  • Making their way across a field, alongside a hedge, and away from a collection homes a mother and her two children walk from the direction of massive chimneys and cooling towers. The instillation in the distance is the Sellafield. Formerly known as Windscale, Sellafield (operated by Sellafield Ltd) is a nuclear processing and former electricity generating site, close to the village of Seascale on the coast of the Irish Sea in Cumbria, England. The site has been the subject of much controversy because of discharges of radioactive material into the sea, mainly accidental but some alleged to have been deliberate. 1983 was the year of the 'Beach Discharge Incident' in which high radioactive discharges containing ruthenium and rhodium 106, both beta-emitting isotopes, resulted in the closure of a beach. BNFL received a fine of £10,000 for this discharge.

  • A partner of a member of the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team who are leaving for their winter training ground at Akrotiri, Cyprus. Other team-member families have come along to see these famous red aircaft. Most of the team leave the UK for a six-week stint, refining their evolving air display routines and manoeuvres in the clear Mediteranean skies. Pilots and ground support crew will be away from loved-ones and their absence is one of the toughest aspects of RAF frontline personnel - and aerobatic squadrons.

  • A four-engined airliner takes-off into distant darkening skies during the bi-annual aerospace industry expo at the Farnborough in southern England. Lifting off from an unseen runway, the aircraft leaves the ground to climb away towards its unknown destination - its modern navigation aides pointing it to foreign lands and skies.

  • A businessman wearing a light summer suit and carrying a briefcase walks away in the opposite direction to Canary Wharf tower which is seen over his shoulder from across a tree-lined Brockwell Park in South London, approximately 7.5 miles away. The flattened-perspective is because of an extremely long telephoto lens making it seem closer than it is in reality. Canary Wharf is the product of the 1980s financial boom when during the office of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, huge building projects such as the Docklands consortium saw vast changes in London's landscape.

  • An elderly-looking couple sail away into the distance on the Norfolk Broads at Potter Heigham, Norfolk, England. With a large red sail hoisted on a slow breeze, the sailors progress at a sedate pace past reed beds in one of the National Nature Reserves (NNR) designated by Natural England as key places for wildlife and natural features in England. The Broads are a network of mostly navigable rivers and lakes in the English counties of Norfolk and Suffolk. The total area is 303 square kilometres (117 sq mi), most of which is in Norfolk, with over 200 kilometres (120 mi) of navigable waterways. There are seven rivers and 63 broads, mostly less than 4 metres (13 ft) deep. Thirteen broads are generally open to navigation, with a further three having navigable channels.

  • Francis Rossi (left) and Rick Parfitt (right) of Status Quo face an auditorium, with their backs to the viewer while sitting on the edge of their stage after a sound check in l'Aeronef in Lille, France during their 2007 European Tour. Rossi adjusts his thin pony tail that he has sported since his early days in rock and roll. Parfitt and Rossi are the two original members of the band, having met as school boys in the early 60s. Their distinctive three-chord guitar riff has made them a household name with hits like: Rockin' All Over the World and Sweet Caroline; selling 118 million albums. Over their 40 years of performing, QUO have played over 6000 live shows to an audience of 25 million people and travelling four million miles and spent 23 years away from home..

  • Grabbing a quiet few moments in an otherwise busy environment, two people lie in long grass near the tall Canary Wharf tower structure a mile away in the background at Dockland's area of East London. On the grassy bank at Mudchute, a city farm on London's Isle of Dogs, England, the two people have been joined on this war summer afternoon by a small goat who is making its way along, munching at the lush vegetation. It is a seemingly rural location but is, in fact, an area of inner-city London, close to major construction projects, transforming Docklands into a major centre for finance and new housing.

  • A class of schoolboys accompanied by their teachers play on the shingle at the water's edge in the south coast seaside town of Brighton. The East Pier is resplendent with amusement rides and attractions that populate its long structure, jutting out into the calm English Channel beyond which is the French coast further south. The children are still in their school shirts, shorts and ties but have taken off their shoes and socks to frolic and enjoy some precious fresh-air and the freedom that childhood brings. According to British legal requirements, schoolchildren on away day visits must have accompanying adults with a ratio of 1:xx though it appears this group's quota is less with two teachers per 28 boys.

  • A rather obese woman stands in the waves at the seaside resort of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. With hands behind her back and fingers interlocked the lady wears a turquoise bathing costume that just about fits her ample, wide body. Her bottom is large as are her legs that have cellulite on the tops of her thighs. She looks left alone, a solitary person standing with her back to the viewer - or perhaps she is standing guard, keeping watch on children as they play safely in the sea. Water splashes against her lower legs and is frozen still by a fast shutter speed. It is a fine, bright sunny afternoon on this Eastern coast of England, more noted for very changeable weather rather than the heatwave experienced here.

  • The dome of St Paul's Cathedral is seen through a gap in mature ash tree branches, from the London borough of Lambeth to the City of London, approximately 5 miles distant. The large crossing dome is composed of three layers: the first triple dome ever to be constructed. St Paul's Cathedral, London, is a Church of England cathedral and seat of the Bishop of London. Its dedication to Paul the Apostle dates back to the original church on this site, founded in AD 604. St Paul's sits at the top of Ludgate Hill, the highest point in the City of London, and is the mother church of the Diocese of London. The present church dating from the late 17th century was built to an English Baroque design of Sir Christopher Wren, as part of a major rebuilding program which took place in the city after the Great Fire of London, and was completed within his lifetime.

  • A newly-recruited Nepali boy stares through the window of a Nepal Airlines airliner during his flight from his Himalayan homeland to the UK where his 2-year training for the British Army will begin, on 16th January 1997, in Kathmandu, Nepal. He is leaving behind his family for England where the British army is to make him a fully-trained soldier in the Gurkha Regiment. Some 60,000 young Nepalese boys aged between 17 - 22 (or 25 for those educated enough to become clerks or communications specialists) report to designated recruiting stations in the hills each November, most living from altitudes ranging from 4,000 - 12,000 feet. After initial selection, 7,000 are accepted for further tests from which 700 are sent down here to Pokhara in the shadow of the Himalayas. Only 160 of the best boys succeed in the flight to the UK. The Gurkhas training wing in Nepal has been supplying youth for the British army since the Indian Mutiny of 1857. (Photo by Richard Baker / In Pictures via Getty Images)

The event is presented by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), a national/international organization based in Oshkosh. • A theatrical joke about bureaucracy between French and British comedians at an event to mark the opening of the Channel Tunnel produces this quirky scene where each country's officials are seated at a long table, dressed in British flags, to symbolise the controls on human traffic that will soon pass through the tunnel beneath the sea between England and France, the first physical link between these two land masses since the Ice Age. Wearing smart uniforms, French immigration police and Gendarmes sit among British customs and immigration officials who, rather comically wear yellow hard hats because Health and Safety laws make the wearing of protective headgear compulsory on construction sites. A frontier control point notice stands for the benefit of viewers who might otherwise be guessing what is going on.
