  • A hunched, homeless elderly man walks along Fenchurch Street in the City of London while younger and affluent office workers saunter past, smiling and with a care in the world. It is a scene of social class division, the contrasts between wealth and poverty, have and have nots, prospects and no hope for the future and of old age and youth. The old man carries a plastic bag with all his belongings and the workers carry their lunch in a paper bag. They are not only smart and he dishevelled but they stand tall and he is stooped, further proof of the hard, demanding life he leads on the capital's streets.

  • An EU flag and the Prussian Eagle sit side-by-side, on 16th May 2000, in Frankfurt, Germany. The EU flag hangs limply alongside the old German world Prussian eagle near the balcony of Frankfurt's Rathaus or Town hall in historic Romerberg Square. The yellow stars formed into a circle of the European Union member states lie on a background of blue but the bronze green eagle harks back to a previous era of German politics and culture. The state of Prussia developed from the State of the Teutonic Order. The original flag of the Teutonic Knights had been a black cross on a white flag. Emperor Frederick II in 1229 granted them the right to use the black Eagle of the Holy Roman Empire.[citation needed] This "Prussian Eagle" remained the coats of arms of the successive Prussian states until 1947. • Hopton's Alms Houses, London SE1. Hopton's Almshouses were built in 1752 by trustees appointed under the will of Charles Hopton. 26 poor persons were chosen to occupy the houses. Almsmen were allowed to marry but the original rules were framed to prevent children of the almsmen becoming chargeable to Christ Church parish. Each almsman was to receive a chaldron of coals and a payment of not less than £6 a year. The almshouses consist of a continuous range of two-storey cottages on three sides of the central lawn with trees and paved paths.

  • The large construction project known as the Pinnacle, on Bishopsgate in the financial City of London. Construction work has been suspended again on the Pinnacle in the City of London. Contractor Brookfield is understood to have been told to stop work following more funding concerns over the Square Mile's tallest tower. Brookfield restarted work last September after developer Arab Investments put together a new finance package. But a lack of a pre-let tenant has now caused further delays on site leaving Byrne Bros concrete cores standing idle. The Bishopsgate Tower, informally referred to as The Pinnacle, was to be a 288 m (945 ft), 64-storey skyscraper in the centre of London's main financial district.

  • Two obese parents and their normal weight child sit with their backs to the viewer on the edge of a pool on the open deck of the Fun Ship Ecstasy belonging to Carnival Cruises, as it sails through the Gulf of Mexico. The two adults and the girl wear bathing costumes and their tanned skin is exposed to the sun. They are sitting on the rectangular pool-side tiles taking in the atmosphere and the blue water that they're facing. We see the comparison of healthy youth and oversized adulthood, the parents' wide posteriors dwarf the normal size of their child.

Passing a boarded-up greengrocer that probably once served the local community, the lady strides past its sealed window and the name of its past owner, obviously proud of her business' quality in an otherwise run-down area. Toxteth saw serious rioting in 1981 and the legacy of social-deprivation ever since meant a breakdown of law and order. Used as the epitome of poor inner-city Britain, it is located to the south of the city and is synonymous with social issues, degradation and poverty with some of the most underprivileged families in the UK. Recently many streets in the worst areas have been demolished including a threat to Beatle Ringo Starr's childhood home.

  • An elderly homeless man walks slowly past a Barclays Bank cash dispenser at which business people are either queueing or typing in their PIN numbers from cash accounts, or simply passing-by. One middle-aged gent stands eyeing the poor man suspiciously while other men of wealth, prospects and prosperity are tall and stand erect in smart suits and polished shoes, the homeless man is hunched and dishevelled, carrying a supermarket bag - perhaps containing all of his worldly goods. It is a tragic scene of extremes between the haves and the have-nots; the rich and poor; between people with hope and those in despair. This is the City of London, near Fenchurch Street Station where the UK's insurance companies are based and it is impossible to know if any of these men in smart clothes are the same age as the poor man.

Southwark Council’s development partner, Lendlease is regenerating over 28 acres across three sites at the heart of Elephant & Castle, in what is the latest major regeneration opportunity in zone 1 London. The vision for the £1.5 billion regeneration is to build on the area’s strengths and vibrant character in order to re-establish Elephant & Castle as one of London’s most flourishing urban quarters. The Elephant & Castle regeneration is of a scale rarely seen in central London and includes almost 3,000 new homes, plus office, retail, community, leisure and restaurant space.
