  • A tray of sardines fry on an outdoor grill in the Bairro Alto district - or Upper City - the oldest of Lisbon's residential quarters. We see in detail 16 fish (sardinhas assadas in Portuguese) all lying in the sunlight on their sides in neat, parralel rows with their clouded eyes staring up towards the viewer. They still have their silvery, scaley skin and Portuguese sardines are traditionally be served with finely-chopped potatoes, considered to be the sweetest and fattest sardines in the world. In Portugal, more than 60 percent of the national sardine catch is consumed fresh: 12 pounds a person, on average, compared to only 2 pounds of the fish canned. The sardine season - when the fish are plump and juicy - lasts from the end of May to the end of October, although the fat fish can keep coming until December. Lisbon's Bairro Alto quarter is located above Baixa and developed in the 16th Century. Suffering very little damage in the earthquake of 1755, it remains the area of most character and renowned for its residential and working quarter for craftsmen and shopkeepers. At night, life takes on a diferent personality when bars and up until the 60s, prostitution gave the district a bad reputation in the past but nowadays tourists and the chic frequent its streets and traditional 'Fado' (classical Portuguese opera) bars.  ..

Climbing on the top of the tank, the kids risk injury on the surface, with many sharp corners and places to fall from. In the week near the anniversary date of May 8, 1945, when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Germany and peace was announced to tumultuous crowds across European cities, the British still go out of their way to honour those sacrificed and the realisation that peace was once again achieved. Street parties now – as they did in 1945 – played a large part in the country’s patriotic well-being.

  • As traffic zooms past, the art installation called 'House' stands alone on a now-empty and house-less East London street. Oddly, the contours of the structure have been inverted to reveal an inside-out version of the original building. It is a concrete cast of the inside of an entire Victorian terraced house completed in autumn 1993 and exhibited at the location of the original property -- 193 Grove Road -- in East London (all the houses in the street had earlier been knocked down by the council). Created by the artist Rachel Whiteread CBE (born 1963) this is her best-known sculpture. It won her the Turner Prize (the first woman to do so) for best young British artist in 1993. Here we see 'House' next to a lamp post which throws down it's light on a winter evening, before it was controversially demolished by the council in January 1994.

Born in Leeds in 1944, Baxter was trained at the Leeds College of Art. His images, and their corresponding captions, fuse art and language inspired by pulp fiction and adventure comics with intellectual jokes and references. Baxter's art has been collected in numerous books, and his work has appeared in The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, and The Independent on Sunday. His simple line-drawings often feature cowboys, gangsters, explorers, and schoolchildren, who utter incongruous intellectual statements regarding art and philosophy.

The Berlin Wall was a barrier constructed by the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) starting on 13 August 1961, that completely cut off (by land) West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin. The Eastern Bloc claimed that the wall was erected to protect its population from fascist elements conspiring to prevent the "will of the people" in building a socialist state in East Germany. In practice, the Wall served to prevent the massive emigration and defection that marked Germany and the communist Eastern Bloc during the post-World War II period.

King Charles I amassed one of the most extraordinary art collections of his age, acquiring works by some of the finest artists of the past – Titian, Mantegna, Holbein, Dürer – and commissioning leading contemporary artists such as Van Dyck and Rubens. Following the his execution in 1649, the king's collection was sold off and scattered across Europe. Many works were retrieved during the Restoration, others now form the core of museums such as the Louvre and the Prado. This show reunites the greatest masterpieces of this magnificent collection for the first time.

  • The artist Rachel Whiteread CBE (born 1963) sits on the steps of her best-known sculpture called 'House'. 'House' stands alone on a now-empty and house-less East London street. Oddly, the contours of the structure have been inverted to reveal an inside-out version of the original building. It is a concrete cast of the inside of an entire Victorian terraced house completed in autumn 1993 and exhibited at the location of the original property -- 193 Grove Road -- in East London (all the houses in the street had earlier been knocked down by the council). It won Whiteread the Turner Prize (the first woman to do so) for best young British artist in 1993. Here we see 'House' at a close distance with graffiti painted on the walls stating the words "Wot for ..why not!" before it was controversially demolished by the council in January 1994.

  • ID papers for an anonymous secret agent from Cottbus, Germany, an exhibit in the ministerial headquarters of the Stasi secret police in Communist East Germany, the GDR. Built in 1960, the complex now known as the Stasi Museum. Between 1950 and 1989, the Stasi employed a total of 274,000 people in an effort to root out the class enemy. Before the fall of the Wall, it was a 22-hectare complex of espionage whose centrepiece is the office and working quarters of the former Minister of State Security, Erich Mielke who considered their role as the 'shield and sword of the party', conducting one of the world's most efficient spying operations against its political dissenters during its 40-year old socialist history. The Stasi Museum is a 22-hectare complex of research  and memorial centre concerning the political system of the former East Germany. During Hitler's Third Reich, the Gestapo had one agent for every 2,000 citizens whereas the Stasi had approximately an spy for every 6.5. Here at the Stasi HQ alone 15,000 were employed plus the many regional stations. German media called East Germany 'the most perfected surveillance state of all time' - administered from this complex of offices.

Removing the real grass from at the CFM stand (a company formed from SNECMA and General Electric jet engines) that manufactures a family of 7,200 commercial and military jet engines for Airbus and Boeing airliners. The men bend over to make a tight roll of organic lawn to keep it fresh and watered overnight before another hot day in this hall. Alongside them, a giant turbofan engine is seen, its huge turbine blades lit by artificial lights. The Paris Air Show is a commercial air show, organised by the French aerospace industry whose purpose is to demonstrate military and civilian aircraft to potential customers.
