  • As the community fill up their water butts and buckets, a young girl drinks fresh water from a cup supplied by a water tanker, provided by Thames Water during the southern England drought of 1989. During the heatwave that saw reservoirs depleted and in the south west, dry up altogether. A hosepipe ban and in some areas, tap water failed too so tankers stationed in affected areas so locals could fill up for essential use. Tourism increased as people visited tourist areas e.g. beaches at the weekends and took holidays in the UK rather than travelling abroad for the sun

  • The Thomas Telford-designed church on Ulva, Isle of Mull, Scotland. The Telford Church, Ardalum Ulva. The church was designed by Thomas Telford and built between 1827 and 1828 for a cost of £1,500. Dedicated to St. Ewan of Arstraw the nearest wing has now been partitioned off for use for worship. The remainder of the building is used as a community hall. The church boasts that in 1847 everyone on Ulva attended services including one catholic and one atheist. Isle of Ulva, Inner Hebrides. Ulva is a privately owned island with a thriving population of approximately 16 people who are involved variously in traditional sheep and cattle farming, fish farming, oyster farming and tourism. There are no tarmac roads on Ulva, so the main form of transport is quad bikes used by all inhabitants, young and old. The proprietors (the Howard family) are dedicated to creating a balance between the needs of the community and the preservation of one of Scotland’s most unique, beautiful and accessible islands...This Parliamentary church was one of five churches on Mull and Iona to be designed by Thomas Telford and was completed, along with the manse, in 1828. In the mid 1950s Lady Congleton who owned the island purchased the church and the larger partof it was converted into a community hall. Only the north west portion was retained for ecclesiastical use. The church is now privately owed and a couple of services are conducted every year at Easter and Harvest time

  • Showing a Neighbourhood Watch sticker to discourage crime, a map and various by-laws, the Resident's Association Information Board is attached to a brick wall on Middlemarsh Street in the experimental community village of Poundbury, Dorset, England. The wooden case needs treating and the glass needs wiping but there is a feeling of security and of a close and friendly community. Poundbury is the visionary model village that Charles, Prince of Wales sought to develop in 1993 as a successful and pioneering town near Dorchester, built on land owned by his own Duchy of Cornwall, challenging otherwise poor post-war trends in town planning and to some extent following the New Urbanism concept from the US except that the design influences are European.

We see the perfectly clear blue sea surrounding an island of white coral beach sand, a harbour, holiday apartments and importantly coastal defence barriers that may defend against rising sea levels as global warming makes sea level locations like this vulnerable to flooding. The Maldives comprise of twenty-six atolls, featuring 1,192 coral islands of which 80 are holiday resorts with 200 inhabited by indigenous communities. This Islamic nation of 298 sq km (115 sq miles), lie seven hundred kilometres (435 miles) south-west of Sri Lanka..

  • An elderly lady makes her way from her community village Memorial Hall which she has been volunteering this winter morning as part of a charity funds raising event. The lady might be old and frail but her spirit is such that she still finds the time to integrate into community life and remains active despite her years. Walking beneath the wrought-iron sign in Cleeve Prior, Worcestershire, she edges under tentatively to make her way home wearing a quilted coat and her wedding ring on her gnarled hands. A chilly late-morning sun shines across the architecture of the building and this is the look of a lady happy with her morning's activities with fellow parishioners.

  • Seen from an aerial viewpoint which gives a perspective of deserted housing and empty roads, Jill Parmeter plays post woman. She is a resident of the experimental community village of Poundbury, Dorset, England. Delivering her own newsletter from door-to-door, she crosses Netherton Street and Tinten Lane to post her local news to residents and friends. The roads are empty of cars- nor is there anyone else to talk to. It is as if this community has vanished, leaving her alone. • Household refuse pollutes a coral beach on Meedu Island, an indigenous community in the Republic of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean. Packaging, foodstuffs and general waste has been tossed away on this otherwise beautiful place, north of the capital Male. Unfortunately, the practice of tossing away one's rubbish is a normal practice in this culture, the local people selfishly unconcerned about the future of their habitat and the health of their community. Only a few miles from Meedu are islands that serve as holiday resorts where families from Europe travel by air for the perffect vacation - unaware that fly-tipping is so widespread that it threatens this nation's worldwide status as a paradise on earth..

Graffiti has been sprayed on the brickwaork where the mural has been painted near a junction and on the wall of a corner community shop. Rockingham is located in south London near the Elephant and Castle. Notorious for youth issues including gangs and knife crime where 12-year-olds are seen holding knives in broad daylight. For families with young children this would be an intimidating community in which to live.

  • The fishing fleet of Tarbert on Scotland's Mull of Kintyre lies moored at the dock of this pretty coastal village in the Western Isles. Their colourful hulls shine in late afternoon sunshine as they are tied up awaiting another outing at sea to provide for this small fishing community a living and a livelihood for its families. But in the foreground sit a young couple whose prospects are not so positive: they rest on a bench in silhouette, one smoking a cigarette while turned to the friend who stares out to distant rolling hills. It is a scene of hopelessness that reflects modern life for the youth in remote communities where jobs are scarce and their futures far from secure. In an otherwise idyllic Scottish landscape, we guess at the disintegration of society up here - the scourge of economic downturn and future social problems.

We see in the foreground the freshly painted Royal Mail post box which is lit by early morning sunshine telling us that the next collection is at 2.45pm despite it being 8.50am. This branch serves the local community of this Skye town, close to the Skye Bridge and is not only a place to post letters and packages but to buy miscellaneous supplies like newspapers and food at a time when rural sub-post offices are threatened with closure by a financially-troubled Royal Mail. Small villages like this often say that the post office is the ties its folk together, acting as a nucleus for information about village life. Their closure would therefore mean that the fabric of such remote communities are in jeopardy.
