  • We are looking up from the ground to crowds gathered in three levels of a multi-story car park to await athletes pass during the London Marathon. The runners will make their way through the streets of East London beneath these spectators who have been patiently waiting for their friends and families to pass below. It is a great viewpoint from which to view such a sporting spectacle and we are peering up at the supporters leaning against the discoloured (discolored) concrete architecture dating back to the 1970s. It is the best elevated place to witness the race. There are three rows of 5 columns totalling 15 seperate windows and each one is full of families young and old. They resemble the compartments of a garden pet hutch where rabbits are kept in cramped conditions.

  • Vinnie Browse switches off his overhead reading light in his Junior Rating bunk aboard HMS Vigilant, a 16,000 ton, 150m long Vanguard class nuclear submarine while moored at HM Naval Base Clyde, Faslane, Scotland. Vigilant has a crew of 140 men and when at sea, only incoming communication, family-grams, are allowed so many months away on operational duty can be tough on home life. On-board entertainment is therefore important for morale. The Vanguard Class SSBN (Ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear) provides the United Kingdom's strategic nuclear deterrent and carries Trident II ballistic missiles, powered by a pressurised water reactor (PWR) fuelled by a ton of fissionable uranium elements producing huge amounts of energy. • A few miles from the finish line, this long-distance runner has stopped in agony to lean against the walls beneath Tower Bridge during th London Marathon, England. Pushing against the solid wall and stretching his cramped leg muscles, he grimaces in pain as other runners speed past on their way completing their personal race. Pushed to his limits, this man needs to continue a few more Kilometres to claim his medal and to claim victory. But he still has to overcome the pain of an overworked body. When glycogen runs low, the body must then burn stored fat for energy, which does not burn as readily. When this happens, the runner will experience dramatic fatigue. This is called "hitting the wall".

  • With a grimace on her pained face, a female Officer Cadet at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst splashes through a water obstacle during an endurance race. Recruits are running a 5 mile steeplechase around the Academy grounds to assess individual stamina and accumulate team points. Sandhurst is an institution which has bred staff officers since 1800. Today it trains future officers for the demands of leadership and military understanding of military understanding. Students are tested for their command instincts, intellect, strength of character and physical endurance often under great psychological pressure - the demands asked of them in modern warfare. Failure in this test might not necessarily mean dismissal though perseverance or refusal to give up won't harm their prospects.

  • A long-distance runner prepares for the London Marathon before the race begins, whilst warming-up in Greenwich Park, London England. Seen in close-up detail, we see his hands and fingers massaging Vaseline jelly into his thighs and groin area to help avoid chafing during the annual 26-mile race through London's streets. He is wearing bright, garish running shorts decorated wth the British Union Jack flag, a sure sign of his patriotic attitude. Other runners are in the background, also preparing clothing that will be taken from the start to the finish line in Westminster.

  • Using the Ball Mat Flooring System, below the flooring of economy class, a cargo handler manhandles a container of air freight into position in the hold of a Sri Lankan Airlines Airbus A340 that is about to depart from Male, the capital of the Republic of the Maldives to Colombo. Inside the aluminium box is fresh tuna fish, freshly caught in the Indian Ocean and bound for the supermarkets of the EU and in particular, the UK whose insatiable appetite for fresh, perishable and sustainable foodstuffs make this fast and efficient form of transport important to speedy delivery. Every square inch is accounted for but as well as passengers' baggage, the cramped spaces beneath this modern airliner store loaded revenue-rich cargo though specially-pressurised and heated compartments accommodate live animals.
