  • "Crooked Lady." A twelve month-old girl who has recently learned to walk proudly strides past an elderly lady with balancing arms outstretched while at the Dulwich Show in South London. There is a marked difference between the youthful, upright posture of the young girl to the hunched and bent stance of the old woman who stands supporting herself on a brolley. It is a picture that compares youth with old age, the delight that a person of later years shows to a child whose life reaches far ahead. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • A two and half year-old girl has a mid-afternoon sleep on the sofa of her parents' home in South London. On the floor is her young baby brother who is also enjoying some rest in his carrying basket. Both are unconscious but getting welcome shut-eye from the morning's activities. Both children face each other during deep sleep and we see the different sizes of their small hands. From a personal documentary project entitled "Next of Kin" about the photographer's two children's early years spent in parallel universes. Model released.

  • An elderly homeless man walks slowly past a Barclays Bank cash dispenser at which business people are either queueing or typing in their PIN numbers from cash accounts, or simply passing-by. One middle-aged gent stands eyeing the poor man suspiciously while other men of wealth, prospects and prosperity are tall and stand erect in smart suits and polished shoes, the homeless man is hunched and dishevelled, carrying a supermarket bag - perhaps containing all of his worldly goods. It is a tragic scene of extremes between the haves and the have-nots; the rich and poor; between people with hope and those in despair. This is the City of London, near Fenchurch Street Station where the UK's insurance companies are based and it is impossible to know if any of these men in smart clothes are the same age as the poor man.

  • A hunched, homeless elderly man walks along Fenchurch Street in the City of London while younger and affluent office workers saunter past, smiling and with a care in the world. It is a scene of social class division, the contrasts between wealth and poverty, have and have nots, prospects and no hope for the future and of old age and youth. The old man carries a plastic bag with all his belongings and the workers carry their lunch in a paper bag. They are not only smart and he dishevelled but they stand tall and he is stooped, further proof of the hard, demanding life he leads on the capital's streets.

  • Seen from a low angle, we see a big sister turning around to see what her younger brother is up to as they sit back-to-back in a park in London, England. The boy is actually playing with the girl's toy windmill, turning its sails proving a fun way of passing part of a summer's afternoon in this inner-city park. His sister is unimpressed however and she is about to snatch her own property back - not because she needs it, but simply because it is hers. These siblings are having to learn sharing each other's things and as a five and three year-old are finding out, it's a hard lesson. • A four year-old girl plays some sort of religious role-play game - perhaps an angel or the Virgin Mary - but what do see is her age of innocence as she wears an NHS blanket like a shawl over her head and draped over her arms like a Christian icon. Next to her is her 18 month-old baby brother who has learned to drink his warm milk from a plastic bottle, recently coming to like both breast and formula milk. Together they look at something that is interesting out of frame. The viewer looks up at the two siblings from a low angle to see them tall against the corniced ceiling of their South London home. It is bright from window light that shines down on the floor of their South London home where the two siblings play. • As a young office worker sleeps incongruously on a marble pavement, a street sweeper nearby brushes away litter with a small dustpan. The manual labourer wears blue overalls, yellow gloves and keys in his back pocket while the man in a wastecoat and smart trousers and polished slip-on shoes appears to be fast asleep, his fingers across his chest. This scene suggests the social divisions of the working man: Of the young, educated post-war generation whose opportunities have afforded them a faster lifestyle, far removed from that of the physically-demanding job of a man whose life has been spent cleaning and sweeping. English social differences is clearly represented here as the harshness of the manual labourer versus a lazy youth of today, seen in the middle of the modern city.

  • On the corner of Draycott Place SW1 and Cardogan Gardens SW3 is Stuart House, a red brick property boasting clipped vegetation set in a brick window recess that suggests that at one time, a window was removed and filled in with more brick - its mortar and pointing is a different spacing. Strong spring sunshine is almost overhead making hard shadows on the recess and on the well-painted black gloss paintwork on the railings. Stuart House was constructed in 1880. It is a large red-brick detached house in the 'Queen Anne' style. Cadogan Gardens SW3, is an 1890s development between the King's Road and Sloane Street.

  • Whilst one spectator cranes her neck skyward, another is oblivious to an air show spectacle above their heads. One looks up into the sun, shielding her eyes with a hand and outstretched fingers but the other concentrates on lighting her cigarette with a match. Unseen in this picture, the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, are performing high in the blue skies above the public on West Greensward, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex. In front of the seaside town's brightly coloured red and yellow Lifeguard Station, the two ladies have different interests in the aerobatic manoeuvres. The Red Arrows' 25-minute display either captivates some or bores others although they can be seen upwards of 90-plus shows and fly-pasts each year in front of several millions live or on TV. They have flown over 4,000 shows in 52 countries.

This is Lombard Street, originally a piece of land granted by King Edward I to goldsmiths from the part of northern Italy known as Lombardy (larger than the modern region of Lombardy). It is a narrow and usually dark sidestreet near the Bank of England in the heart of what is called the Square Mile - the inner-part and oldest quarter of London occupied first by the Romans 2,000 years ago. Nowadays the City of London is home to banks and financial institutions but also with a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000.

  • Hopton's Alms Houses, London SE1. Hopton's Almshouses were built in 1752 by trustees appointed under the will of Charles Hopton. 26 poor persons were chosen to occupy the houses. Almsmen were allowed to marry but the original rules were framed to prevent children of the almsmen becoming chargeable to Christ Church parish. Each almsman was to receive a chaldron of coals and a payment of not less than £6 a year. The almshouses consist of a continuous range of two-storey cottages on three sides of the central lawn with trees and paved paths.
