  • A young family walk gloomily past property Sold signs in a street at Grays, Essex England. Passing the prominent signs that bear the name of Quirk Deakin, a local estate agent in the industrial towns of south Essex and the Thames Gateway, is the location for dramatic increases of new housing developments. Both the parents and their daughter look depressed in this time of economic recession, when families are having their homes repossessed after defaulting on mortgage repayments. It is a bright summer day in Grays, east of the capital, just outside of the M25 orbital motorway and on the Thames river.

  • A man stands on his own on a grassy bank to cut a lonely figure in long grass on an embankment near the tall Canary Wharf tower structure a mile away in the background at Dockland's area of East London. Above the grassy bank at Mudchute, a city farm on London's Isle of Dogs, England, the sky is threatening with gathering clouds but lights still picks out the man against the darkening skyline. He stands with arms folded looking thoughtfully at the ground as if depressed or considering his isolation in the world. It is a seemingly rural location but is, in fact, an area of inner-city London, close to major construction projects, transforming Docklands into a major centre for finance and new housing.

  • Despite a gloriously bright summer afternoon, we see a depressing corner of Southend-on-Sea's Adventure Island. A young couple sits on some white towels in front of a wall that is adorned with graffiti and has its paint rubbed away. It is a scene of squalor and desolation in a town that makes revenue from the day-tripper holiday market. Since Victorian times, many Londoners have traditionally come to this south-east coast on the Thames Estuary, close to the capital. Towns like this have seen a marked decline since the advent of the package tourism in favour of exotic beaches in Spain.

  • Children play near a puddle in the town of Nova Huta. In filthy industrial streets, the kids look undernourished in this scene of impoverished, Communist dereliction. It is horribly depressing and unhealthy place to grow up and these children are pale and yet seem happy, with smiles on their faces. The famous steel works can be seen reflected in the puddle before them. After the war, Stalin decided to build an industrial Communist fantasy just outside Krakow: a model town and immense steelworks of the future. The steelworks was named after Lenin and the town would be called Nowa Huta - or, the new steel mill. At its peak, 27,000 people worked at the Lenin Steelworks. But Solidarity grew strong forcing strikes over pay and recognition over their union. Today, it is an economic and ecological disaster area..

  • A lone Tornado jet fighter arcs across a typically overcast sky at Southend-on-Sea on a Bank Holiday Sunday. Well-defined figures of children and adults either play nonchalantly on the beach at low tide, or watch in awe as the aircraft thunders over the Thames Estuary mud. A few stranded yachts stand upright in the low water and a groyne stretches out to sea towards the Kent coast, seen in the distance. It is a bleak and depressingly empty scene and the jet is merely a dot in the grey English sky, traditionally familiar summer weather. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903. .

  • Children play in a desolate street in the town of Nova Huta. Amid the filthy walls of their tenement building home and of the grim, car less street beyond, two older children play in their doorway while younger friends peer from around a corner. It is horribly depressing and unhealthy place to grow up and these children are pale and yet seem happy, with smiles on their faces. The famous steel works can be seen st the end of the street. After the war, Stalin decided to build an ideological communist fantasy just outside Krakow: a model town and immense steelworks of the future. The steelworks was named after Lenin and the town would be called Nova Huta. At its peak, 27,000 people worked at the Lenin Steelworks. • It is 10.15 in the morning and a mother and her daughter have crossed a road in Ruda Slaska, Poland, while an older lady has paused on the zebra crossing. It is a dark and gloomy day in this heavily polluted, industrial town in southern Poland. The local employer is the Huta Pokoj SA steel mill that dominates the landscape, rising as a filthy tower that makes the air quality so poor that respiratory deceases are common, with soot present in the atmosphere for children to breathe. The environmental impact of 1990s post-Stalinist Polish heavy industry is evident. The day is damp, depressing and unhealthy with a truck's headlights on as pedestrians stand on the roadside, wait at the bus stop or cycle past on the pavement.

