  • A Parachute Regiment recruit is in mid-flight and leaps across a wide space between scaffolding and a rope net during the 14-week long Pegasus (P) Company selection programme. Seen in silhouette, the man is in full stretch, half-way between the gantry he leapt from and the rope net that he is about to meet. It is an image that describes a mid-point, a half-way position between safety and uncertainty. Known as the Trainasium, it is an 'Aerial Confidence Course' which is unique to P Company. In order to assess his suitability for military parachuting, the Trainasium tests a candiates ability to overcome fear and carry out simple activities and instructions at a height above ground level. Recruits wanting to join the British Army's Parachute Regiment held regularly at Catterick army barracks, Yorkshire, need to pass this and other tests before earning the right to wear the esteemed maroon beret.

  • British Army Parachute Regiment soldiers prepare for another bout of Milling, a test of aggression for new recruits. In this event, each candidate is paired with another of similar weight and build, and is given 60 seconds to demonstrate 'controlled physical aggression' in a milling contest - similar to boxing, except neither winning, losing, nor skill are pre-requisites of passing. Candidates are instead scored on their determination, while blocking and dodging result in points deducted. Candidates now wear head protection as well as boxing gloves.

  • Two businessmen - one younger than the other, who may be his superior - pace through the Broadgate Estate during a break in the working day in the City of London, the capital's financial centre - otherwise called the Square Mile. Seen as they walk fast under a covered alleyway, the warm sun strikes their faces while they are deep in conversation - perhaps discussing a strategy while fetching a local coffee. Deep shadow allows us to focus in on their dark suits, their pink skin and the similarly orange colour of the strong vertical columns that form this urban architecture completed in the Bishopsgate development of the mid-1980s. Broadgate is a large, 32 acres (129,499 m2) office and retail estate in the City of London, owned by British Land and managed by Broadgate Estates.

A tour rep encourages the men to push their inibitions to the limit but with a reputation for 'Sun, Sand and Sex' the 18-30 holiday formula has been labelled as parents' worth nightmare. From from the company's web site however the fantasy sounds less riotous: "There comes a time in life when you need to do it for yourself. A time to break free and break the mould. To explore, leave the map at home and find yourself. To find that one moment and make it last a lifetime. That time is now. Sunrise to sunset. Sunset to sunrise. This is the time of your life. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

Coloured umbrellas look all the brighter in the subdued light and wet conditions. The people come and go in their 90s fashion. The art is called Fulcrum (1987) by Richard Serra, a sculpture commissioned for the west entrance to Liverpool Street station in the Broadgate complex.

  • Amid the hectic arrivals concourse of Heathrow airport's Terminal 5, a young couple hold on to each other tight after a few weeks separation when the girl took a family holiday away from her boyfriend who needed to work here in London. They have clearly missed each other after such a short break from each other but are otherwise oblivious to the crowds that surround them in this busy international airport. They embrace with genuine affection for each other in a display of sexual freedom that is otherwise seen as a taboo in other countries. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

  • As two city office workers walk briskly towards the viewer, we also see an artwork, a series of statues of commuting people are also striding as one, making their homeward journeys. The two gentlemen however appear to be taking a lunchtime break from their desk jobs and carrying sports holdalls with the 90s sports brand Head, are probably on their way to any number of city-based gyms. They look successful and wealthy, products of a healthy economy and a business culture of bonuses and high prospects of affluence whereas the statues lend a feeing of suppression and the treadmill of their anonymous daily lives as if they were part of some Orwellian society. .

  • Seen from slightly behind, a young woman stands taking shelter from early evening rain in Goodge Street, London England. Holding a lit cigarette in her left hand and with an unused ashtray to her right, she is chatting with friends who are also enjoying a relaxing hour after work. Under the UK Government's recent laws on smoking in public places, the work mates are forced outside the pub to smoke on the street in a special area away from the anti-smoking people indoors. Lit by glowing red lights that also provide warmth on this chilly January night, the friends are comfortable in their own company.
