  • Empty chairs and open Bibles, all bathed in yellow artificial light make this airport chapel in Frankfurt am Main, Germany a European modernist haven from the chaos of global air travel; an escape from delays, terrorism and overall fears of flying. Predominately Christian with small corners for Muslim believers, the new modernism at Frankfurt/Main reflects a strong European tradition of functional design ? far removed from the drab, dourness of many similar American facilities. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903. .

  • It is precisely 8am on a weekday morning in 1993 when ordinarily, commuters would be filling this station concourse at Liverpool Street in central London and train services arriving and departing every minute throughout the day. There are however, no rail journeys this day because a national rail strike has been called by the rail unions. The information board is blank, displaying neither trains or platforms. The cancellations have disrupted thousands of commuter journeys both to and from the capital.

There is a tube strike and capacity is vastly reduced so numbers are being strictly restricted while the tube unions ask drivers and staff not to report for duty. Passengers queue patiently behind the barriers, their faces seen with resigned expressions, as Londoners are typically want to do.

  • Seen through a glass screen, we see a crowd of passengers - a mixture of business and holiday travellers - awaiting the departure of their commercial flight from Frankfurt am Main international airport, Germany. Reflected lights and other windows merge into this scene of European air travel where the everyday misery of delays and disruption affect millions on a daily basis. Some people are still seated while the more enthusiastic wait in line, queuing for the imminent departure. Frankfurt is also a sprawling hub for the German state airline Lufthansa. • This memorial has been placed where a man called 'Lee' died on the A3130 Tickenham Road, Somerset, England, UK. If we drove past this place where someone's life ended, the victim would just be an anonymous statistic but flowers are left to die too and touching poems and dedications are written by family and loved-ones. One reads: "?Do not stand at my grave and weep/I am not there, I do not sleep.? ?I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in a circled flight.? From a project about makeshift shrines: ?Britons have long installed memorials in the landscape: Statues and monuments to war heroes, Princesses and the socially privileged. But nowadays we lay wreaths to those who die suddenly - ordinary folk killed as pedestrians, as drivers or by alcohol, all celebrated on our roadsides and in cities with simple, haunting roadside remembrances.
