  • Seen from a position on Southwark Bridge, we look westwards to see an office worker communicating on the telephone while referring to some paperwork. His computer monitor is on the desk next to him and beyond on the south bank, the evening sky is going purple and another office tower block's lights are on and the water of the River Thames is coloured blue. We see the office as a box, a work place where people are often separated from others by walls and partitions, creating an isolating work environment.

Britain's Department of Transport has awarded to an unproven shipping company, Seaborne Freight, to provide run roll-on roll-off ferry services to the road haulage industry between Ostend and the Kent port - in the event of more likely No Deal Brexit. In the EU referendum of 2016, people in Kent voted strongly in favour of leaving the European Union with 59% voting to leave and 41% to remain.

  • A lady protects herself from a mid-day summer summer sun with a brightly coloured parasol brolley. Oblivious to the viewer, she balances her lunch snack on her lap with toes pointing inwards, exposed to the hot solar rays. Meanwhile, she holds on tight to her eager pet poodle dog who is straining on its leash, wanting to go for a walk along the largely unpopulated promenade in this Devon resort, otherwise known as the English Riviera. But splashes of white paint (from the painted beach huts) have been left on the pavement. It is a horrible place to sit in the sun and her partner has left her alone to sit on her sun lounger, leaving the second chair vacant.

The reflection of an 80s steel art instillation and the surrounding corporate development is seen on the ground as we look down from a high vantage point. Coloured umbrellas look all the brighter in the subdued light and wet conditions. The people come and go in their 90s fashion. The young lad looks smart in a new school uniform of cap, blazer, long trousers and polished black shoes. We might guess that it is the start of a new academic year and that he is about to attend a new school for which he needs to take a train on his own. His mother and younger and older sister are also to the far right of the picture so he may go with his elder sibling carrying a multi-coloured umbrella and a bright blue briefcase containing his lunch and a few items needed for lessons. Surrounded by adult commuters, some of who look on with mild amusement, also make await their train from the city out of town. • In late afternoon winter sun, a lady emerges from deep shadow wearing a fur hat on the Kings Road in Chelsea, London, England. Foreign magazines line a rack of an outdoor newsagent and we only see the lady's head in the sunlight. There is a low colour temperature orange glow to the picture and only the lady's face wrapped in a fur hat and the magazine covers can be seen in detail. There are few highlights apart from the magazines in the sun, and more shadow area making this a dark image. The Kings Road has been famous in London since the 60s when fashion and flower power was the label most associated with being young and hip in the Swinging Sixties. It is more sober these days but families and young people tend to be wealthier, white and middle-class than other areas such as Carnaby Street which is seen as seedy and cheap.

  • A young lad of 10 poses for a portrait taken by his brother while holding the hand of his young nephew. Confusingly, the 10 year-old uncle and the 1 year-old child are closer in age than the two brothers. The older boy is on holiday in Malawi visiting expat family in the then capital, Blantyre, so named after the town in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, where the explorer David Livingstone was born. Both boys stand in the dust of a back yard where a broken windmill remains upright in the intense brightness of mid-day. It is a scene of awkward and gangly boyhood versus the confidence and innocence of young childhood and their posture is exaggerated by differing heights. Kodachrome film has a wonderful magenta colour cast in mid-tones reminiscent of the classic days of early photography when shifts in color gave a faded look.

  • A young blonde girl of approximately 3 years-old stands on a lawn looking delighted. She giggles with great mirth at something that pleases her - possibly the way her father has posed her as if she's a ballerina, or maybe because it is her birthday and her present is the blue dress she is showing off to the viewer. The girl holds out her arms while holding a special pair of sunglasses. It is the summer of 1967 and this is a housing estate for British soldiers stationed in Bielefeld, Germany still during the Cold War. The girl's father is a solder serving in the British Army and the they all live in a house nearby with other expat families. Kodachrome film has a wonderful magenta colour cast in mid-tones and where a small light-leak has affected the far right, reminiscent of the classic days of early photography when shifts in color gave a faded look.

  • In light monsoonal rain, a lone pedestrian is seen from a high viewpoint, crossing a zebra crossing with a yellow grid box junction to his right in Central Hong Kong on the last day of British rule. The junction is empty and without any traffic but the word 'Look' is stencilled in white letters for the benefit of unwary pedestrians. An umbrella used by the unrecognisable person is a colour match with the painted striped road markings, identical to the British highway traffic code. The transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to the Peoples Republic of China (PRC), often referred to as "The Handover" occurred at midnight on June 30, 1997, signifying the end of British rule, and the transfer of legal and financial authority back to China. Hong Kong was once known as 'fragrant harbour' (or Heung Keung) because of the smell of transported sandal wood.

  • With a look of delight on her face, a four year-old girl stamps through fallen snow in a field near her home in Bielefeld, Germany. Wearing a vibrant red bobble hat and matching coat, she smiles towards the viewer with the pleasure of any child enjoying the excitement of fresh snow. Ski or sledge tracks can be seen at her feet but she is the only person in this empty landscape, as if she's walking on her own through the snowy hills. It is the winter of 1967 and the reds are very vibrant and dominant from the Kodachrome film used which also has a wonderful muted blue colour cast in the mid-tones giving the picture a chilly, wintry feel reminiscent of the classic days of early photography when shifts in color gave a faded and dated look.

  • Blue refuse bags have been left at the foot of a matching blue brick wall. In this side street of a south London suburb, we see the garbage lying on the pavement (sidewalk) surrounded by autumnal maple leaves. The wall in the background has been roughly painted, the bricks starting to crack. But the picture is about the similar colours of the wall to the Southwark borough council bags that are provided free for residents wishing to dispose of green garden waste only. If you live in a house or flat at street level you will have a blue box and bag for your recycling. In most cases, if you have a green rubbish bin you will also be able to use a blue box and bag.

  • The British Union Jack Flag flies in a stiff breeze, its colours of red-white and blue almost wholly horizontal as the wind tears through the blue skies and beneath wispy cirrus clouds, in Eastbourne, West Sussex, England UK. Tied to its flag-pole, this symbol of patriotic nationalism, evokes a sense of pride and spirit the British are known for - having encouraged them through two world wars and more recently, other military campaigns. The colours (colors) of Scotland's blue and white crosses and the English cross of St. George are merged to make this well-known symbol of the British Isles.
