  • Old apartment and iron balcony architecture in Lisbon's old Arabic Alfama district. Murals of classical Portuguese figures adorn the plaster walls next to crumbling windows and balconies which have the look of vintage from a former era in Lisbon's capital. Alfama is the oldest district of Lisbon, spreading on the slope between the Castle of Lisbon and the Tejo river. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-hamma, meaning fountains or baths. It contains many important historical attractions, with many Fado bars and restaurants.

  • In a compressed perspective are the Doric pillars of London's famous Eaton Square. Bathed in mid-morning spring sunshine, shadows from nearby trees are cast over the cream-coloured pillars, some of which have the numbers of these exclusive and classically-designed properties in Belgravia. Shrubs and plants can be seen growing on the terraced balconies and all the painted surfaces are pristine. Eaton Square is one of London's three garden squares built by Thomas Cubitt and the Grosvenor family when they developed the main part of Belgravia from 1826 until 1855. Belgravia attracts actors, politicians, ambassadors, big-budget bankers, traders and Prime Ministers like Neville Chamberlain and Stanley Baldwin at number 93.

  • With a giant Volkswagen (VW) poster of their Lupo car in the foreground, we are viewing an aerial view of Via dei Condotti, the pedestrian street that runs west from the Spanish steps in the Italian capital, Rome. Written in the Italian language, the banner says the word Astemia which in English translates teetotaller, implying the vehicle is clean and non-polluting - in other words, zero emissions. This high viewpoint is taken from the top of the famous landmark where the height and perspective allows us to see down the street where shoppers to and fro amid the occasional vehicle crosses or is parked to make deliveries. On the corner of the poster building are balconies, terraces and the shuttered windows of apartments.

It was open in at least 1914, making it what is believed to be the oldest purpose-built cinema in Europe. In its early days it featured a 21-piece orchestra, with each member paid a guinea to perform. There are 375 seats: 271 in the stalls, 104 in the circle, plus three private boxes at the back seating an additional eight. Seat 2, Row 2 of the circle was the favourite seat of crime novelist Agatha Christie, who lived at Greenway House, near neighbouring Kingswear. The cinemas and theatres in her books are all reportedly based on the Torbay Picture House.
