  • Near the chaotic road junction of Piazza Venezia in the Italian capital of Rome, we see a gridlock situation of traffic. Buses, cars and three scooters and riders appear to be stuck in the middle of a motoring nightmare as no-one goes anywhere - the progress of this journey to destinations and life itself, has ground to a halt. A bus passenger looks out resigned through her window, a driver on another vehicle rests his hand on a ledge and the riders are sandwiched between cars. The dot matrix sign on the 60 bus it mentions its own destination, the abbreviation for Piazza spelled as "P.za". The Piazza Venezia takes its name from the adjacent Palazzo Venezia, the former embassy in the city of the Republic of Venice. The piazza is at the foot of the Capitoline Hill and near the Roman Forum.

  • During a time-exposure of a few seconds, the ambient neon and natural evening light of Miami Beach's Ocean Drive are mixed together to give an atmospheric mood of vitality, bustle and excitement in this tropical city. The vertical-aligned name of the famous Colony Hotel is seen through the darkened window of an SUV (4x4). Glowing pinks and blues are vivid in this scene where beautiful people and expensive cars cruise along slowly, each parading bodywork and personality. Palm trees sway about in the coastal breeze, blurring during the exposure and making them ghostly against the fading sky of early evening. This is vibrant district of Miami, Florida. The DDR-produced Trabant suffered poor performance, but its smoky two-stroke engine regarded with affection as a symbol of the more positive sides of East Germany. Many East Germans streamed into West Berlin and West Germany in their Trabants after the opening of the Berlin Wall. It was in production without any significant change for nearly 30 years. The name Trabant means "fellow traveler" in German.

  • Six months after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the last Trabant cars await buyers outside the factory production line, on 1st June 1990, in Zwickau, eastern Germany (former DDR).

  • Traffic, cyclists and pedestrians fill this busy urban landscape in Oxford Street in London's west end. As the cars drive past allowing for the space needed for the bikes and their riders, shoppers walking on the pavement (sidewalk) make their way to see the shops and stores. We see the signage of McDonalds, Virgin and Sock Shop - all major brands in the early 1990s - plus Cannon cinemas. There is boxes litter in the gutter which the cyclists have to steer past and they pass-by.

  • Seen from an office block high vantage point, thousands of commuters pour northwards over London Bridge against the direction of queueing buses and cars. It is a scene about the transient business community and mass transport. The working population arrives early for work over the bridge in the City of London's historic financial district. We see the sunlit faces of those walking towards the viewer which echo the red tail lights of the stationary vehicles. So gridlocked is the traffic on the southbound carriageway, there is a lone cyclist stuck and squeezed between the curb and a double-decker bus. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. ...

  • Making their way across a snow-swept road in Norwood, south London, an elderly couple tread warily as the snow turns to slush. It's a bleak, raw morning as the new snowfall has settled on this suburban street where cars are parked on icy kerbs. Wearing sensible hats and coats and non-slip boots the pensioners are vulnerable to icy black spots which may endanger their stability because old people are susceptible to falls and injury at these hazardous times. A very monochrome landscape, we see little colour. Instead it is a scene of jeopardy and of an uncaring society for its older generations.
