Scottish merchant Robert Milligan (1746 - 1809) grew up on his family's sugar plantation in Jamaica and by the time of his death, owned 526 slaves of his own. Because of the theft of his sugar and rum cargoes from the docks of the day, he and other busnessmen built the massive West India Docks trade hub, him becoming Deputy Chairman of the West India Dock Company. In the aftermath of the George Floyd protests in the US and UK Black Lives Matter groups, who are calling for the removal of statues and street names with links to the slave trade, Milligan's and other statues of British slavery owners and profiteers, have become a focus of impassioned protest.

  • As darkness approaches, a queue of campervans and other vehicles queue up at the first checkpoint in the Port of Dover's Eastern Docks, the holidaymakers' first step to travelling across the English Channel to France or Belgium. beneath the famous white cliffs of Dover, that symbol of England's edge that is seen from the sea as one leaves or approaches the English shores. It is dusk and the flood lights have started illuminating the busy port roads and ramps, the red rear tail lights from a truck cross the picture's foreground and the signs - with graphics of busses, cars  and arrows that tell drivers in which lane to line-up glow yellow. Dover has long been one of the World's premier seaports, with centuries of maritime heritage, presented with a Royal Charter in 1606.

At launch there were 315 bicycle docking stations and 5,000 bicycles available in central London. The scheme is also informally called the Boris Bike scheme after mayor Boris Johnson, who was in office at the time the scheme opened to the public. The project initially covered about 17 square miles (44 square kilometres) of central London - roughly the same area as the 'Zone 1' Travelcard area (covering the whole of the City of London and parts of eight London boroughs)[5]  and will cost an estimated £140 million (more than £20,000 per available bike) over six years. It is expected to pay for itself over time.[6] Barclays' contribution is £25 million.[The bicycles and the docking stations are built in Canada and are based on Bixi, Montreal's bicycle rental system. Fitzrovia, Wells Street docking station being installed. Over 500,000 bicycle trips were made within the first six weeks of the launch of the scheme.

  • The fishing fleet of Tarbert on Scotland's Mull of Kintyre lies moored at the dock of this pretty coastal village in the Western Isles. Their colourful hulls shine in late afternoon sunshine as they are tied up awaiting another outing at sea to provide for this small fishing community a living and a livelihood for its families. But in the foreground sit a young couple whose prospects are not so positive: they rest on a bench in silhouette, one smoking a cigarette while turned to the friend who stares out to distant rolling hills. It is a scene of hopelessness that reflects modern life for the youth in remote communities where jobs are scarce and their futures far from secure. In an otherwise idyllic Scottish landscape, we guess at the disintegration of society up here - the scourge of economic downturn and future social problems.

She was the 83rd such vessel since the restoration of King Charles II in 1660. She is the second Royal yacht to bear the name, the first being the famous racing cutter built for The Prince of Wales in 1893. Following Labour's victory on 1 May 1997 it was announced that the vessel would be retired and no replacement would be built.   • As winter fog lifts, the waters of the River Thames clear to reveal an eerie landscape of river life and industrial architecture at Gravesend, Kent England. It is late-morning and in the hazy distance tall old cranes that once lifted cargo from the holds of ships - before the development of containerization - rise from the waters on the south bank opposte the new Tilbury Docks. On its surface, a seagull dips to catch a fish. Historically, the Thames has long been a route for shipping that kept the capital supplied and although the docks have seen huge decreases in traffic and volume since the second world war, Tilbury Docks (Europe's only specialist short-sea terminal, handling 120,000 containers each year.) remain a busy hub for containerized vessels arrivng from all over the world.
