With the help of a chaperone, the man points to a young girl in the hope she might be on his list. Neither speak each other's mother tongue and the language barrier is difficult to overcome. • Visitors inspect the row of childrens' graves in the churchyard of St James, Cooling, Kent. Charles Dickens wrote about these graves in the opening of his famous novel Great Expectations. Dickens lived nearby in Higham and referred to this row of children's tombstones now inevitably referred to as Pip's graves. Dickens pictures them as '....five little stone lozenges each about a foot and a half long which were arranged in a neat row ... and were sacred to the memory of five little brothers of mine....' In fact the Cooling graves belong to the children of two families, aged between 1 month and about a year and a half, who died in the late 18th and 19th centuries.

  • The village church of St James, Cooling, Kent. It dates from the late 13th century which is now maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust and open to visitors daily. In the churchyard are a group of children's gravestones which are widely considered to have inspired Charles Dickens' description of the churchyard in the opening scene of the novel Great Expectations. The tower was completed to the height at which it now stands by about 1400. St James' Church seems to have been little altered until the 19th century.

  • Peering through the steamy window of a Chinese restaurant in London's Chinatown district, we see the shapes and forms of kitchen staff and customers in this lively scene. In the window are rows of Peking Duck with their skins cooked a crispy dark brown. Meanwhile, surrounded by cooking utensils and implements, the tools of their trade, two chefs busy themselves in the kitchen area, one's face shows him to be ethnic Chinese who is rubbing his hands in a cloth before continuing his chores. Two European girls are waiting expectantly for their dishes to arrive. Obscured by the steam and heat, a waiter in green bustles about this small eaterie.

  • Taken from a tall apartment block, we see an aerial view overlooking the ex-Portuguese colony of Macau's Chinese Christian cemetery of San Miguel. The Cemiterio de São Miguel Arcanjo (Saint Miguel Catholic Cemetery) is located right in the middle of Macao island, on Estrada do Cemiterio and host the graves of the old Dutch and Portuguese colonials that helped shape Macau, now one of the world's most densely-populated city. We see a single Chinese lady walking along one of many criss-crossing diagonal pathways carrying a red bucket of water to tend these graves. She appears tiny compared to the multitude of plots, some which have crosses and others which have simple headstones. They are mostly neat and tidy but some have become overgrown with grass sprouting up. Macau's gambling revenue in 2006 weighed in at a massive £3.6bn - about £100m more than Las Vegas. The official languages are Portuguese and Chinese. The Macau Special Administrative Region is one of the two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China (PRC), along with Hong Kong. Administered by Portugal until 1999, it was the oldest European colony in China, dating back to the 16th century. The administrative power over Macau was transferred to the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1999, 2 years after Hong Kong's own handover. .

  • Fishermen from the Maldives haul aboard a yellow fin tuna to the deck of a dhoni boat in the Indian Ocean. The tuna has been swimming across the Indian Ocean non-stop since birth but after being dragged up with hooks, the 50kg fish will be clubbed to death by smashing its skull with repeated blows. Next it will be gutted efficiently with sharp knives and immediately plunged into ice containers to cool the flesh, reducing the risk of self-deteriorating flushed blood which renders it unfit for consumption under EU law (its live internal core temperature is 40 degrees centigrade). When as many fish have been caught before dark using hand and line method, rather than nets, the boat presses on to the processing factory at Himmafushi where they're filleted and boxed for export to Europe and in particular, for UK supermarkets like Sainsbury's.

  • While seated to have dinner at home, a young boy of about 10 years of age hides his face and wipes his lips with a serviette. Demonstrating perfect manners that his parents must have instilled in him, the lad's face is hidden from the viewer as he presses the cloth to his face to obscure his identity. He is eating some sort of pudding with a spoon and a fork rests on the highly-polished table on which an ornamental posy of flowers is reflected. It is a scene of immaculate etiquette that a boy from a middle-class background might be expected to show to elders and visitors. It is an example of grooming and pedigree to take with him out into the outside world where he will be expected to be the best behaved.
