  • With a grimace on her pained face, a female Officer Cadet at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst splashes through a water obstacle during an endurance race. Recruits are running a 5 mile steeplechase around the Academy grounds to assess individual stamina and accumulate team points. Sandhurst is an institution which has bred staff officers since 1800. Today it trains future officers for the demands of leadership and military understanding of military understanding. Students are tested for their command instincts, intellect, strength of character and physical endurance often under great psychological pressure - the demands asked of them in modern warfare. Failure in this test might not necessarily mean dismissal though perseverance or refusal to give up won't harm their prospects.

  • Guitarist Rick Parfitt of the British rock and roll band Status Quo bows his head while playing his electric instrument on stage at l'Aeronef in Lille, France during their 2007 European Tour. His shoulder-length blonde hair tumbles over his face as he bends forward towards the audience, exhausted nearing the end of the 90-minute show. Parfitt and Francis Rossi are the two original members of the band, having met as school boys in the early 60s. Their distinctive three-chord guitar riff has made them a household name with hits like: Rockin' All Over the World and Sweet Caroline; selling 118 million albums. Over their 40 years of performing, QUO have played over 6000 live shows to an audience of 25 million people and travelling four million miles and spent 23 years away from home.

  • The Mile End Road leading up to the City of London with the Natwest tower on the horizon. The evening exodus is underway, the rush-hour for commuters and car drivers who head east and west along this old road to and from the City of London, through the poorer east end to the wealth and prosperity of the financial district. Light trails from the vehicles's headlights and tail lights register during a time exposure and the pink city skies to the west glow above the tall office complexes on the skyline.

  • Just after heavy rain when the streets of London's West End are wet but brightening after the clouds have passed we look into the windows of a black taxi cab on the busy Charing Cross Road. It is a scene of urban transport and inclement weather. We can see the rough form of the taxi driver at the front of his vehicle but it appears that he is stationary, possibly awaiting for the return of his fare-paying passenger from nearby bookshops such as Foyles in the background. A No-Smoking sticker is on the window and advertising on the side panel shows the arms of an airline passenger sitting in an airliner seat but once the taxi passenger returns, their head will be directly above this. The car's roof is still wet from rain, glistening in the artificial street lights that have turned on during the dark rain storm.

  • As traffic zooms past, the art installation called 'House' stands alone on a now-empty and house-less East London street, on 2nd December 1993, in London, England. The contours of the structure have been inverted to reveal an inside-out version of the original building. It is a concrete cast of the inside of an entire Victorian terraced house completed in autumn 1993 and exhibited at the location of the original property -- 193 Grove Road -- in East London (all the houses in the street had earlier been knocked down by the council). Created by the artist Rachel Whiteread CBE (born 1963) this is her best-known sculpture. It won her the Turner Prize (the first woman to do so) for best young British artist in 1993 before being controversially demolished by the council in January 1994.

  • Deep in the West Sussex countryside are a group of Territorial Army soldiers. They have stopped in a remote lane to consult their Ordnance Survey maps during a day of learning to navigate with maps and compasses. Over a weekend learn the skills needed to be part-time army volunteers known as the TA and have far to go. Together they look at maps and argue where they should go next. Looking on with mild amusement is their senior officer who accompanies them to assess their leadership skills and initiative. Behind them a road sign tells them the road ahead is a dead end to traffic. It is a very English summer landscape of lush green vegetation and grasses. The TA work as part of Britain's reserve land forces. Together with the Regular Army they provide support at home and overseas including Iraq and Afghanistan. .

Designed and built at the end of the Art-Nouveau period, Michelin House at 81 Fulham Road, Chelsea, London, was constructed as the first permanent UK headquarters and tyre depot for the Michelin Tyre Company Ltd. The building opened for business on 20 January 1911.

  • An artist is incongruously enclosed in roadworks barriers at the busy junction of Piccadilly Circus in London's West End. Painting with an easel and applying careful brush strokes amid the noise and chaos of this busy traffic junction in the capital. A young man walks past barely noticing the artist as he strides through the heart of London's west end. But on the youth's t-shirt is a modern interpretation (wearing glasses and apparently spitting liquid into a cup) of Hans Memling's "Portrait of a Man with a Coin of the Emperor Nero (Bernardo Bembo)" German-born artist Jan van Mimnelinghe (Hans Memling, c. 1435-94) was well known all over Europe. During his lifetime, he painted commissions not only for the Burgundian Dukes, but also for patrons in Germany, Austria, Venice, Florence and London.

