  • Beyond Chinese TV media images, a red sun sinks behind late cloud in the west, a glowing red sky illuminates Hong Kong's harbour, this scene is symbolic of the decline of empire, the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) two years after this picture was taken, often referred to as "The Handover" on June 30, 1997. Midnight of that day signified the end of British rule and the transfer of legal and financial authority back to China. From this famous ferry terminal that protrudes out into the busy waters of this colony's harbour from the Kowloon side of the territory. Hong Kong was once known as 'fragrant harbour' (or Heung Keung) because of the smell of transported sandal wood in the days before China ceded its territory to the British for 155 years until the 1997 deadline.

The Curtiss C-46 Commando is a transport aircraft originally derived from a commercial high-altitude airliner design. It was instead used as a military transport during World War II by the United States Army Air Forces as well as the U.S. Navy/Marine Corps under the designation R5C. Known to the men who flew them as "The Whale," the "Curtiss Calamity," the "plumber's nightmare" and the "flying coffin," At the time of its production, the C-46 was the largest twin-engine aircraft in the world, and the largest and heaviest twin-engine aircraft to see service in World War II.

It is a scene of squalor and desolation in a town that makes revenue from the day-tripper holiday market. Since Victorian times, many Londoners have traditionally come to this south-east coast on the Thames Estuary, close to the capital. Towns like this have seen a marked decline since the advent of the package tourism in favour of exotic beaches in Spain.

In 1887, sugar-boiling factory owner Ben Bullock bought some plain stick candy band had the idea of putting ‘Blackpool Rock’ through the centre of the rock. Now a major industry in the holiday season in Britain and many seaside towns have their versions with their own names running through the rock. Modern seaside rock is thicker, about 1 inch, and more solid than the original form. Its sugar content is nowadays a reason not to buy as much, the adverse effects on teeth from sugar and colouring by the confectionary industry being a main reason for its decline.

Its revival happened when local entrepreneurs re-opened the business and it now enjoys a reputation for some of the best urban swims in the UK.

In the 1950s, Bamforth postcards were among the most popular of the 18 million items purchased at British resorts.

  • At the famous Butlins holiday camp in the Somerset town of Minehead, a poolside lifeguard overlooks the main  pool from an overhead bridge. Behind him a monorail transports holidaymakers around the resort. Wearing the large letter B for Butlins on his red vest, the young lad sucks on his whistle held between his lips and prominently, the words 'Made in England' have been tattooed on his left shoulder - as if a statement for his patriotic ideals but also for those of Butlins - an institution for the British working classes who after the war had the opportunity to spend their summers at special resorts in seaside towns that provided entertainment and fun. Built around 1805 to house a Cornish pumping engine which kept the network of lead mines operating underneath from flooding. The North Pennines is known for its deposits of lead ore etc., a large part of the area's economy. In the 1840s an enormous steam engine was installed in an attempt to keep the mines dry enough to work. Following decommissioning, the engine house was converted to a series of flats for mining families. It was finally abandoned around 100 years ago and has been derelict ever since. The Engine House is a dramatic reminder of a once thriving lead mining community of 170 people. The population declined after the mid-1800s when cheaper lead began to be imported from abroad, and young Shildon families emigrated to the goldmining areas of Australia and America.

Stretched across a bridge near the Riverbank Arena where the Hockey games are played, the British Olympic organisation (LOCOG) hope that as the tally for gold medals climbed, British youth will be inspired enough to take up sport when declining spending and interest has been a national issue. In times of austerity, schools and sports clubs had their budgets for sport reduced and Team GB's success raised more concerns for the future of British youth as potential medal winners.

  • Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher is seen dancing with a Tory Party official during the 1990 Conservative Party conference in Blackpool. Thatcher is wearing a favourite black and red ball gown and is the centre of attention for delegates and media. She is seen with Joy, Babs and Teddie - otherwise known as the Beverly Sisters entertainers, the  longest surviving vocal group of all time without a change in the line up. The sisters kick their legs up in the air dancing the Charleston (though not in unison) but Mrs Thatcher in her long dress declines and merely stands straight-legged. They are on the dance floor and Tory party officials are enjoying the moment as their PM relishes the moment.
