  • Dawn bather covers his face with red cloth as sun rises over the Hooghly River, KolIkata. It is dawn in Calcutta, West Bengal, India and on the West bank of the Hooghly River the sun is rising from across the Howrah Bridge. Six bathers are either drying themselves after washing in the river, or are undressing to do so. It is a scene of inner-peace, a tranquillity surrounded by the chaotic pace of Indian life in this city. The engineering of the bridge stretches across the water towards the city beyond. The bridge is one of three on the Hooghly River and is a famous symbol of Kolkata and West Bengal. Bearing the daily weight of approximately 150,000 vehicles and 4,000,000 pedestrians. It is one of the longest bridges of its type in the world. The Hooghly River is an approximately 260 km long distributary of the Ganges River.

  • Seen from the air at dawn, dozens of F-4 Phantom fighters from the Cold War-era are laid out in grids across the arid desert at Davis-Monthan Air Forbe Base near Tucson Arizona. These retired aircraft whose air frames are too old for flight are being stored then recycled, their aluminium worth more than their sum total at this repository for old military fighter and bomber aircraft. They sit in neat rows in low light, their shadowy wings are blue in colour but their fuselage are stripped of markings, being taped up against the dust. This is a scene of once-great flying machines relegated to sad scrap, long-after the Soviet Union's own demise when western armies fought a war of propaganda. .

  • As blue dawn light becomes another wintry day in south London, the glow of a car's brake lights shines through a covering of fresh snow. The driver has only swept the vehicle's back window with a rear wiper but with her foot on the brake pedal, she is about to set off on a drive to work this morning on roads that have controversially, not been gritted or salted by council highway workers. The surface is therefore still snowy in this residential area of Herne Hill, SE24, London and is a treacherous surface on which to maintain wheel and tyre (tire) traction and many accidents will result, including the heavy lorry (truck) which is about to climb this hill and which will soon prevent him from going much further.

This town is the original route that the Athenian messenger Pheidippides ran in 490BC to deliver news of the Greek victory over Persia in the Battle of (Marathonas) Marathon. Nowadays, this is a rather unattractive town with few echoes of Greece's ancient glories although the 29th modern Olympic circus came home in 2004. The modern games share many characteristics with its ancient counterpart. Corruption, politics and cheating interfered then as it does now and the 2004 Athens Olympiad echoed both what was great and horrid about the past.

The mirror-like surface is at Dorchester-on-Thames, just above the Thame's confluence with the River Thames. The River Thames is the second longest river in the United Kingdom and the longest river entirely in England (215 miles or 346 km long). Historically the Thames was only so-named downstream of the village; upstream it is named the Isis, and Ordnance Survey maps continue to label the river as "River Thames or Isis" until Dorchester.

  • Meat porters drag old carts laden with freshly-butchered meat in Smithfield market. One man's coat reveals blood stains and one calls to the other as they walk. Meat has been bought and sold at Smithfield for over 800 years, making it one of the oldest markets in London. A livestock market occupied the site as early as the 10th century. Approximately 120,000 tons of produce pass through the market each year. As well as meat and poultry, products such as cheese, pies, and other delicatessen goods are available. Buyers including butchers, restaurateurs and caterers are able see the goods for themselves and drive away with what they have bought. Bargaining between buyers and sellers at Smithfield sets the guidelines for meat and poultry prices throughout the UK.

Historically, the Thames has long been a route for shipping that kept the capital supplied and although the docks have seen huge decreases in traffic and volume since the second world war, Tilbury remains a busy hub for containerized vessels arrivng from all over the world.

It is late-morning and in the hazy distance tall old cranes that once lifted cargo from the holds of ships - before the development of containerization - rise from the waters on the south bank opposte the new Tilbury Docks. On its surface, a seagull dips to catch a fish. Historically, the Thames has long been a route for shipping that kept the capital supplied and although the docks have seen huge decreases in traffic and volume since the second world war, Tilbury Docks (Europe's only specialist short-sea terminal, handling 120,000 containers each year.) remain a busy hub for containerized vessels arrivng from all over the world.

  • The Hamburg-registered Mol Caledon ship passes the giant dredging machinery at npower's Tilbury power station on the River Thames northern shore, Essex England. Having just departed from Tilbury Docks with the evening sun glinting off the stern's reflective surfaces, stacks of tall containers are heaped high but evenly spread for stability along the massive vessel. They head out towards open sea, navigating through deeper water channels that naturally get shallower as silt chokes the waterways. • The sun rises over the River Thames and City of London, the UK capital's financial heart. The solar power gathers in strength and intensity as it climbs from below the horizon and behind City buildings, its circular disc a flaming yellow which is soon to turn a deeper hue over the capital's orange skies at dawn. The tidal river is calm with only moored barges in the middle, used to secure other boats to their sides. The City wakes before another day of trading in the financial, banking and insurance institutions. The dome of St Paul's Cathedral is centre to the skyline.

  • As blue dawn light brightens to become another wintry day in south London a commuter awaits the arrival of a distant red bus to climb a slippery hill. Standing by the timetable of the bus stop on Red Post Hill in the borough of Southwark traffic approaches slowly on a road that controversially appears not to have been gritted properly for vehicles to maintain a proper grip on this snowy surface. Headlights point uphill and the freshly-fallen snow has started to freeze so wheel and tyre traction will prove ever-difficult for those trying to journey to work.