  • In light monsoonal rain, a lone pedestrian is seen from a high viewpoint, crossing a zebra crossing with a yellow grid box junction to his right in Central Hong Kong on the last day of British rule. The junction is empty and without any traffic but the word 'Look' is stencilled in white letters for the benefit of unwary pedestrians. An umbrella used by the unrecognisable person is a colour match with the painted striped road markings, identical to the British highway traffic code. The transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to the Peoples Republic of China (PRC), often referred to as "The Handover" occurred at midnight on June 30, 1997, signifying the end of British rule, and the transfer of legal and financial authority back to China. Hong Kong was once known as 'fragrant harbour' (or Heung Keung) because of the smell of transported sandal wood.

  • A young deer lies dead beside a busy highway on a road near Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Washington State. Very recently run-over but seemingly unharmed, this animal has head injuries and died immediately from a collision with a passing vehicle, such as this heavy articulated lorry which blurrs past this location. This is forested area and the deer's natural habitat but too often wildlife in its natural surroundings violently meets the modern human environment and the animal comes of worst. As a result of the death, the roadkill was taken by members of a US Air Force survival course at their nearby facility and so it formed an unscheduled extra lesson in preparing venison for the pot that night (see Corbis image entitled 'US Air Force survival instructors with recent roadkill').

  • A crushed scooter lies on the road after having been knocked over by a white delivery van in central London with a passing NHS ambulance in the capital's West End. The juxtaposed ambulance and bike are merely coincidental, the ambulance having just passed-by unconnected to the incident of which there was apparently no rider or victim. Still, the damage to the bike is severe with the weight of the vehicle pressing down on the small scooter whose owner is perhaps elsewhere, soon to discover the wreck of his/her bike.

  • On the eve of transfer of law in Hong Kong from the UK to China, construction workers in Central Hong Kong carry on their tasks during a monsoonal rain shower on the last day of British rule. Some are dressed in yellow waterproof coats and hard hats, we see a British-style sign warning drivers of Men at Work resembling a man holding an umbrella. Lastly, on the right another man on a wall, also holding an brolley. In the foreground a car park sign states that the space is full in red letters and a local authority sign saying "Working for a better environment" is written in Chinese and English lettering. • A shortened perspective view northwards up Bond Street in central London. With Christmas lights hanging down across the street, a blurred vehicle cross a road junction and a red London Routemaster bus approaches with lights on in this scene from 1994. Shoppers are filling the pavements either side of this retail area known for its expensive art, jewellery and couture. Bond Street is a major shopping street in the West End of London that runs north-south through Mayfair between Oxford Street and Piccadilly. It has been a fashionable shopping street since the 18th century and is currently the home of many high price fashion shops.

  • A Big Issue seller sits near a Christian Dior fashion House sponsored taxi in London's Bond Street during Vogue's Fashion's Night Out festival in the streets of the West End. But it is still early and passers-by pay more attention to the vehicle than the poor newspaper seller, traditionally a homeless person who earns cash from selling this charity magazine to members of the public. She sits strategically outside the Louis Vuitton shop where a different class of English society spend their wealth on couture and luxury items such as accessories and jewellery.

  • Traffic, cyclists and pedestrians fill this busy urban landscape in Oxford Street in London's west end. As the cars drive past allowing for the space needed for the bikes and their riders, shoppers walking on the pavement (sidewalk) make their way to see the shops and stores. We see the signage of McDonalds, Virgin and Sock Shop - all major brands in the early 1990s - plus Cannon cinemas. There is boxes litter in the gutter which the cyclists have to steer past and they pass-by.

  • This memorial has been placed where a young man called 'Clinton' died on the A1206 Manchester Road, London, England, UK. If we drove past this place where someone's life ended, the victim would just be an anonymous statistic but flowers are left to die too and touching poems and dedications are written by family and loved-ones. One reads: "Your body is soft, not like street, Clinton." From a project about makeshift shrines: Britons have long installed memorials in the landscape: Statues and monuments to war heroes, Princesses and the socially privileged. But nowadays we lay wreaths to those who die suddenly - ordinary folk killed as pedestrians, as drivers or by alcohol, all celebrated on our roadsides and in cities with simple, haunting roadside remembrances.

  • A woman police officer (WPC) stands with white paint plashed over her uniform during a public protest over the Poll Tax policies of Margaret Thatcher's government in 1990. It is dark and the trouble has been growing throughout the evening when the paint was thrown by unknown protesters. Angry crowds, demonstrating against Thatcher's local authority tax, eventually stormed the Whitehall area and then London's West End, setting fire to a construction site and cars, looting stores up Charing Cross Road and St Martin's Lane. The anti-poll tax rally in central London erupted into the worst riots seen in the city for a century. Forty-five police officers were among the 113 people injured as well as 20 police horses. 340 people were arrested.

He reached 8 ft 11.1 in (2.72 m)[2][3] in height and weighed 485 lb (220 kg) at his death at age 22. His great size and his continued growth in adulthood was due to hypertrophy of his pituitary gland which results in an abnormally high level of human growth hormone. He showed no indication of an end to his growth even at the time of his death.
