  • Wearing a large green helmet with the number 26 painted on the front, a worried-looking black soldier recruit gazes into the distance in front of a white army instructor at the large Garrison at Catterick, England. Here, the Parachute Regiment (The Paras) - hold part of their famous basic training programme called Pegasus (P) Company. The most notorious selection procedure in the British Army. After initial recruitment, each student is sent to either pass or fail a set of 9 events from which a total score of 90 points is possible. 58% or more passes, less fails. Events like the 18 mile Forced March followed by a further 5 miles can earn 10 points though this will inevitably prove too much for many young man, desperate to pass P Company and earn his prestigious beret (Like the Foreign Legion).

  • At the height of financial uncertainty, we see from a low pavement angle investors queueing outside the Maddox Street branch of the troubled Northern Rock Bank, off Regent Street, Mayfair, in September 2007. Their hard-earned savings appear to be in jeopardy after the bank announced an emergency loan from the Bank of England. Despite reassurances from officials who insisted that the Bank which has £113bn in assets, was not in danger of going bust, concerned men and women wait in line, some with their faces on view and reading newspapers or more commonly, wishing to remain anonymous and keeping their backs to reporters and cameras. The rush of customers demanding their investments almost spelled the demise of the bank with over £2bn removed from accounts in a few days. Northern Rock struggled since money markets seized up over the summer. .

  • Awaiting the visit from his local country doctor to pay him a visit to his remote French farmhouse, an elderly gentleman sits alone in his favourite armchair. Uncertain what the future may hold, the man is old and frail and he looks down to the floor of this front room with worry across his face. He is suffering from cancer and may not live long but the presence of another human being, especially a doctor, is a small comfort from. Someone to share his concerns with and to seek advice from this terminal condition. It is a bright summer morning but even with the sun, it's a gloomy part of the house in which he lives alone.

  • With his body in shade and only his head in the sun, a Portuguese man stands in the street of central Lisbon to read the headlines of national and provincial newspapers which are pinned by their top right corners for passers-by to glance at or buy. Lit by early morning sun, the daily or weekly periodicals are set in a neat row for the benefit of this man and other citizens of the Portuguese capital. Ornate square tile mosaics are set in the pavement (sidewalk) in a design style that Lisbon is well-known for. In an age of mass-communications, reading one's media on paper in such a manner already seems old fashioned.

  • In the privacy of her own country home, an elderly French lady is about to have eye-drops administered by her local doctor in the Vosges town of Ban de Laveline. Holding her eyelids up with a thumb in preparation of giving the woman the necessary medicine, the young health professional reaches for his equipment and the lady is left looking rather startled and uncomfortable for a few moments as her eye stares wildly. We are in her small cottage on the outskirts of town and the doctor is making his rounds to various patients unable to attend his daily surgery. The lady wears a colourful apron, typical of French working people, and is possibly in her seventies, living alone with only kind neighbours to ensure her safety. ....http://www.france-voyage.com/en/

  • Displayed in the window of a traditional Chinese medicine shop in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, are the labels and plastic bags containing some of the 500 Chinese herbs that are in use today in Eastern herbal remedies, of which 250 or so are very commonly used in the treatment of ailments and diseases. Rather than being prescribed individually, single herbs are combined into formulas designed to adapt to specific needs of individual patients. Herbal formulas contain from 3 to 25 herbs or animal parts, some sourced from endangered species. As with diet therapy, each herb has one or more of the five flavours/functions and one of five "temperatures" ("Qi") (hot, warm, neutral, cool, cold). After the herbalist determines the energetic temperature and functional state of the patient's body, they prescribe a mixture of herbs tailored to balance disharmony.

