  • Four water-logged deckchairs have been abandoned on a wet Brighton's East Pier in East Sussex. It is Spring but the rain has driven away holidaymakers from this desolate and depressing spot from England's South coast seaside resort. We see a gloomy, grey sky and empty horizon with neither people, nor water activity but the stripes of the railings are echoed in the reflective wooden planks on this Victorian-era pier and of the fabric on the deckchairs. We wonder who might have sat on these chairs and where they might be now? This landscape might be the antithesis of a holiday poster that repels rather than attracts tourists to this location.

  • A class of schoolboys accompanied by their teachers play on the shingle at the water's edge in the south coast seaside town of Brighton. The East Pier is resplendent with amusement rides and attractions that populate its long structure, jutting out into the calm English Channel beyond which is the French coast further south. The children are still in their school shirts, shorts and ties but have taken off their shoes and socks to frolic and enjoy some precious fresh-air and the freedom that childhood brings. According to British legal requirements, schoolchildren on away day visits must have accompanying adults with a ratio of 1:xx though it appears this group's quota is less with two teachers per 28 boys.

  • Seen from a low angle inside their open-top classic American car, two openly gay men cuddle up close to look into each other's eyes while holding their favourite cans of Websters Yorkshire bitter (beer). They are attending a classic car rally in Brighton during a Gay Pride festival, that this English seaside town regularly hosts during the hot south coast summers. The large 60s steering wheel is seen in the foreground and the vehicle's leather seat looks shiny clean against the bright light. There is a classic car magazine resting on one man's knee and they are clearly mad about this era of motor transportation.

  • In the shelter of a large red and yellow-striped marquee tent, a middle-aged husband and wife relax in deck chairs on Brighton's East Pier, England. The wife appears to be asleep and has taken the prrecution against splinters from the pier's planks by spreading a tiny towell to rest her feet upon. She has dyed hair and large sun glasses and her bony legs are tanned and veined from much exposure to the sun. The husband is also fully-clothed with a loud checked jacket, black shoes and socks and he sits crossed-legged with a peaked cap and dark glasses with his hands across his belly. They are in a peaceful spot on this pier, a Victorian seaside structure built in 1899 for those taking the air to walk out onto the sea without getting their feet wet.

  • Schoolboys get dressed after an afternoon off from classes, spent next to the western Palace Pier at the seaside town of Brighton. Pulling on socks is a young lad from a nearby school whose uniform is a red blazer and striped tie. With their clothing of their friends still lie on the shngle, their afternoon of play day is coming to an end. In the background is the western Palace Pier, a major landmark on this south coast resort. Ofsted's guidelines are that for children of 9-12, a ratio of one adult to 8 young people is a requirement.

  • A couple of mixed-race have put their heads through the apertures made in a painting that depicts Prince Albert and Queen Victoria, on the Palace Pier at Brighton, on the south coast of England. The faces peep through this traditional attraction that few can resist, even in the 21st century. The man's face looks disturbingly incongruous in the place where the Prince Consort's white German character would be. There is a message here of a changing multi-cultural British society where these friends or partners are from other ethnic backgrounds and where mixed-marriages are now commonplace, as opposed to the Victorian era when attitudes to racism and race-relations were vastly different.

  • British Prime Minster John Major addresses his Conservative Party conference in Brighton. Behind him is large image of a Union Jack flag that seemingly flutters patriotically in the background, as if giving him the appearance of a man of the people. Major was PM from 1990-97 after Margaret Thatcher loss of popularity and subsequent removal from office. • Three bathers lie on the shingle in the lee of a groyne, a wooden screen from the fresh breeze that has been written on by unknown people having scrawled their names and a noughts and crosses puzzle written in chalk. One person wears his socks in true English style and the lady in the middle has her bag containing possessions near her head. Above them sits a lifeguard on a pair of high steps, peering along the beach with a pair of binoculars. Meanwhile, a lone seagull wheels around the coastal thermals and is caught between the wooden slats of the groyne.

  • In front of amused elderly passers-by, street performers strut their stuff during a Gay Pride parade of homosexuals and transgender cross-dressers. One wears a bright red and gold costume with feathers just off the road while another wears a dancer's sequined leotard. Gay pride or LGBT pride is the positive stance against discrimination and violence toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people to promote their self-affirmation, dignity, equality rights, increase their visibility as a social group, build community, and celebrate sexual diversity and gender variance.

Two years after her colleagues deposed her, forcing her to resign from her 11 year premiership she is still in favour by Conservatives who are proud to display her in public, before eventually shunning her policies and profile for their campaigns. Surrounded by supporters, the media, an aide on the left and in the red, her personal protection police officer. Thatcher has been lending her support to the election campaign of her replacement, John Major who went on to win and govern until his defeat in 1997 to Labour's Tony Blair.

  • The British Union Jack Flag flies in a stiff breeze, its colours of red-white and blue almost wholly horizontal as the wind tears through the blue skies and beneath wispy cirrus clouds, in Eastbourne, West Sussex, England UK. Tied to its flag-pole, this symbol of patriotic nationalism, evokes a sense of pride and spirit the British are known for - having encouraged them through two world wars and more recently, other military campaigns. The colours (colors) of Scotland's blue and white crosses and the English cross of St. George are merged to make this well-known symbol of the British Isles.
