  • A portrait of three brothers of the same family have their picture taken outside their parents' home in Westcliff, England. The eldest is a teenager of approximately 17 and is holding his youngest brother who is still only 12 months-old. The third boy is biting his lip while looking to the viewer, more anxiously than the other two. He is possibly 14 but both the elder lads wear identically-designed jumpers that cut across the throat to allow their clean white shirts and ties to remain visible. Apart from the young child, the elders share the same dark hair colour but genetically, they share one chromosome that has given them heavy eyebrows, a family trait. This was taken on Kodachrome film stock in the spring of 1961 so the look and feel of the image is dated with wonderfully muted colours that this Kodak film offered to consumers in the early 60s.

  • A Nepali family consisting of parents and young children outside their home in the central region of the Himalayan mountain kingdom. Children and adults are near a dry stone wall in a foothill dwelling near the town of Gorkha where the British army traditionally find young men for the Gurkha regiment (as thay have done since 1857). The family are wearing clean clothes with bright colours and appear healthy despite this country - and especially for those living at altitude - being one of the world's poorest. The prospects for these children may mean they will in future try to seek work in the cities like Kathmandu rather than face a lifetime's struggle in local agriculture. Their supplies and contact with the outside world comes up from tracks of boulders and stone along which either men or yaks carry up food for basic survival and luxury goods.

Both dogs are albino-coloured with floppy ears and pink eyes while the two healthy men are dark-skinned and in good-humour, one wearing a singlet vest and prominent silver necklace and the other topless so warm is this summer day.

  • Two children lay down on the ground at the foot of a solid dry stone wall, up in the hills of the area of northern England known as the Dales, near Settle, Yorkshire. The two brother and sister have their faces against the rocks that serve as boundaries and enclosures for farmers and land owners. These walls were built by tradesmen called Wallers, a dying tradition and skill. Dry stone walls are constructed from stones without any mortar to bind them together. The wall is held up by special construction methods and by its weight. The stones must be carefully selected by shape to ensure that they have a large contact surface area with their neighbours and so do not slip. • On a wooden boardwalk that stretches across a sandy beach landscape, a young girl runs at full speed away from her mother and younger brother who walk along this walkway on the beach at Calais, France. Half-way back to the shore is a lone lifebelt attached to its pole in case of emergency. This near-deserted beach is an idyllic and tranquil place, allowing children to let off steam. • A lone male figure makes his way along a corridor of power in the newly-opened European Parliament building in Brussels, Belgium. As the new head-quarters of the EU and an administrative home to the Members of European Parliament (MEPs), it is a contemporary architectural symbol of infuence and modernity. We see the man walking towards an open atrium. The viewer can see three floors though there are many more out of sight and on two of the levels there are TV screens with the stars denoting the number of member states at that time. The interior is grid-like with warm and inviting lighting, making for a productive environment in which office workers can feel comfortable when dealing with European political business.

  • Reaching high above his head, a young four year-old boy waves a hoop drenched in a soapy solution that creates large bubbles trailing in the air at a camp site in Heerde, Gelderland, in the Netherlands. We look up at the lad between tall trees during his summer holidays as he arcs the rod loaded with a thin film of soap water, creating a thin film of iridescence on its surface. But moments after it forms, it bursts. From a personal documentary project entitled "Next of Kin" about the photographer's two children's early years spent in parallel universes. Model released.

  • Two young children experience a little independence during a walk by themselves through a wood near their grandparents' cottage in Somerset, England. Discovering for themselves the delights of childish adventure without the worries of security unfortunately prevalent in the inner-cities. Here in the forest they return home with the sun in their eyes having had the time of their lives. The beech trees' branches are full with leaves on this mid-summer afternoon in this tranquil scene of childhood innocence, of long summer days and summer holidays. From a personal documentary project entitled "Next of Kin" about the photographer's two children's early years spent in parallel universes. Model released.

  • A young three year-old boy has his hair cut by his mother in the family South London home. Lifting his hair with her fingers, the mum snips with a pair of scissors. While lifting her left elbow to gain the right angle of her cutting, we see her holding a comb in her mouth. The boy's elder sister looks on offering unhelpful comments which will eventually lead to an exchange of unkind words between the siblings while their mother concentrates hard on not making a mess of the kid's haircut. • A newborn baby boy is carried away from his mother immediately after she has given birth to the child in the delivery ward at Kings College Hospital, Camberwell, London. Handling the crying and twisting infant with only one hand, the lady health professional takes it to a warm towel and then to some weighing scales where the baby is checked and cleaned then returned to the mum who is still on the birthing bed. From a personal documentary project entitled "Next of Kin" about the photographer's two children's early years spent in parallel universes.

  • Two children ride a merry-go-round on the sea front at Southport, Merseyside, northern England. Hanging on to the carousel's horse, the youngest child is a boy who grips the pole as he whizzes through along while an older girl who is possibly his sister, leans forward as she enjoys the circular speed. The background blurs but we see the bright lights above the pier's amusement arcade entrance (the second longest pier in the UK) but it is a chilly winter, an off-season day with few people about on this chilly day nearing Christmas.

  • A scene of busy modern air travel as international passengers check-in at the British Airways Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5. Under the gaze of a giant eye that seems to be peering from out of a massive TV screen, the self-service kiosks that have been developed to allow customers to process their own ticketing on arrival at this aviation hub for British Airways. Once they've chosen their seat and printed a boarding pass, they can go straight to the Fast Bag Drop desk at the airport. There, baggage will be tagged by an agent and sent to the aircraft. At a cost of £4.3 billion, Terminal 5 has the capacity to serve around 30 million passengers a year. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009). ...
