  • A No Sharp objects warning is plain to see as a British Airways check-in employee attaches a luggage tag to the suitcase of a Business Class passenger about to take a long-haul flight from London Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5. The bag is about to disappear down the conveyor belt to join up to 70,000 other items during this average day at T5. With a bar code to identify both the bag and its owner's destination as well as the three letter IATA code, the bag enters 11 miles of underground conveyor belts beneath the 400m (a quarter of a mile) length of Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport. T5 alone has the capacity to serve around 30 million passengers a year and was completed in 2008 at a cost of £4.3bn. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009). .

  • A female security officer has spotted an abandoned bag with the words 'Giraffe To Go' on the side, inside a lift of Heathrow airport's Terminal 5. The woman talks urgently but calmly using her walkie-talkie. She needs to report it to her controllers as a suspicious package but may turn out to be an innocent lunch bag left by a hurrying and absent-minded passenger, realising their flight is about to close, instead of a bomb left by a malicious terrorist. The lady bends down to give as accurate description as she can before airport police arrive to determine how serious the treat is and possibly order a costly evacuation. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

This is Lombard Street, originally a piece of land granted by King Edward I to goldsmiths from the part of northern Italy known as Lombardy (larger than the modern region of Lombardy). It is a narrow and usually dark sidestreet near the Bank of England in the heart of what is called the Square Mile - the inner-part and oldest quarter of London occupied first by the Romans 2,000 years ago. Nowadays the City of London is home to banks and financial institutions but also with a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000.

The posh lady in the front is in yellow and holds on to her straw hat on this windy summer day. Each wears their red Ascot badges allowing them entry to this exclusive royal event attended by the Royal Family and the hoi polloi of English society. • Looking down from a person's height, we see two Pitbull dogs standing quietly on a south London street pavement. The two animals seem docile but are attached to leads held by an unknown owner. AT the dogs' feet in a stencilled sign that Lambeth, the local council has left at many locations of its streets where dog owners neglect to collect their pets' mess. Their idea was to paint the words "Bag it. Bin it" to help educate this unhygienic practice. Britain's Dangerous Dogs Act bans the breeding and sale or exchange of four kinds of dog - pit bull terriers, Japanese Tosas, the Dogo Argentinos, and the Fila Brasileiros. Under the act, a dog classed as being "dangerously out of control in a public place" can be destroyed. The owner can be fined and imprisoned for up to six months. If a dog injures someone, the owner can be jailed for up to two years.

  • Corporal Chris Ward, one of the photographers belonging to the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, reads a novel while wrapped up in sleeping bag and hammock aboard a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft during a two-day journey from RAF Scampton to RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus. Corporal Ward has established for himself a comfortable nest in the rear section at the loading ramp. The interior is basic with sharp corners but the walls are padded. Ward wears a heavy camouflaged coat to counteract the cold and ear-plugs from the droning engines. The Red Arrows pilots fly their Hawk jet aircraft to air shows but on long journeys requiring the support of ground crew borrow RAF transporters that fly behind the main airborne squadron shipping 10 tons of spares and personal effects for their six-week winter training stay.. .

  • As a sleeping homeless man lies curled up in his sleeping bag on a central London pavement, two window cleaners have carefully placed their ladders at his feet to clean a Boots the chemist sign. Each wearing identical blue working overalls and each wiping the frontage with their left hands, the men are symbolic of the working man versus that of a homeless person without a job, prospects or perhaps a future. The wide gap between hopelessness and the pride of one's achievement is shown here on the sidewalk of modern-day Britain. London is home to some 50,000 homeless people whose place of rest can often be recesses and shop doorways where they seek sanctuary from the cold and street violence. On the opposite end of the wealth and social divides are those who seek work with a positive outlook on life.

  • Sitting among others in long grass a middle-class lady reads the high-circulation Daily Mail newspaper during a lunchtime break at the Chelsea Flower Show, in London England. The front page headline reads 'Icy Blast from the Kremlin' in an echo from the darkest days of the Cold War, when western media fuelled the insatiable appetite for propaganda. But this scene is from May 1989 before the fall of the Berlin Wall and when the eastern states of the Warsaw Pact were still ruled by their Communist masters. Visitors to this annual horticultural event either sit in the cool shade or like this woman who appears comfortable cross-legged in sandals and a summer dress, stays under the hot mid-day sun with her tabloid format paper spread and with her possessions kept in a shoulder bag.
