  • A seller of flowers stands looking down a street in the Polish capital, Warsaw. Holding a single bouquet, the elderly man has located himself on the corner of Zapiecek Street (Zapiecek means place behind the stove) awaiting a buyer. With his hand on one hip, he has laid more yellow and red flowers that he has probably grown himself and is trying to make a meagre living from. But there are few people on this street this early in the oldest part of Warsaw and the walls appear to be damp, with discoloured plaster after decades of decay under a Communist government. Old paving slabs on the pavement and a cobbled road give a sense of history and wartime destruction for these streets saw many atrocities during the German occupation in WW2. This is a scene of pessimism and poverty yet with a small degree of hope in the fresh flowers.

  • Meat porters drag old carts laden with freshly-butchered meat in Smithfield market. One man's coat reveals blood stains and one calls to the other as they walk. Meat has been bought and sold at Smithfield for over 800 years, making it one of the oldest markets in London. A livestock market occupied the site as early as the 10th century. Approximately 120,000 tons of produce pass through the market each year. As well as meat and poultry, products such as cheese, pies, and other delicatessen goods are available. Buyers including butchers, restaurateurs and caterers are able see the goods for themselves and drive away with what they have bought. Bargaining between buyers and sellers at Smithfield sets the guidelines for meat and poultry prices throughout the UK.

  • With his body in shade and only his head in the sun, a Portuguese man stands in the street of central Lisbon to read the headlines of national and provincial newspapers which are pinned by their top right corners for passers-by to glance at or buy. Lit by early morning sun, the daily or weekly periodicals are set in a neat row for the benefit of this man and other citizens of the Portuguese capital. Ornate square tile mosaics are set in the pavement (sidewalk) in a design style that Lisbon is well-known for. In an age of mass-communications, reading one's media on paper in such a manner already seems old fashioned.

  • It is 07.45 on a dark, wintry morning and from behind, we follow a lone commuter who walks along a snow-covered path in Ruskin Park, an otherwise green space in the south London borough of Herne Hill, Lambeth. Street lights are still illuminating the road in the background and the blue light of early morning has fast becoming another day of snow showers and chilly temperatures. No grit or salt has been sprinkled on this slippery path and the person walks carefully carrying an umbrella from falling sleet which is soon to turn to rain as the temperature rises. Tall 100 year-old mature ash trees whose trunks form an avenue of cover and the commuter proceeds towards their neighbours to the station beyond. A single 4x4 car makes its way through this still quiet street with lights blazing.

  • Individual trays for airline baggage in the Early Bags Store where 4,000 pieces are held. 50-70,000 pieces of British Airways baggage a day travel through 11 miles of conveyor belts which were installed in a 5-storey underground hall beneath the 400m (a quarter of a mile) length of Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport. Here we see items of luggage spending 4 hours in transit, held in a fully-automated parking lot for bags. Computers decide when to fish the item out and re-introduce it into the system and load it on to the appropriate aircraft. T5 alone has the capacity to serve around 30 million passengers a year and was completed in 2008 at a cost of £4.3bn. The system was designed by an integrated team from the airport operator BAA, BA and Vanderlande Industries of the Netherlands, and handles both intra-terminal and inter-terminal luggage.
