  • A holy Sadhu man attracts a crowd on the Maidan in central Calcutta, India. Near some ballustrades built by the British during the last years of the Raj, the man is leaning forward on his knees and his head is buried in gravel. Practicing Tapas or Niyamas, is one form of Austerity that holy men like this perform to cleanse themselves of bad thoughts. It is a conservation of energy; an increase of power in the system by sense control; a process of positive-thought, self-imposed hardships and inner-strength - all to gain a higher being for oneself. They might stand in cold water in winter, stand on or bury their heads in earth. Niyamas also breeds non-violence, truthfullness, non-stealing, moderation, non-possessiveness, purity, contentment, discipline, study and surrender.

  • A young, vulnerable-looking youth stands close to two members of a local Evangelical church who are using a carpet warehouse as a temporary Ministry. Rolls of carpets and rugs are behind these Christians as the two officials practice the 'laying on of hands' to cleanse the soul of their young convert during a religious meeting in Newport, Wales. As the ceremony takes place when this boy is persuaded to accept Jesus into his life, two retail signs proclaim the prices and credit terms of the household items. The laying on of hands is a religious practice found throughout the world in varying forms. In Christian churches, this practice is used as both a symbolic and formal method of invoking the Holy Spirit during baptisms, healing services, blessings, and ordination of priests, ministers, elders, deacons, and other holy church ceremonies.

  • The graves of Irish Republican hunger strikers in Milltown Cemetery, Belfast. Their roll-call of names are on stones laid o the ground including that of Bobby Sands, the elected MP. The five-year protest during The Troubles began as the blanket protest in 1976, when the British government withdrew Special Category Status for convicted paramilitary prisoners. In 1978, after a number of attacks on prisoners leaving their cells to "slop out", the dispute escalated into the dirty protest, where prisoners refused to leave their cells to wash and covered the walls of their cells with excrement. The second hunger strike took place in 1981 and was a showdown between the prisoners and the Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. The strike was called off after ten prisoners had starved themselves to death?including Sands, whose funeral was attended by 100,000 people,
