  • As stormy waves crash over its super-structure and funnel, the Liberian-registered MV Braer oil tanker spills 84,700 tonnes of crude oil into the North Sea. It sits below its water-line with crude oil leaking from its ruptured tanks after running ground in hurricane force winds, beeching itself on these rocks in Quendale Bay, west of Sunburgh Head, the Shetland Islands, Scotland. In fast-fading light, this ecological disaster occured in a beautiful region of Great Britain affecting much native wildlife although the Gulfaks oil the Braer was carrying is lighter therefore more biodegradable and able to disperse better than other North Sea crude. ..

  • A customized caravan sits in the damp woods at the Faslane Peace Camp, Argyll and Bute, Scotland. Matt Bury, 52, is one of the camp's 10 full time residents and has been living in this trailer for a year. Painted harlequin-styled diamonds adorn the walls of the van in a personal artistic statement. Calor gas bottles lie on the ground and weeds grow around this semi-permanent site. Faslane Peace Camp is a makeshift political activists' site alongside HM Naval Base Clyde where Trident nuclear deterrent missiles and Vanhuard Class submarines dock.   • David Reynolds (aka Eco) is a long-term activist, campaigner in the peace movement and resident of the Faslane Peace Camp, Scotland. His home of three years is called the Earth Shack and is largely re-cycled from scrap and garbage found locally on rubbish tips. Eco leans against his garden fence holding a mug of coffee this chilly Sunday morning. Signs of his political beliefs adorn the place: CND logos and Peace on Earth statements. His mother was a ?Carnie? (after the word Carnival, someone working on the fairgrounds) so perhaps it?s from her that he more enjoys an alternative outdoor camping lifestyle after a few years in the army. Faslane Peace Camp is a makeshift site alongside Faslane Naval base where Trident nuclear deterrent missiles and submarines dock. The camp has been occupied continuously, in a few different locations, since 1982.

  • As an early sun rises, the twin stacks of Richborough cooling Towers make silhouettes against the golden morning light. Now decommissioned, these industrial giants of the landscape are sending clouds of steam vapour into the air, in the county of Kent. Nature can be seen competing with 20th Century technology as solar energy is seen against the war power being generated. From 1962-1971 Richborough burned coal from collieries. In 1971 the station was converted to burn oil. Too costly to run plant underwent trials on an experimental fuel called Orimulsion, a cheap heavy oil and water-based emulsion produced form natural bitumen from Venezuela. Initial results or trials suggested it would make a cheap clean fuel alternative to oil but high sulphur emissions from the plant caused nearby Acid Rain and after local protest, the site has since been derelict.
