  • An elderly lady makes her way from her community village Memorial Hall which she has been volunteering this winter morning as part of a charity funds raising event. The lady might be old and frail but her spirit is such that she still finds the time to integrate into community life and remains active despite her years. Walking beneath the wrought-iron sign in Cleeve Prior, Worcestershire, she edges under tentatively to make her way home wearing a quilted coat and her wedding ring on her gnarled hands. A chilly late-morning sun shines across the architecture of the building and this is the look of a lady happy with her morning's activities with fellow parishioners.

  • Surrounded by books and holy relics, a monk follower of Tibetan-Buddhism engages in Puja, or prayer, at the Kagyu Samye Ling Monastery and Tibetan Centre in Eskdalemuir, Scotland. This young western man wears traditional Tibetan monk's clothes, prays in a caravan adapted to become a woodland home in the woodland near the Centre. He is a western visitor, many of whom have had a troubled youth and are sometimes escaping a criminal past, who arrive in the Scottish wilderness for isolated Retreat periods, for short-term spiritual relaxation or to follow Tibetan teaching methods for discovering inner-peace, through prayer and meditation. This Tibetan Buddhist complex associated with the Kagyu school celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2007.

  • On a fine spring day, we see the ornate fountain, ornamental central garden and beyond, the grand terraced properties of Wellington Square, SW3 in the borough of Kensington & Chelsea, London England. The pristine houses are all identically painted white, their perfect iron railings all black as are their heavy gloss-painted doors. Wellington Square is off the King's Road Chelsea and was built around 1830: Named after the 1st Duke of Wellington (the heroic Commander-in-Chief of the British Army - most famously at Waterloo in 1815 - then a Tory politician and in 1834, temporary Prime Minister).

  • A classic Aston Martin DB5 is parked outside number 46, Chester Square SW1 in London's Belgravia. Such an example of great British design sits well outside this fine house on the western end of this Square laid out in 1840 by Thomas Cubitt and attracting the personalities of the day such as Mary Shelley, Violinist Yehudi Menuhin and Prime Ministers Harold Macmillan and Margaret Thatcher. Along with its sister squares Belgrave Square and Eaton Square, Chester Square is one of the most desirable addresses in London. The 1963 Aston Martin DB5 has a top speed of 141 mph (227 km/h) and was made famous by Sean Connery as James Bond in Goldfinger. .

  • A solo teenage player takes a shot at the net on a basketball court at the Cyprea Marine Foods (CMF) processing factory on Himmafushi Island, Maldives in the Indian Ocean. It is dusk near the equator and soon dark. The landscape is barren except for some young trees on the waterfront where two people are walking in the cool tropical air. Seen in the last, darkening light of day, the player leaps upwards and his arm stays where his ball left his hand to roll around the ring. The man is enjoying some leisure time at the end of his working day, possibly an employee of CMF who handle newly-caught tuna fish for export to the EU and the UK's supermarket food industry.

  • A group of young boys play in the calm waters of the Indian Ocean on Meedu Island, in the Republic of the Maldives. The shallows are a safe playground for these kids who swim and splash about in the clear shallows next to two small dhoni boats often used to fish using traditional hand and line, an important source of income for remote communities in this island nation. The sea is perfectly clear blue and the sand coral-white, in jeopardy to rising sea levels as global warming makes sea level locations like this vulnerable to flooding. The Maldives comprise of twenty-six atolls, featuring 1,192 coral islands of which 80 are holiday resorts with 200 inhabited by indigenous communities. This Islamic nation of 298 sq km (115 sq miles), lie seven hundred kilometres (435 miles) south-west of Sri Lanka.

  • Usually played in pairs for morning and evenings calls to prayer, preludes, and processions, two western nuns following Tibetan-Buddhism play their Rag-Dung (brass trumpets) in a garden at the Kagyu Samye Ling Monastery and Tibetan Centre in Eskdalemuir, Scotland. One nun looks across to check finger positions of her fellow-player and they are sat cross-legged on the lush grass surrounded with flowers and tall plants. The Rag-Dung is the most spectacular of Tibetan ritual copper horns and some are up to twenty feet long. With a deeply resonant sound it is relatively easy to play. Those following this branch of Buddhism arrive in the Scottish wilderness for isolated Retreat periods, for short-term spiritual relaxation or to follow Tibetan teaching methods for discovering inner-peace, through prayer and meditation.

  • Household refuse pollutes a coral beach on Meedu Island, an indigenous community in the Republic of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean. Packaging, foodstuffs and general waste has been tossed away on this otherwise beautiful place, north of the capital Male. Unfortunately, the practice of tossing away one's rubbish is a normal practice in this culture, the local people selfishly unconcerned about the future of their habitat and the health of their community. Only a few miles from Meedu are islands that serve as holiday resorts where families from Europe travel by air for the perffect vacation - unaware that fly-tipping is so widespread that it threatens this nation's worldwide status as a paradise on earth..

  • Three choristers sing hymns outside the Norman-built St Bartholomew the Great church in Smithfield, City of London. Open-mouthed they recite the songs with great enthusiasm, all looking down and concentrating on the Holy words from their songbooks. Dressed in white and red choir cassock robes they are all identical in their facial expression, their stance and posture. The Priory Church of St Bartholomew-the-Great is an Anglican church located at West Smithfield in the City of London, founded as an Augustinian priory in 1123.

  • Seen low from behind stage, a male voice choir are lined up to sing during their performance at an open-air temporary auditorium during the Lambeth Show, an inner-city cultural and family event held annually in Dulwich Park, a leafy suburb of South London. The choristers are dressed in white shirts which are untidily untucked from their dark trousers (pants). Their heads echo the purple, yellow and red spots from the overhead lights. The front of stage is covered by a curved ribbed roof structure that arches over the mens' heads. The singers look small in scale to the cavernous height of this ceiling, occupying a small percentage of the frame. We cannot see the choir's conductor, nor their audience but we get an impression of wide area in which to project their voices

  • Local Peckham shoppers stop to read the spontaneous messages of love on the Poundland peace wall after the London riots. In response to the violence and destruction that took place the week before, communities reacted with anger in a way rarely seen in a large UK city these days. The messages vary in their sentiment but generally echo a sense of disgust at the looting and rioting with brief notes of co-operation, advice and communal encouragement. Walls like these have sprung up in other locations where destruction was widespread and locals lost their convenience stores, sports shops and even homes.

  • As his mother washes clothes in a communal spring below, a young boy of about 9 years of age stands on a track in the Himalayan foothills near the town of Gorkha. Here, the British army traditionally recruits young men for the Gurkha regiment (as they have done since 1857). The lad is wearing a yellow hooded sweatshirt and like many in this region - even is sub-zero temperatures - flip-flops. Nepal is one of the world's poorest countries. The prospects for this child may mean they will in future, if the army has no place for him, he may try to seek work in cities like Kathmandu rather than face a lifetime's struggle in local agriculture, as can be seen in the valley below. Their supplies and contact with the outside world comes up from these tracks of boulders and stone along which either men or yaks carry up food for basic survival and luxury goods.
