  • Detail of taxi-way centre-line lighting at RAF Scampton, home of the 'Red Arrows', Britain's Royal Air Force aerobatic team

  • The Hawk jet aircraft of the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, are lined up at RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus as members of the team's ground crew step away from the aircraft that they respectively look after. From a low angle we see a wide landscape looking over the taxi-way markings that direct military airplanes. The Red Arrows aircraft are a deep red colour that stand out against the horizon in an identical line. It is a wide expanse of road surface, the yellow centre-lines are for the benefit of pilots who need guidance for parking areas after landing, or leaving towards the departing runway on the southern part of the Cypriot Mediterranean island. With the Red Arrows, the nine taxiing jets all peel off in unison to and from the parking area and these lines are vital for this technique.

  • Airside Operations Safety Unit (AOSU) runway centreline night drive inspection at Heathrow Airport
    heathrow_airport1103-11-08-2009.jpg
  • A wide night view looking down on the rubber-stained of runway 27R at Heathrow Airport. During a time-exposure and partially-lit by the headlights and spotlights of an airfield emergency vehicle, we see the giant numbers 27 that landing pilots will see from a mile away as they descend towards the airport's threshold. The numbers relate to the compass bearing that the line of the runway takes: In this case 270 degrees from north and has a parallel southern twin. Across the number two we also see a set of taxiway lights that help the steering pilot navigate across the airfield and line-up on the departing runway. .From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009). .

  • Police tape and a makeshift sign warn of a lane closure due to flooding in the village of Lavant, West Sussex. Afternoon sunshine illuminates the roughly-made board with red painted letters which says 'Road Closed'. The rippling water is less than a foot deep and we can see the broken white centre line beneath the surface but the linked posts that border the village green are also submerged. Even so, traffic is prohibited from passing through there for the risk of grounding or damaging engines. Lavant is a village just north of the city of Chichester. It is made up of two parts, Mid Lavant and East Lavant, and takes its name from the River Lavant which flows from East Dean. This area has been prone to flooding for several years and houses around the rising rivers can be blighted with insurance companies refusing future cover.

  • Parking places for participating military aircraft have been mapped out with aerosol spray at the Royal International Air tattoo (RIAT) at RAF Fairford, Gloucestershirewhere a single nosewheel belonging to a Hawk jet of the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's Royal Air Force aerobatic team, is pressed onto chocks, on a yellow taxi-way centre-line stripe. Since 1965 the Red Arrows have flown over 4,000 such shows in 52 countries.
