  • A community spirited sign urges villagers to help themselves to rusted paint pots in the north Devon village of Mortehoe.

  • Decorator and part-time chimney sweep Alan Squires prepares to apply another coat of emulsion paint to the exterior walls of a cottage called Burnside in the tiny hamlet of Hallin, Waternish, on the Isle of Skye, Scottish Highlands. With his shadow looming large on the newly-painted off-white pebbledash that is rendered a warm orange in the low sunlight, Alan walks with his long roller after a day's decorating in this beautiful place near Dunvegan. Alan is an Englishman who came to Skye in 1987 for the community spirit. "everybody knows everybody' he says though admits that southerners come from the south in search of an idyllic lifestyle but harsh winters often send them back to warmer climates. Alain's fresh paint therefore needs to dry before winter weather blows in from the Atlantic. Image taken for the 'UK at Home' book project published 2008.

  • As the Coronavirus lockdown continues over the May Bank Holiday, the nation commemorates the 75th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day, the day that Germany officially surrendered in 1945) and in Dulwich, neighbours and residents emerge from their homes to party while still observing social distancing rules. Local residents joke about social distancing before together singing the wartime morale-raising songs of Dame Vera Lynn: 'White Cliffs of Dover' and 'We'll Meet Again', on 8th May 2020, in London, England.

  • Soon after setting sail from Miami, en-route to Cancun in Mexico, passengers of Carnival Cruise's Fun Ship Ecstasy liner are told to report on the top sun deck for the obligatory safety drill. Told to fetch their life vests from their respective cabins and suites, they have gathered at various muster points around the vessel to hear the crews' instructions about abandoning ship or the precuations needed to enter the water. We look down from a higher deck to see several dozen tourists on red vests, milling around awaiting the signal to return to their previous activities and entertainment. Operators like US-owned Carnival take these drills very seriously. Carnival was a pioneer in the concept of cheaper and shorter cruises. Its ships are known for their Las Vegas decor and entertainment. The cruise line calls its ships The Fun Ships and the MS Ecstasy is a Fantasy class cruise ship featuring two pools, whirlpools, a variety of dining options, nightclubs, a casino, and duty-free shopping. After Hurricane Katrina, she spent six months in New Orleans serving as quarters for refugees and relief workers. She suffered heavy damage in 1998 after the laundry room in the ship's stern caught fire damaging much of her stern and aft section.

  • An elderly lady makes her way from her community village Memorial Hall which she has been volunteering this winter morning as part of a charity funds raising event. The lady might be old and frail but her spirit is such that she still finds the time to integrate into community life and remains active despite her years. Walking beneath the wrought-iron sign in Cleeve Prior, Worcestershire, she edges under tentatively to make her way home wearing a quilted coat and her wedding ring on her gnarled hands. A chilly late-morning sun shines across the architecture of the building and this is the look of a lady happy with her morning's activities with fellow parishioners.

  • Seen from an aerial viewpoint which gives a perspective of deserted housing and empty roads, Jill Parmeter plays post woman. She is a resident of the experimental community village of Poundbury, Dorset, England. Delivering her own newsletter from door-to-door, she crosses Netherton Street and Tinten Lane to post her local news to residents and friends. The roads are empty of cars- nor is there anyone else to talk to. It is as if this community has vanished, leaving her alone. Poundbury is the visionary model village that Charles, Prince of Wales sought to develop in 1993 as a successful and pioneering town near Dorchester, built on land owned by his own Duchy of Cornwall, challenging otherwise poor post-war trends in town planning and to some extent following the New Urbanism concept from the US except that the design influences are European.

  • Two days after the London Bridge and Borough Market terrorist attack, Londoners from all faiths and religions attended a vigil outside City Hall, on Monday 5th June 2017, in the south London borough of Southwark, England. A prominent armed police presence guarded dignitaries and the public who came to the Southbank to remember the seven killed and many others left with life-changing injuries. The British spirit of defiance and to carry on with every day life, endures.

  • In the Villa of the Vettii in Pompeii we see a fresco in the lararium where a shrine to Roman guardian spirits of the household was situated. Family members performed daily rituals here to guarantee their protection by these domestic spirits. The first two characters are the deeply venerated 'lares' (presumed sons of Mercury and Lara) depicted as two young men in dancing postures, holding drinking horns that guaranteed prosperity. In the centre is the 'genius'. She is another guardian and fertility spirit ensuring the family line (gens) would continue and she wears the 'toga praetexta', bordered in purple, the garment of high-ranking Roman magistrates. Painted before the catastrophic eruption of Versuvius in AD79, these frescoes have been uncovered from metre-layers of volcanic ash and pumice but are now fading from moisture and cracked plaster...

  • With the promise of the UK government's Corinavirus lockdown being relaxed within a couple of few days, local Fine Art artist Kevin McKeon has added to his existing artwork with another tribute and thanks to NHS (National Health) workers who pass-by this location in Herne Hill in south London, on 7th May 2020, in London, England. Adding to his already popular NHS 'house' on the pavement, McKeon (whose arts practice is normally figurative and heritage carving projects) has created a circular podium attached to a traffic sign pole, of miniature healthcare employees holding placards reading 'Save Lives' and 'Help Us Help You', in the spirit of supporting the NHS during the Covid pandemic. McKeon says the piece was made during his lockdown time at home, shared with a partner who works in Mental Health.
