  • A portrait of a young man with a face painted with the English flag and the letters THFC (Tottenham Hotspur Football Club), a north London club, a effort he has made during an outdoor party celebrating the 50th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day on 6th May 1995, in London, England. In the week near the anniversary date of May 8, 1945, when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Germany and peace was announced to tumultuous crowds across European cities, the British still go out of their way to honour those sacrificed and the realisation that peace was once again achieved. Street parties now – as they did in 1945 – played a large part in the country’s patriotic well-being.

  • Holding drained pint beer glasses that symbolises an economic recession, City of London office workers gather to drink at lunchtime while dressed in red ties and white shirts, on the 23rd April, St George's Day, England's national day. In recent years, more English flags have become more prevalent in a resurgence of national pride and more citizens have come to work dressed with a red and white theme such as ties and shirts, hats or shoes. Anything for a little fun in such gloomy times. This anonymous trio have all agreed to dress identically and enjoy an early warm spell of good weather to show-off their dress sense and patriotism.

Reacting to an interview by an Arabic TV interviewer, a man shows the old Libyan flag now being paraded as an anti Gaddafi symbol. The flag of the independent kingdom was red, black, and green with a crescent and star in the centre. • A traditional band of Morris Men dance outside the ancient Christian church of St. Botolph's without Bishopsgate in the City of London on St George's Day. Wearing white uniforms they jig their traditional dance, a form of English folk dance accompanied by accordion and pipes. It is based on rhythmic stepping and the execution of choreographed figures by a group of dancers. Implements such as sticks, swords, and handkerchiefs may also be wielded by the dancers. In a small number of dances for one or two men, steps are performed near and across a pair of clay tobacco pipes laid across each other on the floor. English records of Morris dancing date back to 1448. The church may have survived the Great Fire of London unscathed, and only lost one window in the Second World War, but on 24 April 1993 was one of the many buildings to be damaged by an IRA bomb.

  • A detail of the Skull and Crossbones on the gates of St Nicholas Church, Deptford, London - thought to have been the inspiration for Captain Morgan's pirate flag. .This church is a short walk down from the ship yards on the Thames. The sailors would come here to pray before embarking on a new voyage. Some of their voyages were to plunder from any ship they found on the high seas. Since they could not fly the flag of their nationality they chose to fly the Skull and Crossbones flag of St. Nicholas, that way other Deptford ships would not attack them.

It is the Queens' Golden Jubilee celebrations in London's Hyde Park and this scene of patriotic fun is common when crowds gather to acknowledge their monarch's long reign over her people. The women's faces are obscured but there is a blurred face of an unknown singer leading a concert of rousing songs - perhaps Rule Britannia - that excites the crowd still in the semi-darkness. It is the end of a long day of marches and appearances of Her Majesty on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, marking her 50th year on the throne.

  • Britain's Union Jack flag flies in a breeze with British Parliament's Big Ben clock tower at the Palace of Westminster in the background. As a symbol of parliamentary power and a national democracy, the colours flutter in a breeze alongside the Thames River on the southern Lambeth bank side. The clock shows just after 1 in the afternoon. The Palace, also known as the Houses of Parliament or Westminster Palace, is where the two Houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom (the House of Lords and the House of Commons) conduct their business. It is therefore a potent symbol for British Governmental power, influence and a world-famous landmark for tourists. Big Ben is the name of the clock's bell and not the tower itself.

  • The British Union Jack Flag flies in a stiff breeze, its colours of red-white and blue almost wholly horizontal as the wind tears through the blue skies and beneath wispy cirrus clouds, in Eastbourne, West Sussex, England UK. Tied to its flag-pole, this symbol of patriotic nationalism, evokes a sense of pride and spirit the British are known for - having encouraged them through two world wars and more recently, other military campaigns. The colours (colors) of Scotland's blue and white crosses and the English cross of St. George are merged to make this well-known symbol of the British Isles.

  • Gathering outside their house in the East End of London, a family sits together to celebrate 50th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day on 6th May 1995. A man hangs out a Union Jack flag to accompany the Stars and Stripes on a washing line in the front garden. Street parties now - as they did in 1945 - played a large part in the country's patriotic well-being.

  • A lorry driver is handed his change after buying a burger at a fast food trailer in Grays, Essex England. The large man has parked his vehicle in a truck stop car park for an early evening food snack. The lady serving him works in an outside mobile burger bar that stands at this popular spot for working men as they pass-by this industrial corridor on the River Thames. Meanwhile, the serving woman's friend sits sunning himself and scratching his head beneath a film poster for the British comedy 'Run Fat Boy, Run' with actor Simon Pegg. Further in the distance, the English Cross of St George flutters and a line of electricity pylons take a transmission cables into central London, taking power into the capital.
