  • Walking past a boarded-up shop on a Liverpool street corner, a middle-aged woman passes graffiti scrawled by local youths on the doors. The scene is of a poor area needing investment but this is an area of the city known for high crime and areas of dereliction where the community are treated as second class citizens.

  • A young girl of Asian descent pushes her doll in a pushchair uphill in an empty terraced Dingle Liverpool street. Walking up the steep pavement she pauses to look at the viewer in her pink dress. There is no-one else in the landscape and the little girl is quite alone in this inner-city scene. Dingle (known locally as the Dingle) is an inner-city area of Liverpool, Merseyside, England. It is located to the south of the city, bordered by the adjoining districts of Toxteth and Aigburth. At the 2001 Census, the population was recorded at 13,246. • In a rear alleyway between poor terraced housing in Liverpool, England, we see many black bin-bags are left against industrial brick walls awaiting collection during the Merseyside dustmans' strike of 1991. The cobbled alley of these 'back to back' houses are in a poor area, south of the city centre and home to deprived families. The industrial action against the local authority was a health problem for Liverpool during the summer of '91 when streets filled with rubbish. Vermin like rats ran around and public city parks filled with every kind of refuse and garbage. Few of these back-to-backs now exist after being cleared to allow construction of high-rise tower-blocks and flats.

  • Two window cleaners safely attached to an outside cradle, wash the large panes of glass at a building at Broadgate in the City of London. While stretching with his long sponge into the corner of this window, one worker on the left is wiping soapy liquid onto the grimy glass before cleaning it off with a squeegee. His colleague on the right is communicating with the cradle operator in the building's roof, way above these men, in order to raise the cradle and allowing the men to achieve the correct operating height. Far below them is the capital's Square Mile, London's financial and oldest area. The famous dome of St Paul's Cathedral can be seen most prominently although it is a grey day across this modern metropolis skyline.

  • A mid-morning mist sweeps across the seafront's South Beach at Scarborough, the seaside town in North Yorkshire. Kids run about on the wet sand, some leaping and some just carrying buckets of salt water for sandcastles elsewhere. With the freedom and open-space, children who perhaps live in bleak industrial towns in northern England can enjoy the fresh-air on this north-eastern coast. Their reflections are also seen on the shiny sand and although it appears to be as grim as their home may be, it is in fact a warm day but the daily sea fogs that roll across this beach, a microclimate exists and is unique to this area.

  • Surrounded by black bin-bags during the Merseyside dustmans' strike of 1991, two young "Scouse' girls lean against a brick wall in a rear alleyway between poor terraced housing in Liverpool, England. There is an older, taller white teenage girl with blonde hair dressed in a blue shell-suit and a shorter and younger friend of Asian-descent. Looking suspicious and amused at something across the cobbled alley of these 'back to back' houses in a poor area, South of the city centre, home to deprived families. The industrial action aginst the local authority was a health problem for Liverpool during the summer of '91 when streets filled with rubbish. • An actor plays the part of an office worker, toiling away at a desk-top PC while outside in the courtyard of the Z33 art gallery in Hasselt, Limburg Belgium. The lady artist sits typing at an imaginary work station with jackets hanging on a coat stand and with her area marked out in sand on the gravel. This incongruous scene is played out during the gallery's 'Werk Nu' (Work Now) exhibition that reflected upon the concept and meaning of 'work' in our present society, with issues such as flexibility, mobility, motivation, significance, and the work-life balance are dealt with. The art works in 'Work Now' are direct or ambiguous, whimsical.

  • The message in graffiti lettering "Don't come here they attack you" has been written on a wall outside a house in the Toxteth area of Liverpool, Merseyside England. Flat 1A has a bright red-painted door and red bricks in an otherwise poverty-stricken district of this poor inner-city where crime and social deprivation has become the normal way of life for Scouses (someone from Liverpool). We see the red theme carried throughout this image of threat and ill-discipline where survival is clearly hard. These 'back to back' terraced houses have largely been demolished during Liverpool's regeneration during the 60s and 70s though some remain, accommodating unfortunate families on low-income.

  • Standing on the back of his utility vehicle, a man empties the contents of his dustbin onto a growing pile of rubbish in a recreation park in the otherwise affluent Allerton area of Liverpool, Merseyside, England, during the Merseyside dustmans' strike of 1991. Adding to this mountain of refuse, the 'Scouse' man (someone from Liverpool) is seen surrounded by black binliners and items from domestic homes which have been allocated this public space to become a temporary landfill. The industrial action aginst the local authority - over pay and working conditions - was a health problem for Liverpool's population during the summer of 1991 when streets filled with rubbish. Vermin like rats ran around and public city parks such as this were filled with every kind of refuse and garbage.

  • High above the streets of Old Lisbon, we see a Portuguese lady leaning out of her window to hang out her washing on the line that is attached to her home's exterior wall in the Bairro Alto district - or Upper City - the oldest of Lisbon's residential quarters. Items of underwear, socks and other miscellaneous clothing have been strung out on the line that is now pegged along the crumbling wall's surface with faded, peeling plaster and paint. A TV aerial has also been fixed precariously by the window and it's shadow can be seen in the sunshine which is strong and side-lighting the scene which has a warm, morning glow about it. Lisbon's Bairro Alto quarter is located above Baixa and developed in the 16th Century. Suffering very little damage in the earthquake of 1755, it remains the area of most character and renowned for its residential and working quarter for craftsmen and shopkeepers. At night, life takes on a diferent personality when bars and up until the 60s, prostitution gave the district a bad reputation in the past but nowadays tourists and the chic frequent its streets and traditional 'Fado' (classical Portuguese opera) bars. ...

  • Seen low from behind stage, a male voice choir are lined up to sing during their performance at an open-air temporary auditorium during the Lambeth Show, an inner-city cultural and family event held annually in Dulwich Park, a leafy suburb of South London. The choristers are dressed in white shirts which are untidily untucked from their dark trousers (pants). Their heads echo the purple, yellow and red spots from the overhead lights. The front of stage is covered by a curved ribbed roof structure that arches over the mens' heads. The singers look small in scale to the cavernous height of this ceiling, occupying a small percentage of the frame. We cannot see the choir's conductor, nor their audience but we get an impression of wide area in which to project their voices

Wearing his bathing costume, a young adventurer clambers over rocks in the Gross Enz river in Germany's Black Forest. The lad of 10 crouches to better balance himself, carefully placing his bare feet on the slippery rock's surface as he emerges from the chilly mountain water. It is high summer and we can see the boy backlit by the glare of strong sunlight in the background. The Gross Enz river rises in Enzklosterle in Baden-Württemberg and is an eventual tributary of the Neckar. Geologically, the Black Forest consists of a cover of sandstone on top of a core of gneiss. During the last glacial period, the Würm glaciation, the Black Forest was covered by glaciers.
