  • With few visitors to see, a young boy pees into the water surrounding a model town at the Splendid China model village, the 30 hectares large tourist attraction in the city of Shenzhen, China. The kid aims into the water with his mother's help. In the background we see some of the 50,000 ceramic figures and scenes from a period in Chinese history and further away, modern skyscrapers in the metropolis contrasting with ancient, traditional village life. Splendid China is an attraction at the Overseas Chinese Town, Shenzhen that has scaled down replicas of China's historical buildings, wonderful scenes and folk customs. The scale models are of a 1:15 with 100 miniaturized landmarks such as The Terracotta Warriors; Great Wall; Forbidden City; Old Summer Palace etc. all laid out according to their geographic locations.

  • In the foreground a local dog lies down in the afternoon heat on rutted ancient Roman flag stones while in the background tourists walk down the old highway in Pompeii, Italy. Next to his exhausted body, the grooved ruts carved by wooden wheels can still be seen next to a large stepping stone which let chariots ride over the stone yet allowed pedestrians to step over the road. Pompeii is a ruined Roman city near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania. It was completely buried during a catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius on 24 August 79 AD. The volcano covered Pompeii under many metres of ash, and it was lost for over 1,600 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1748. Since then, its excavation has provided an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city at the height of the Roman Empire. Today, it is a main tourist attraction of Italy and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pompeii has become a popular tourist destination; with approximately 2.5 million visitors a year, it is the most popular tourist attraction in Italy.

  • The zoomed lights of Macau's Hotel Lisboa Casino. Macau's biggest attraction is its gaming business, especially after this colony reverted from Portuguese to Chinese rule and mainline Chinese flocked here. Its gambling revenue in 2006 weighed in at a massive £3.6bn - about £100m more than Las Vegas. Though many forms of gambling are legal here, the most popular game in the casinos is baccarat, which generates over two thirds of the gaming industry's gross receipts. The official languages are Portuguese and Chinese and the Macau Special Administrative Region, more commonly known as Macau (Macao) is one of the two special administrative regions (SARs) of the People's Republic of China (PRC), along with Hong Kong.

  • RAF Fylingdales is a British Royal Air Force station high on Snod Hill in the North York Moors, England. Before their demolition by Ministry of Defence contractors this early attack warning Cold War facility, consisted of three 40-metre-diameter 'golfballs' or geodesic domes (radomes) containing mechanically steered radar. They became a local tourist attraction and coach tours drove past the site listening to the interference on radios emitted by the radomes. They have since been replaced by the current tetrahedron ('pyramid') structure and is still a secret location. Its Motto is "Vigilamus" ("We are watching"). It is now a radar base and part of the United States-controlled Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS)...

  • A holy Sadhu man attracts a crowd on the Maidan in central Calcutta, India. Near some ballustrades built by the British during the last years of the Raj, the man is leaning forward on his knees and his head is buried in gravel. Practicing Tapas or Niyamas, is one form of Austerity that holy men like this perform to cleanse themselves of bad thoughts. It is a conservation of energy; an increase of power in the system by sense control; a process of positive-thought, self-imposed hardships and inner-strength - all to gain a higher being for oneself. They might stand in cold water in winter, stand on or bury their heads in earth. Niyamas also breeds non-violence, truthfullness, non-stealing, moderation, non-possessiveness, purity, contentment, discipline, study and surrender.

  • Filled with suits, jackets, trousers, and overcoats, the choices of mens' office worker clothes fill a shop front window belonging to Mr Byrite, a high-street clothes store chain in London England UK. Bargain sale prices for the items of clothing are all over the window display, offering discounts for £30, £40 or £60 and the mannequins used to wear these clothes either have bald-headed representations of men, or faceless white models wearing sun glasses. There is a sale of cheap items attracting young city men, far from traditional work attire, and more fashionable for the day.

  • From the side of a road in south London, we see a group of naked female mannequins, standing and sitting with furniture on the forecourt of an office supplies business. A clearance sign stands partly-obscured but one's attention is to the physiques of each model that tends to signify whichever the fashion industry has decreed is the 'look' of the decade - whether buxom or skinny - and shop windows are therefore occupied with the clothing shapes of the day. Some women stand in that classic fashion pose, with arms at the side and one leg in front of the other, or sitting with one leg elegantly crossed: All designed to make the clothes they wear look attractive.

  • Young men re-enact the former border crossing between Communist East and West Germany during the Cold War at the site of the former Checkpoint Charlie, the border. The Berlin Wall was a barrier constructed by the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) starting on 13 August 1961, that completely cut off (by land) West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin. The Eastern Bloc claimed that the wall was erected to protect its population from fascist elements conspiring to prevent the "will of the people" in building a socialist state in East Germany. In practice, the Wall served to prevent the massive emigration and defection that marked Germany and the communist Eastern Bloc during the post-World War II period.

  • On stage, a beautiful topless dancer with a gentleman admirer during a variety show at the famous Parisian cabaret company Paradis Latin, Paris France. In front of glittery stars, the two ladies of the night are dressed in satin stockings and suspenders, flirting with this male dressed in top hat and tails, holding the hand of one lady and the about to kiss the cheek of the other, all the time lit with stage spotlights and the silhouetted heads of the front row audience at the bottom of the picture. The two girls appear to be twins but are probably wearing blonde wigs to make them look like a male 'Gentlemen prefer blondes' fantasy. (From a story about travelling through 6 European countries by coach in 7 days).