  • In the peristyle of the House of the Vettii in Pompeii is a fresco where an ancient painted mural to the Greek Goddess Urania was unearthed from volcanic ash after 2,000 years. In Greek mythology, Urania which stems from the Greek word for 'heavenly' or 'of heaven', was the muse of astronomy. Some accounts list her as the mother of the musician Linus, usually depicted as having a globe in her left hand, she can foretell the future by the arrangement of the stars and is often associated with Universal Love and the Holy Spirit. Those who are most concerned with philosophy and the heavens are dearest to her. Painted before the catastrophic eruption of Versuvius in AD79, the frescoes have been uncovered from metre-layers of ash and pumice but are now fading from moisture and cracked plaster.

  • Hermit, Tom Leppard, 72, has lived in seclusion at this unidentified spot on the Isle of Skye, Scotland for 22 years. He sits contemplating his quiet life in a self-made shelter largely cut-off from the outside world. Wind and rain-proof against harsh Scottish winters, his army survival skills keep him fit and healthy but his memory is fading and suffers muscular ailments. None of his possessions suffer from damp or mildew because everything he owns is wrapped in plastic containers carefully stored in special holes about his camp. Few know his exact whereabouts but concerned locals visit when weather prevents him from crossing a 2km-wide Loch in an old canoe. His days are spent washing, cleaning and carrying out maintenance jobs that keeps his home clean and fresh. Tom is a former solder and sailor and chose this spot when he sought ultimate solitude.

  • Hermit, Tom Leppard 72, has been living in seclusion at this unidentified spot on the Isle of Skye, Scotland for 22 years. He crouches as he emerges from his self-made shelter, largely cut-off from the outside world. Converting the north-facing dry-stone walls into a home against harsh Scottish winters, he uses a knowledge of survival skills to help him stay fit and largely healthy although his memory is fading and muscular ailments trouble him. Few know his exact whereabouts but concerned locals visit when weather prevents him from crossing a 2km-wide Loch in an old canoe. A tarpaulin roof is weighted down by heavy rocks as winds can be fierce this far north. His days are spent washing, cleaning and carrying out maintenance jobs that keeps his home clean and fresh. Tom is a former solder and sailor and chose this spot when he sought solitude.

  • A crowd of workers listen to speeches by their trade union during a council strike in Liverpool. A sea of faces looks towards us, their expressions serious and concerned at the loss of their jobs and livelihoods. Their trade union has organised this meeting out in the open air in the city centre, a protest against unfair reduction of earnings and an erosion of working conditions. These people are English Liverpool council workers recently made redundant and have gathered in the city centre to express their willingness to act againist their former-employers.

  • A portrait of a local butcher in the Essex seaside town of Frinton-on-Sea. Proud of his produce of fresh joints and carcasses of fresh meat, his business shows a successful and protitable financial concern in this Essex seaside town, largely inhabited by the older generation. We see in the background, hanging pork on hooks and beef joints in the display cabinet with a model of a butcher with his chopping block. A butcher is an ancient trade, whose duties may date back to the domestication of livestock, butchers formed guilds in England as far back as 1272. Today, many jurisdictions offer trade certifications for butchers. Some areas expect a three-year apprenticeship followed by the option of becoming a master butcher.

  • Company employees at defence, security and aerospace company Thales' exhibition stand at the Farnborough Air Show. The MoD's newest and most sophisticated surveillance and targeting drone, the Watchkeeper, is undergoing trials at Aberporth in west Wales. While the arguments over America's policy of "assassination by drone" rage across Pakistan and Afghanistan, fuelling public concern over the cold-eyed automation of warfare, the future of UAVs is quietly taking shape here on the Welsh coast, where there is daily proof that UAVs and manned aircraft can co-exist in British airspace.

  • British Army soldiers gather outside the hospitality chalet of aerospace manufacturer Thales. Standing in mid-day sun, the troops are dressed in ISAF desert uniform, alongside a company-built Watchkkeper an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Watchkeeper WK450 is a £800 million contract awarded in July 2005 to Thales to provide the British Army with or all weather, Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) use. It has a weight of 450 kg and a payload capacity of 150 kg, and will have a typical endurance of 17 hours.
