  • A young man in his twenties parties in the evening at a Coates Wine Bar on London Wall in the heart of the City of London, England. Holding a small glass containing a shot of alcohol, he sings at the top of his voice during a Karaoke night. He wears a shirt and tie so probably works in an office. Without a care in the world he has closed his eyes to enjoy the moment of elation and alcohol. It's dark in the bar with few lights in the background but spotlights have little effect to brighten up the scene.

  • The British art historian John Gage (June 1938-Feb 2012) known for his books on Turner and the art of the Industrial revolution. John Gage, who has died aged 73, was an art historian whose incisive intelligence and deep commitment to exploring the significance of colour in painting made him one of the most original and important figures working in the field. His magisterial book on understandings of colour in western art, Colour and Culture: Practice and Meaning from Antiquity to Abstraction (1993), has become a standard work of reference. The fruit of the better part of a lifetime's work, it has found a wide audience well outside the field of art history, and has been translated into five languages. John also wrote groundbreaking studies on Turner that transformed our understanding of this artist's approach to painting, showing how its vivid visual qualities do not speak just to the eye, but address both eye and mind in a way that is rich with symbolic and cultural meaning.

  • A young couple dance on the dance floor during an evening party hosted by the Young Conservatives at the annual political party conference of Prime Minister John Major's government. The girl looks seductively at the viewer but the young man has eyes only for her. • Two friends of Hispanic-descent have stopped on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach, Florida to talk with associates while sitting in their SUV 4x4 pick-up-style truck. Each have hold of two Dogo Argentino mastiff puppies, one of which is hanging his chin over through the open window of the vehicle, its long claws also very clearly seen and its freckly nose pointing towards the viewer. The other young animal is being propped up by the car's driver, its belly visible to anyone leaning inside the car. Both dogs are albino-coloured with floppy ears and pink eyes while the two healthy men are dark-skinned and in good-humour, one wearing a singlet vest and prominent silver necklace and the other topless so warm is this summer day.

  • Two party girls are dancing with a male friend who is apparently flirting with the girl holding a packet of cigarettes and an unlit cigarette on the far left. Their body language suggests they know each other. The lady in the middle has red hair and lips and has her eyes closed and is holding a bottle of Hooch, an alcoholic drink. The party venue is dark and chaotic and the atmosphere is energetic and lively at a club venue called Adrenaline Village in Battersea, South London.

  • Lying on her back with eyes closed, a young girl stretches her arms out allowing her father to support her weight in an empty swimming pool in Miami Florida. With complete trust, she lets herself go and yields to her own natural buoyancy as she floats amid this seemingly wide ocean of chlorinated water belonging to a hotel on Ocean Drive. We see her bright red costume clearly against the complimentary prime colour green in a vibrant display from the spectrum. It is a scene of love and confidence, of youth and health.

  • Seen from a low angle inside their open-top classic American car, two openly gay men cuddle up close to look into each other's eyes while holding their favourite cans of Websters Yorkshire bitter (beer). They are attending a classic car rally in Brighton during a Gay Pride festival, that this English seaside town regularly hosts during the hot south coast summers. The large 60s steering wheel is seen in the foreground and the vehicle's leather seat looks shiny clean against the bright light. There is a classic car magazine resting on one man's knee and they are clearly mad about this era of motor transportation.
