  • An aerial view of unidentified islands seen from a regional aircraft passing overhead the atolls and islands to the north Malé, capital of the Indian Ocean Republic of the Maldives. We see the perfectly clear blue sea surrounding the islands and tiny sandbanks of white coral beach sand, all of which are in jeopardy of rising sea levels as global warming makes sea level locations like this vulnerable to being overwhelmed. The only sign of life is the tiny island in the bottom right of frame where holiday resort accommodation ring this dot in the ocean. The Maldives comprise of twenty-six atolls, featuring 1,192 coral islands of which 80 are holiday resorts with 200 inhabited by indigenous communities. This Islamic nation of 298 sq km (115 sq miles), lie seven hundred kilometres (435 miles) south-west of Sri Lanka..

  • Two window cleaners safely attached to an outside cradle, wash the large panes of glass at a building at Broafgate in the City of London. While stretching with his long sponge into the corner of this window, one worker on the left is wiping soapy liquid onto the grimy glass before cleaning it off with a squeegee. His colleague on the right is communicating with the cradle operator in the building's roof, way above these men, in order to raise the cradle and allowing the men to achive the correct operating height. Far below them is the capital's Square Mile, London's financial and oldest area. The famous dome of St Paul's Cathedral can be seen most prominently although it is a grey day across this modern metropoliss skyline.

  • A group of work colleagues, friends and associates gather on a sunlit terrace with a backdrop of the City of London on the opposite, northern shore of the River Thames. People stand with drinks in their hands in the evening summer sunshine and we see the tall Natwest tower and other banking institutions plus the much older Monument on the far right, commemorating the Great Fire of London in 1666, when the old Elizabethan city was burned to the ground, making way for the newer metropolis. But the architecture we see here is largely from the 1980s building boom of the Thatcherism era.

  • An adult business window displays the naughty underwear worn by five mannequin models of a Soho sex shop on Old Compton Street in London's West End. Tilted slightly to the left, we see the 5 models posing in various positions of suggestive stances, all demonstrating the shop's array of erotic clothing for the Good Time Girl! On the far right is the artwork of a topless woman, wearing only knee-length stockings. See from behind, the line-drawing of the female suggests a dancer on a Parisian stage act such as the Folies Bergere or Paradis Latin - variety performances for the male admirer. She looks over her left shoulder as if to wink in our direction, all part of the illusion of coquettish desire and greedy eroticism. Old Compton Street is known for cafes, bars and especially the gay, trans-gender scene and for sellers of erotic toy 'accessories'!

  • Winning and losing contestants line up to receive their prizes at a gymkhana in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. The point of focus is a young cheeky-faced girl adorned with a winners' special rosette and she grins cheekily to her friend alongside. Far right another girl less satisfied inspects her own rosette. The word gymkhana is an Indian Raj term that referred to a place where sporting events took place to test the skill of the competitors. In the UK and east coast of the US, the term gymkhana now almost always refers to an equestrian event for riders on horses, often with the emphasis on children's participation (such as those organised here by the Pony Club). Gymkhana classes include timed speed events such as barrel racing, keyhole, keg race (also known as "down and back"), flag race, and pole bending.

  • A schoolboy of Afro-Caribbean descent stands looking confused on a platform at Victoria mainline station in central London. The young lad looks smart in a new school uniform of cap, blazer, long trousers and polished black shoes. We might guess that it is the start of a new academic year and that he is about to attend a new school for which he needs to take a train on his own. His mother and younger and older sister are also to the far right of the picture so he may go with his elder sibling carrying a multi-coloured umbrella and a bright blue briefcase containing his lunch and a few items needed for lessons. Surrounded by adult commuters, some of who look on with mild amusement, also make await their train from the city out of town. Mostly, people mind their own business and what is a special day for the boy will become a much-travelled route.

  • An athletic man poses against a wall on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach, Florida. This fine specimen of a man wears roller-blades and trousers tucked into his skates with a yellow t-shirt with the word Frequency across his pectoral muscles. His shdow appears across the wall and because of the angle, his shape has been greatly exaggerated, his body becoming a much wider, stockier proportion than the reality. He stands with an arm resting high on the wall and the other on his hip, almost in a feminine manner. He is nonetheless the epitome of maleness, of virility with the healthy physique that women adore and other men are jealous of! The sdidewalk pavement arcs around a corner and the wall with its long shadow is a strong diagonal line across the picture, disappearing to the far right.

  • A young blonde girl of approximately 3 years-old stands on a lawn looking delighted. She giggles with great mirth at something that pleases her - possibly the way her father has posed her as if she's a ballerina, or maybe because it is her birthday and her present is the blue dress she is showing off to the viewer. The girl holds out her arms while holding a special pair of sunglasses. It is the summer of 1967 and this is a housing estate for British soldiers stationed in Bielefeld, Germany still during the Cold War. The girl's father is a solder serving in the British Army and the they all live in a house nearby with other expat families. Kodachrome film has a wonderful magenta colour cast in mid-tones and where a small light-leak has affected the far right, reminiscent of the classic days of early photography when shifts in color gave a faded look.

  • Reflections of Tudor royalty including King Henry the VIII and Jane Seymour appear as ghostly apparitions on a street corner in London's Mayfair. An art gallery exhibition of Tudor portraits, includes a striking picture of an unknown child seen far right who appears to be crossing a zebra-crossing. It looks like a girl but is in fact a young boy of about nine years of age, confusing our perception of gender in the middle-ages. Also, a white traffic direction arrow points around the road's corner as if indicating the location of Queen Jane. They all float just above ground level maiking an eerie and mystical image.

  • A man walks down a street practicing his Three-ball cascade skills. For the three-ball cascade the juggler starts with two balls in one hand and the third ball in the other hand. One ball is thrown from the first hand in an arc to the other hand. Before catching this ball the juggler must throw the ball in the receiving hand, in a similar arc, to the first hand. The pattern continues in this manner with each hand in turn throwing one ball and catching another. All balls are caught on the outside of the pattern (on the far left and right) and thrown from closer to the middle of the pattern. The hand moves toward the middle to throw, and back towards the outside to catch the next object. Because the hands must move up and down when throwing and catching, putting this movement together causes the left hand to move in a counterclockwise motion, and the right hand to move in a clockwise motion.

  • A young girl in transit between India and the US, entertains herself by throwing her pet toy tiger as far as the ceiling in a departure window of Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5. In front of a Boeing 777 jet airliner's nose and cockpit, the girl is a silhouette against the large windows that allow in the natural light. Behind the parked aircraft, another British Airways passenger jet taxies past, its tail at right-angles to the stationary airplane although they both look like the same plane. With her family baggage next to her, the child is enjoying some hours of freedom before another long-haul flight westwards.
