  • Blue refuse bags have been left at the foot of a matching blue brick wall. In this side street of a south London suburb, we see the garbage lying on the pavement (sidewalk) surrounded by autumnal maple leaves. The wall in the background has been roughly painted, the bricks starting to crack. But the picture is about the similar colours of the wall to the Southwark borough council bags that are provided free for residents wishing to dispose of green garden waste only. If you live in a house or flat at street level you will have a blue box and bag for your recycling. In most cases, if you have a green rubbish bin you will also be able to use a blue box and bag.

  • A shopper picks up purchases in yellow Selfridges bags in London's West End. The bags are one of the capital's most striking symbols of British retail and are seen across the city as splashes of vibrant colour on the otherwise drab pavements and streets. The economic recovers appears to have begun in earnest and retail therapy has attracted these Londoners to the West End, away from the larger, warmer shopping Malls on the outskirts of town. Selfridges was founded by Harry Gordon Selfridge. The flagship store in London's Oxford Street is the second largest shop in the UK (after Harrods) and was opened on 15 March 1909.

  • Individual trays for airline baggage in the Early Bags Store where 4,000 pieces are held. 50-70,000 pieces of British Airways baggage a day travel through 11 miles of conveyor belts which were installed in a 5-storey underground hall beneath the 400m (a quarter of a mile) length of Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport. Here we see items of luggage spending 4 hours in transit, held in a fully-automated parking lot for bags. Computers decide when to fish the item out and re-introduce it into the system and load it on to the appropriate aircraft. T5 alone has the capacity to serve around 30 million passengers a year and was completed in 2008 at a cost of £4.3bn. The system was designed by an integrated team from the airport operator BAA, BA and Vanderlande Industries of the Netherlands, and handles both intra-terminal and inter-terminal luggage. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

Surrounded by black bin-bags during the Merseyside dustmans' strike of 1991, two young "Scouse' girls lean against a brick wall in a rear alleyway between poor terraced housing in Liverpool, England. The industrial action against the local authority was a health problem for Liverpool over that summer when streets filled with rubbish. Vermin like rats ran around and public city parks filled with every kind of refuse and garbage. Few of these back-to-backs existed in the 1990s after being cleared to allow construction of high-rise tower-blocks and flats. (Photo by Richard Baker / In Pictures via Getty Images)

  • In the 24hrs that a further 38 died from Coronavirus, bringing the total to 41,736, a further easing of the UK’s Covid pandemic lockdown restrictions took place with many high street shops today being allowed to re-open after three months of forced closure. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, wanting to stimulate the economy, has urged people to "shop with confidence" and long queues formed outside the main brands. But unlike on public transport, face coverings are not compulsory so shop floors and shopping practices have had to be adapted to ensure customers’ social distances, amid fears of a second infection wave. • Displayed in the window of a traditional Chinese medicine shop in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, are the labels and plastic bags containing some of the 500 Chinese herbs that are in use today in Eastern herbal remedies, of which 250 or so are very commonly used in the treatment of ailments and diseases. Rather than being prescribed individually, single herbs are combined into formulas designed to adapt to specific needs of individual patients. Herbal formulas contain from 3 to 25 herbs or animal parts, some sourced from endangered species. As with diet therapy, each herb has one or more of the five flavours/functions and one of five "temperatures" ("Qi") (hot, warm, neutral, cool, cold). After the herbalist determines the energetic temperature and functional state of the patient's body, they prescribe a mixture of herbs tailored to balance disharmony.