  • Beneath an ugly breeze block concrete wall, a couple are enjoying their holiday in the English seaside town of Paignton, Devon. Sitting in striped deckchairs they are both curiously touching their own genital areas between their legs, perhaps both scratching an itch. The lady in sunglasses wearing a floral dress on the left looks guilty while her topless male partner appears more amused by the interruption. In this depressing corner of Paignton, also called the English Riviera, the grey construction behind them is a grim reminder of what it is often like to holiday in one's own home country where few exotic luxuries are found. Such squalor is unfortunately common around the UK and a reason why people take their vacations abroad. Even the grass below them is bare with weeds growing and soil at the foot of the wall.

  • Sitting on garden seats, a seaside couple enjoy ice creams near broken building materials in the resort of Sandown. A decaying pile of rubble and building bricks have been left on the ground where visitors and tourists sit on their holiday making for a grim and depressing experience and dystopic landscape. This is the seaside resort of Sandown on the Isle of Wight, twinned (jumelée in French) with the town of Tonnay-Charente, in the western French département of Charente-Maritime. Its American twin town is St. Pete Beach, Florida.

  • The message in graffiti lettering "Don't come here they attack you" has been written on a wall outside a house in the Toxteth area of Liverpool, Merseyside England. Flat 1A has a bright red-painted door and red bricks in an otherwise poverty-stricken district of this poor inner-city where crime and social deprivation has become the normal way of life for Scouses (someone from Liverpool). We see the red theme carried throughout this image of threat and ill-discipline where survival is clearly hard. These 'back to back' terraced houses have largely been demolished during Liverpool's regeneration during the 60s and 70s though some remain, accommodating unfortunate families on low-income.

The industrial action against the local authority was a health problem for Liverpool during the summer of '91 when streets filled with rubbish. Vermin like rats ran around and public city parks filled with every kind of refuse and garbage. Few of these back-to-backs now exist after being cleared to allow construction of high-rise tower-blocks and flats.

  • Surrounded by black bin-bags during the Merseyside dustmans' strike of 1991, two young "Scouse' girls lean against a brick wall in a rear alleyway between poor terraced housing in Liverpool, England. There is an older, taller white teenage girl with blonde hair dressed in a blue shell-suit and a shorter and younger friend of Asian-descent. Looking suspicious and amused at something across the cobbled alley of these 'back to back' houses in a poor area, South of the city centre, home to deprived families. • Two young 'Scouse' girls sit on a telephone junction box and against a brick wall on which there is graffiti and childish scribbles. They are near a back alleyway between poor terraced housing in Liverpool, England. The older, taller girl is of Asian-descent and the younger is White British who hides her face with her top. Both are facing other activity in this inner-city street where there are 'back to back' houses in a poor area, South of the city centre and home to deprived families. Few of these back-to-backs exist after being cleared to allow construction of high-rise tower-blocks and flats.

  • A lady protects herself from a mid-day summer summer sun with a brightly coloured parasol brolley. Oblivious to the viewer, she balances her lunch snack on her lap with toes pointing inwards, exposed to the hot solar rays. Meanwhile, she holds on tight to her eager pet poodle dog who is straining on its leash, wanting to go for a walk along the largely unpopulated promenade in this Devon resort, otherwise known as the English Riviera. But splashes of white paint (from the painted beach huts) have been left on the pavement. It is a horrible place to sit in the sun and her partner has left her alone to sit on her sun lounger, leaving the second chair vacant.

  • A makeshift warning sign made from plywood is roughly painted with letters declaring 'oil on beach.' It hangs on some silver railings on an unknown beach in England. The sand is strewn with sharp stones and litter and coloured (colored) a dirty brown stain high up on the shore line and more worrying, a little more distant, a father cuddles his baby child on a towel surrounded by possessions such as a cool box and the seaside toys of a happy family holiday (vacation). We look down on to this scene in disbelief that a parent lies down on such polluted terrain when health and safety considerations might have closed the entire esplanade.

  • Ten weeks after the UK went into Coronavirus pandemic lockdown, the Office for National Statistics reveal that the total death toll has passed 50,000 covid-19 victims, clothing mannequins in the shop window of a retailer undergoing extensive refurbishment, are covered in a protective layer of plastic, in the City of London, the capital's financial district, on 2nd June 2020, in London, England. The retail industry has taken advantage of quiet roads during lockdown, as an opportunity to have repairs and refurbs caried out in their premises.
