Wearing his bathing costume, a young adventurer clambers over rocks in the Gross Enz river in Germany's Black Forest. The lad of 10 crouches to better balance himself, carefully placing his bare feet on the slippery rock's surface as he emerges from the chilly mountain water. It is high summer and we can see the boy backlit by the glare of strong sunlight in the background. The Gross Enz river rises in Enzklosterle in Baden-Württemberg and is an eventual tributary of the Neckar. Geologically, the Black Forest consists of a cover of sandstone on top of a core of gneiss. During the last glacial period, the Würm glaciation, the Black Forest was covered by glaciers.

  • Wearing a peaked cap and small rucksack, a young adventurer, scales a giant boulder in the ancient forest of Monbachtal Bach in Germany's Black Forest. Stretching to climb the rock, the lad of 10 uses his hand and walking stick to balance as he puts a boot higher to gain a sure footing. There is ample covering of moss and lichen on the primeval landscape making it hazardous to conquer but the boy has the stamina to get to the top and continue his walk through this beautiful wilderness. The boy is alone in the picture though accompanied by his family but he seems to mange on his own, capable of finding his own limits of endurance and confidence. • As a boy swings from a tree, canoeists enjoy a day's paddling down the River Lesse, Belgium's prime kayaking destination in the southern Ardennes region. At Anseremme, south of the town of Dinant, the adventurers negotiate their way down 21 km of gentle fresh water through the beautiful Belgian gorges and forests. Before plunging down a weir (Barrage in French) near a camp site they are pelted by splashing water from campers in the water. The red canoes have been hired for the day from 'Kayaks Ansiaux' and another rival company who rent blue boats. Families and young people make the slow journey along the Lesse, Paddles match the colours of the canoes and they all glint off a strong afternoon sun during the high-season holiday month. Most commonly routes start in Han and go all the way down to Dinant, where the Lesse meets the Meuse.

  • Half-way across the thin taut wire of a tightrope, an tightwire walker acrobat riding a monocycle pauses and wobbles to compensate his balance before continuing his journey across to safety at the other end of two supporting poles The act forms part of the Canadian circus troupe Cirque de Soleil during a show in Battersea, London. Blue and red spotlights illuminate this daredevil and we see his tights, his wide-sleeved theatrical shirt and the concentration and grim determination on his face - the look of a professional trickster at work. He may be showing a seemingly dangerous and unpredictable stunt though in truth, he will have rehearsed this simple balancing act for many years but must still keep up the illusion of danger for the sake of a gasping, gullible audience.

  • "Crooked Lady." A twelve month-old girl who has recently learned to walk proudly strides past an elderly lady with balancing arms outstretched while at the Dulwich Show in South London. There is a marked difference between the youthful, upright posture of the young girl to the hunched and bent stance of the old woman who stands supporting herself on a brolley. It is a picture that compares youth with old age, the delight that a person of later years shows to a child whose life reaches far ahead. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • A local man carries tourism industry supplies downhill on the Annapurna Sanctuary trekking route in central Nepal. With the heavy load on his back, supported in the traditional Himalayan manner of a head strap that steadies the pack, the man makes his steady way down the foothill using a long pole for extra balance. Communities here partly-depend on the agriculture of rice-growing but also on the passing tourist trade. Western trekkers from all over the world walk through these tiny communities on their way up the series of climbing trails of the Annapurna Conservation Sanctuary circuit, a sometimes rigorous walk from the low hills of Pokhara to the higher altitudes of Annapurna, the (26,000 feet (8,000 metre) peak. He has found inner-peace, a tranquillity surrounded by the chaotic pace of Indian life in this city. The engineering of the bridge stretches across the water as the humanity cross to their businesses and markets. The bridge is one of three on the Hooghly River and is a famous symbol of Kolkata and West Bengal. Bearing the daily weight of approximately 150,000 vehicles and 4,000,000 pedestrians. It is one of the longest bridges of its type in the world. The Hooghly River is an approximately 260 km long distributary of the Ganges River.

  • Lying on her back with eyes closed, a young girl stretches her arms out allowing her father to support her weight in an empty swimming pool in Miami Florida. With complete trust, she lets herself go and yields to her own natural buoyancy as she floats amid this seemingly wide ocean of chlorinated water belonging to a hotel on Ocean Drive. We see her bright red costume clearly against the complimentary prime colour green in a vibrant display from the spectrum. It is a scene of love and confidence, of youth and health.

  • Reaching out to a tower of scaffolding, high above the skyline of North London, a member of a company of abseiling construction scaffold workers make use of circus skills. Suspended with ropes, carabinas and a seat harness normally used by mountaineers, this man is wearing a safety helmet and blue overalls and his dirty gloved hand is about to make contact with yellow iron work as his colleague looks skyward, already tethered to the reinforced structure. A 60s tower block is immediately behind and suburban houses and streets are below. We see a man about to make contact with a place of safety, reaching out to his destination while spread across London's skies. Lit by flash, this picture is confusing because the viewer sees a false sense of size and scale between the iron work and the flats behind.
