  • Blue paper, glue remnants and Damp stains on a card business window in an East Grinstead street in Sussex, a victim of the UK recession. Around a recession-bled Britain, high-street businesses have been going bust in their thousands. Britain has now endured eight recessions since the Second World War. No two recessions are alike, and that applies to the current slowdown also. It has been caused by a shock to the availability of credit, a massive build up of debt. The number of people out of work currently stands at almost two million. Given the rate at which the economy is deteriorating this could easily be above three million. From a continuing piece of work about windows and urban messages, the picture is from the project of closed business windows: 'Bust - the Art of Recession'.

  • Four water-logged deckchairs have been abandoned on a wet Brighton's East Pier in East Sussex. It is Spring but the rain has driven away holidaymakers from this desolate and depressing spot from England's South coast seaside resort. We see a gloomy, grey sky and empty horizon with neither people, nor water activity but the stripes of the railings are echoed in the reflective wooden planks on this Victorian-era pier and of the fabric on the deckchairs. We wonder who might have sat on these chairs and where they might be now? This landscape might be the antithesis of a holiday poster that repels rather than attracts tourists to this location.

  • Villagers try to push a stranded car through flood water on the outskirts of Chichester. Heaving on the front bonnet, the people try to rescue the vehicle from rising waters on the outskirts of town. The car has been overcome in a metre of flood water and unable to start on its own. Lavant is a village just north of the city of Chichester. It is made up of two parts, Mid Lavant and East Lavant, and takes its name from the River Lavant which flows from East Dean. This area has been prone to flooding for several years and houses around the rising rivers can be blighted with insurance companies refusing future cover.

  • A competitor in the annual Birdman of Bognor event stands on the pier floor boards at Bognor Regis, East Sussex, England. English eccentrics gather annually at the southern seaside town to jump from the pier into the chilly waters of the English Channel. Fun jumpers ?wearing? their aeroplane suits compete for a £25,000 prize for the one to fly 100 metres from the pier platform ? a record not yet achieved. Entrants (who often jump for charity rather than any aeronautical pretensions) include sugar plum fairies, condoms, Ninja Turtles and vampires. The winner was a hang-glider pilot reaching 26 metres but here, a Spitfire pilot sponsored by a milk company eventually dropped vertically. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903. .

  • A class of schoolboys accompanied by their teachers play on the shingle at the water's edge in the south coast seaside town of Brighton. The East Pier is resplendent with amusement rides and attractions that populate its long structure, jutting out into the calm English Channel beyond which is the French coast further south. The children are still in their school shirts, shorts and ties but have taken off their shoes and socks to frolic and enjoy some precious fresh-air and the freedom that childhood brings. According to British legal requirements, schoolchildren on away day visits must have accompanying adults with a ratio of 1:xx though it appears this group's quota is less with two teachers per 28 boys.

  • A couple of mixed-race have put their heads through the apertures made in a painting that depicts Prince Albert and Queen Victoria, on the Palace Pier at Brighton, on the south coast of England. The faces peep through this traditional attraction that few can resist, even in the 21st century. The man's face looks disturbingly incongruous in the place where the Prince Consort's white German character would be. There is a message here of a changing multi-cultural British society where these friends or partners are from other ethnic backgrounds and where mixed-marriages are now commonplace, as opposed to the Victorian era when attitudes to racism and race-relations were vastly different.

  • Seen from a low angle inside their open-top classic American car, two openly gay men cuddle up close to look into each other's eyes while holding their favourite cans of Websters Yorkshire bitter (beer). They are attending a classic car rally in Brighton during a Gay Pride festival, that this English seaside town regularly hosts during the hot south coast summers. The large 60s steering wheel is seen in the foreground and the vehicle's leather seat looks shiny clean against the bright light. There is a classic car magazine resting on one man's knee and they are clearly mad about this era of motor transportation.

  • Schoolboys get dressed after an afternoon off from classes, spent next to the western Palace Pier at the seaside town of Brighton. Pulling on socks is a young lad from a nearby school whose uniform is a red blazer and striped tie. With their clothing of their friends still lie on the shngle, their afternoon of play day is coming to an end. In the background is the western Palace Pier, a major landmark on this south coast resort. Ofsted's guidelines are that for children of 9-12, a ratio of one adult to 8 young people is a requirement.

  • An engineer polishes a Thomas the Tank Engine locomotive whilst in sidings on the Bluebell Railway at Kingscote, England. The Bluebell Railway is a heritage line running for nine miles along the border between East and West Sussex, England. Steam trains are operated between Sheffield Park and Kingscote, with an intermediate station at Horsted Keynes. The railway is managed and run largely by volunteers. It has the largest collection (over 30) of steam locomotives in the UK, the first preserved standard gauge steam-operated passenger railway in the world to operate a public service, running its first train on 7 August 1960.

As part of their learning experience as blind (or near-blind) children as well as the extra therapy of heightening their touch sensensation..The Barn Owl (Tyto alba) is the most widely distributed species of owl, and one of the most widespread of all birds. It is also referred to as Common Barn Owl, to distinguish it from other species in the barn-owl family Tytonidae. These form one of two main lineages of living owls, the other being the typical owls (Strigidae). Robertson was born in 1930 and worked under editor (Sir) Tom Hopkinson on the prominent photojournalistic magazine published in the United Kingdom from 1938 to 1957. It is considered a pioneering example of photojournalism and was an immediate success, selling 1,600,000 copies a week after only six months. It has been called the Life magazine of the United Kingdom. Grace is married to Thurston Hopkins, another esteemed photojournalist from the days of classic magazine photo-reportage.
