  • A wide dusk landscape of the development in the City of London, known as Broadgate is a vast estate of corporate buildings developed in the Thatcher years, sitting astride the redeveloped Liverpool Street mainline station. Broadgate is a large, 32-acre (13 ha) office and retail estate in the City of London, owned by British Land and the Blackstone Group and managed by Broadgate Estates. The original developer was Rosehaugh: it was built by a Bovis / Tarmac Construction joint venture and was the largest office development in London until the arrival of Canary Wharf in the early 1990s. The modern and mainly-pedestrianised development is located on the original site of Broad Street station (closed in 1986) and beside and above the railway approaches into Liverpool Street station.

The first modern chess tournament was organized by Howard Staunton, a leading English chess player, and was held in London in 1851. It was won by the relatively unknown German Adolf Anderssen, who was hailed as the leading chess master, and his brilliant, energetic attacking style became typical for the time, although it was later regarded as strategically shallow. • Two businessmen - one younger than the other, who may be his superior - pace through the Broadgate Estate during a break in the working day in the City of London, the capital's financial centre - otherwise called the Square Mile. Seen as they walk fast under a covered alleyway, the warm sun strikes their faces while they are deep in conversation - perhaps discussing a strategy while fetching a local coffee. Deep shadow allows us to focus in on their dark suits, their pink skin and the similarly orange colour of the strong vertical columns that form this urban architecture completed in the Bishopsgate development of the mid-1980s. • Londoners from a break from their office jobs, take a walk in the rain at Broadgate in the City of London, the capital's heart of its financial district. The reflection of an 80s steel art instillation and the surrounding corporate development is seen on the ground as we look down from a high vantage point. Coloured umbrellas look all the brighter in the subdued light and wet conditions. The people come and go in their 90s fashion. The art is called Fulcrum (1987) by Richard Serra, a sculpture commissioned for the west entrance to Liverpool Street station in the Broadgate complex.

  • Striding across the picture in different directions, two office workers: A lady in a red coat whose head and identity is lost in shadow, and a man wearing a dark suit whose stride is purposeful and confident. A third person, another man, leans against a wall looking thoughtfully into the distance. There is more shadow than highlight in this scene taken at Broadgate, a private estate of financial institutions and global businesses in the heart of the City of London. There are no spring leaves on the trees whose shadows are falling on an opposite wall. The headless lady looks sinister minus her face and there is tension in this image of linear and diagonal space. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

  • Pigeon pest controller, Sue Van Vynck releases Harriet, her Harris Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus) to scare away the local pigeon population. The ancient sport of Falconry has become today's humane pest control of choice, particularly as costs falls. Once a pigeon population has been scared away, it requires only a token hawk presence to keep it away. Van Vynck Bird Control is a specialist company providing over 25 years, a range of environmental services dealing with nuisance bird management. They are pioneers of specialist techniques such as the use of predatory species (such as falconry) to displace and interrupt behavioural patterns as well as offering a complete range of physical deterrents. Here at Broadgate the nuisance was pigeons and Harriet leaves Sue's gloved hand to patrol the architecture of this 32 acres (129,499 m2) office and retail space.

The two gentlemen however appear to be taking a lunchtime break from their desk jobs and carrying sports holdalls with the 90s sports brand Head, are probably on their way to any number of city-based gyms. They look successful and wealthy, products of a healthy economy and a business culture of bonuses and high prospects of affluence whereas the statues lend a feeing of suppression and the treadmill of their anonymous daily lives as if they were part of some Orwellian society. .

  • Four associates celebrate a successful day's business by treating themselves to a lunchtime bottle of white wine amid the scenes of prosperity and wealth of early 90s Britain. At their feet in the bay window are the fruits of a buoyant economy - Magnums of and jeroboams of Champagne to help revel in the success of the era. This is the City of London, the heart of the capital's financial district where money is earned in great quantities and commodities traded in their millions. There is a heat wave in the capital and others are soaking up rays during a working week. Bronzed and asleep, the young man is carefree enough not to worry about his eccentric behaviour in a public place.
