold water. This yearly event is required of all flying personnel to ensure that any accident over water can reach a positive outcome - by the rescuing of an expensively-trained pilot or navigator. .

  • A red Hawk jet aircraft belonging to the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, is parked outside a nearby hangar on the concrete 'apron' (where aircraft park) at the squadron's headquarters at RAF Scampton, Loncolnshire. A member of the team's support ground crew (the Blues because of their distinctive blue overalls worn at summer air shows) prepare to refuel as the last daylight fades and artificial light from the hangar illuminates the scene. Their winter training schedule is both rigorous on the aircraft and demanding on the pilots who will typically fly up to six times a day in preparation of the forthcoming summer when they display at 90-plus air shows. After the day's flying, the engineers' night shift arrive to service and maintain the aging fleet of 11 aircraft. .

  • A boy soldier has collapsed on the ground suffering from fatigue and dehydration on a rigorous march conducted as a squad of soldier recruits, over undulating terrain with each candidate carrying a bergen (back pack) weighing 35 pounds (plus water) and a weapon. Two senior trainers haul the buy up who fell under the weight of his backpack and weapon carried on a hot day and without drinking enough fluids. The 10-mile march must be completed in 1 hour and 50 minutes and it forms part of the 14-week long Pegasus (P) Company selection programme that recruits wanting to join the British Army's elite Parachute Regiment, held regularly at Catterick army barracks in Yorkshire, need to pass (with other tests) before earning the right to wear the esteemed maroon beret.

  • Crew room classroom of the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team at their RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire headquarters. Using two scaled model Hawk jet aircraft he shows how their formation is to be flown on their next training flight. Five autumn and winter months are spent teaching new recruits manual aerobatic display flying while the older members (who rotate positions) learn new disciplines within the routine. Their leaning curve is steep, even for these accomplished fast-jet aviators who had already accumulated 1,500 hours in fighters. By Summer they need every aspect of their 25-minute displays honed to perfection. In this meeting room they meet before and after every flight discussing safety, merits and failures.
