  • A baby girl is crawling on all-fours along her parents' pavement, in a suburban London back garden. Her body weight is spread on two legs and one arm while she moves along confidently, placing her other hand on the warm surface, one summer day. The infant is a approximately 10 months and is gaining strength from her legs which will soon be strong enough to stand and eventually walk. The summer sun is on her back and the shadow of garden chair furniture is on the path alongside her. She has a contented expression on her face as if her little adventure in a big outside, wider world is for her to explore.

  • "More than you can chew." A ten month-old infant uses new teeth to bite her mother's nose in the back garden of their Victorian south London terrace home. The mum winces in pain as the child sinks her new milk teeth into her skin but they enjoy a warm summer afternoon, playfully interacting with each other in a moment of parental love and harmony. The girl wears a short-sleeved t-shirt and has plump arms of baby fat, a healthy sign of a contented infant. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • A young professional couple lie in the sun and share a humerous moment. They sit with their backs to intricate and delicate tiling which depict the Spanish province of Coruna, at the Plaza de España, Seville, Andalucia, Spain. The lady is sitting with her partner's head in her lap, indicating romance and contentedness as she suppresses a giggle. They are both lit by strong sunshine and gives the impression of a perfect moment in their loving relationship. This semicircular enclosure was built by Aníbal González, the great architect of Sevillian regionalism, for the Ibero-American exposition held in 1929.

  • An English caucasian lady smiles at something of interest to the viewer's right. She is a wrinkled female in her sixties, a healthy person with her own original teeth and whose untidy hair is greying and whose skin is slightly tanned under a summer sun. She wears a blue shirt with a wide collar, fashionable in the 1980s (eighties) and has a bemused, attentive expression as if entertained by something of humour out of frame. This is someone's mother and grandmother, at an age when her hard-working life is nearly over and her pension is hopefully covering her everyday needs.

  • A portrait of a mother in her 41st year has been gathering heather in handfuls and holds up her young child who grins towards his father who is taking the picture at a park near the Essex seaside town of Southend. It is the summer of 1960 and the mum's dress is styled from the previous decade: blue with white spots and pearl necklace. She too is smiling as she grasps the flowers and her child on a warm day. Oddly, the boy looks as though he is wearing a girl's dress which may have been a hand-me-down from an older sibling or just the trend then.

  • A husband and wife make their way along a pavement towards the entrance of the Ascot racecourse where the annual Ladies' Day event is held as part of the English social season calendar. Leading the way and carrying two walking sticks and in a polythene bag, his best jacket for the dress-code is important if one is allowed access to the private enclosures. He wears a top hat and waste coat as he hobbles along with wife in tow. She is behind him rummaging through her handbag perhaps looking for tickets or cash. Royal Ascot is held every June and is one of the main dates on the sporting calendar and social season.

  • A young boy creates ripples as he plays with his radio-controlled boat in the River Thames at Dorchester, Oxfordshire. The sun is hidden behind a line of trees and the boy who is backlit stands in the shallow part of the river up to his ankles, wearing his swimming costume. The small boat is only a few feet from the antenna that controls its movement. It is a scene of idyllic tranquility, a childhood of happy summer days. Here the Thames is at its most serene, where visitors enjoy its shallows with the fear of strong currents, tides or large boating activity.

  • An elderly couple sit in peace on a quiet beach in the seaside resort of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. In a classic English beach holiday scene, the husband and wife relax, reclining in a pair of deckchairs at a kiosk that dispenses these quaintly British beach chairs. A sign telling other holidaymakers to collect and pay for their time in them appears on the freshly-painted clap-board wall. As the lazy completes word puzzles in her magazine, the gentleman reads his regular copy of the Daily Mirror tabloid newspaper. He is tanned, perhaps spent his summer tending his garden back home but here on holiday, they both have the chance to spend some time together away from home, in a resort known for its beaches and coastal adventures.

  • An elderly lady makes her way from her community village Memorial Hall which she has been volunteering this winter morning as part of a charity funds raising event. The lady might be old and frail but her spirit is such that she still finds the time to integrate into community life and remains active despite her years. Walking beneath the wrought-iron sign in Cleeve Prior, Worcestershire, she edges under tentatively to make her way home wearing a quilted coat and her wedding ring on her gnarled hands. A chilly late-morning sun shines across the architecture of the building and this is the look of a lady happy with her morning's activities with fellow parishioners.

With complete trust, she lets herself go and yields to her own natural buoyancy as she floats amid this seemingly wide ocean of chlorinated water belonging to a hotel on Ocean Drive. • Standing on the back of his utility vehicle, a man empties the contents of his dustbin onto a growing pile of rubbish in a recreation park in the otherwise affluent Allerton area of Liverpool, Merseyside, England, during the Merseyside dustmans' strike of 1991. Adding to this mountain of refuse, the 'Scouse' man (someone from Liverpool) is seen surrounded by black binliners and items from domestic homes which have been allocated this public space to become a temporary landfill. The industrial action aginst the local authority - over pay and working conditions - was a health problem for Liverpool's population during the summer of 1991 when streets filled with rubbish. Vermin like rats ran around and public city parks such as this were filled with every kind of refuse and garbage.

  • A holy Sadhu man attracts a crowd on the Maidan in central Calcutta, India. Near some ballustrades built by the British during the last years of the Raj, the man is leaning forward on his knees and his head is buried in gravel. Practicing Tapas or Niyamas, is one form of Austerity that holy men like this perform to cleanse themselves of bad thoughts. It is a conservation of energy; an increase of power in the system by sense control; a process of positive-thought, self-imposed hardships and inner-strength - all to gain a higher being for oneself. They might stand in cold water in winter, stand on or bury their heads in earth. Niyamas also breeds non-violence, truthfullness, non-stealing, moderation, non-possessiveness, purity, contentment, discipline, study and surrender.

Two of them are in the foreground and each wear sun glasses, each holding cigars that may be Cuban in origin, a popular source of tobacco leaf in this region of America. They have recently been immersed in the sea and water drips down their rather flabby bodies with the gentleman on the left sucking on his cigar with a belly that expands around his tanned midriff. On the grassy bank at Mudchute, a city farm on London's Isle of Dogs, England, the two people have been joined on this war summer afternoon by a small goat who is making its way along, munching at the lush vegetation. • Peering comically over a hedgerow, a Guernsey cow looks on in a field on the small British-owned Channel Island. Renowned for the rich flavour of its milk, as well as its hardiness and docile disposition descended from two breeds brought over from nearby France (Isigny cattle from Normandy and the Froment du Léon from Brittany) the 450 to 500 kg Guernsey produces around 6,000 litres per cow per year. Its milk has a golden colour due to an exceptionally high content of beta carotene, a source of Vitamin A, which helps reduce the risks of certain cancers. The milk also has a high butterfat content of 5% and a high protein content of 3.7% making it deliciously creamy. The island of Guernsey is divided into ten parishes and along with its larger and more commercial Jersey, is situated in the warm English Channel, nearer to French than the English coast.

In 1887, sugar-boiling factory owner Ben Bullock bought some plain stick candy band had the idea of putting ‘Blackpool Rock’ through the centre of the rock. Now a major industry in the holiday season in Britain and many seaside towns have their versions with their own names running through the rock. Modern seaside rock is thicker, about 1 inch, and more solid than the original form. It is a bright day on the beach at Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, England. Bathers are running on the sand in the background and the man and his dog are content to watch the world go by from their promenade bench. Their is a great deal of trust and love these two have for each other - the gentleman having brought his dog on holiday to the seaside with him, rather than leave him with friends or in kennels. The dog is healthy, lithe and obviously has great speed in those muscular legs, vastly different to the man, whose frame is heavy and slow.

Whippets are generally quiet and gentle dogs, and may be content to spend much of the day resting. After a chance to run about and let off steam, they are happy to become couch-potatoes. They are loyal and friendly. Because of this, whippets are known to have been used in aged care facilities.

  • An inspection by the Thames Water Utilities sewer cleaning team looks closely at Victorian-era brick wall linings of the Fleet River's Victorian-built storm sewer of Blackfriars, beneath the streets of the City of London, on 19th June 1994, in London, England. Discarded fats from restaurants congeal in sewer networks leading to blocked pipework. Sewer men shovel the deposits and bring them in vats to the surface. In the early 19th century the River Thames was practically an open sewer, with disastrous consequences for public health in London, including numerous cholera epidemics with the The Great Stink of 1858 a turning point. Intercepting sewers constructed between 1859 and 1865 were fed by 450 miles (720 km) of main sewers that in turn conveyed the contents of some 13,000 miles (21,000 km) of smaller local sewers using 318m bricks, 880,000 cubic yards of concrete and mortar and excavation of over 3.5m tonnes of earth.
