  • Barbara Christie, 58, sits alone in her conservatory at Swordale House overlooking Beinn Na Caillich (The Hill of the Old Woman) mountain. It is nearly dark at this northern latitude and it looks cosy inside this house with its warm and inviting lights. Barbara's father built this family home and she has lived in this house all her life apart from when studying in Edinburgh many years ago. It sits on a tiny road near Broadford on the Isle of Skye, beneath the magnificent hill whose myth goes back to a Norse Princess saga. Barbara sits in the more recent addition to the house, a conservatory that she enjoys sitting and reading away from her Summer Bed and Breakfast guests. Afternoon sunlight pours through a front window into his living room which serves as a shrine to the Sheep. Having already refused a half million Pounds for his house and spectacular view high up on a hill, he prefers to breed his beloved Blackface sheep which he shows only twice a year at local competitions in the Dunvegan area and the prizes and awards are proof of his success. • A long-distance detail of London's telecommunications BT Telecom Tower. The BT Tower is a communications tower located in Fitzrovia, London, owned by BT Group. It has been previously known as the Post Office Tower, the London Telecom Tower and the British Telecom Tower. The main structure is 177 metres (581 ft) tall, with a further section of aerial rigging bringing the total height to 191 metres (627 ft). In 1962, the BT Tower overtook St Paul's Cathedral to become the tallest building in London. Its primary purpose was to support the microwave aerials then used to carry telecommunications traffic from London to the rest of the country, as part of the British Telecom microwave network.

  • The dome of St Paul's Cathedral is seen through a gap in mature ash tree branches, from the London borough of Lambeth to the City of London, approximately 5 miles distant. The large crossing dome is composed of three layers: the first triple dome ever to be constructed. St Paul's Cathedral, London, is a Church of England cathedral and seat of the Bishop of London. Its dedication to Paul the Apostle dates back to the original church on this site, founded in AD 604. St Paul's sits at the top of Ludgate Hill, the highest point in the City of London, and is the mother church of the Diocese of London. The present church dating from the late 17th century was built to an English Baroque design of Sir Christopher Wren, as part of a major rebuilding program which took place in the city after the Great Fire of London, and was completed within his lifetime.

It sits on the shore of Lochbay, on the Waternish peninsula, a few miles from Dunvegan, in the north-west of Skye. Built in the early 19th Century with thick walls of local stone, it was originally the boathouse for the Waternish Estate. In the early 1970's it was converted into a house by the singer Donovan and now combines modern comfort with the character of an unmistakably old building.

  • Household refuse pollutes a coral beach on Meedu Island, an indigenous community in the Republic of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean. Packaging, foodstuffs and general waste has been tossed away on this otherwise beautiful place, north of the capital Male. Unfortunately, the practice of tossing away one's rubbish is a normal practice in this culture, the local people selfishly unconcerned about the future of their habitat and the health of their community. Only a few miles from Meedu are islands that serve as holiday resorts where families from Europe travel by air for the perffect vacation - unaware that fly-tipping is so widespread that it threatens this nation's worldwide status as a paradise on earth..

  • Decorator and part-time chimney sweep Alan Squires prepares to apply another coat of emulsion paint to the exterior walls of a cottage called Burnside in the tiny hamlet of Hallin, Waternish, on the Isle of Skye, Scottish Highlands. With his shadow looming large on the newly-painted off-white pebbledash that is rendered a warm orange in the low sunlight, Alan walks with his long roller after a day's decorating in this beautiful place near Dunvegan. Alan is an Englishman who came to Skye in 1987 for the community spirit. "everybody knows everybody' he says though admits that southerners come from the south in search of an idyllic lifestyle but harsh winters often send them back to warmer climates. Alain's fresh paint therefore needs to dry before winter weather blows in from the Atlantic. Image taken for the 'UK at Home' book project published 2008.

In Egypt, sugar cane juice is called aseer asab and is by far the most popular drink served by almost all fruit juice vendors, who are abundant in most cities. It is sold by roadside vendors, where the juice is squeezed fresh when ordered. Raw sugar cane juice can be a health risk to drinkers due to the unhygienic conditions under which it is prepared. There are some diseases that can be transmitted by raw sugar-cane like Leptospirosis

  • Across the calm waters of a Scottish bay, isolated houses and crofts sit before the dramatic Cuillin Mountains that rise up in the distance on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. Sunlight from unusually fine weather spreads across this beautiful landscape seen from the road to Dunvegan, near the hamlet of Harlosh. Farming practices have changed irreversably in a generation and many southerners have English accents rather than that of native Scots islanders as city dwellers from the far south seek an alternative to urban lifestyles. The weather can have adverse effects on those unprepared for such wild conditions, especially during harsh winters when violent storms batter these Atlantic coasts. But old crofts have been converted to bed and breakfast homes, catering for tourist visitors who adore this form of idyllic escapism.

Stretched across a bridge near the Riverbank Arena where the Hockey games are played, the British Olympic organisation (LOCOG) hope that as the tally for gold medals climbed, British youth will be inspired enough to take up sport when declining spending and interest has been a national issue. In times of austerity, schools and sports clubs had their budgets for sport reduced and Team GB's success raised more concerns for the future of British youth as potential medal winners.

Looking over his shoulder into the distance, the walker is alone on his solo pursuit along some of Britain's most beautiful coastlines, here on the south coast. The rolling downland stretches westwards - its white chalk cliffs famous for symbolising England's southern limits. Tennyson Down is a hill at the west end of the Isle of Wight just south of Totland. Tennyson Down is a grassy, whale-backed ridge of chalk which rises to 482 ft/147m above sea level. Tennyson Down is named after the poet Lord Tennyson who lived at nearby Farringford House for nearly 40 years. The poet used to walk on the down almost every day, saying that the air was worth 'sixpence a pint'.

Birds such as Coot, Mallard, Moorhen, Tern and Grebe are all surviving thanks to investment and a commitment to protect native species. Barton Broad is the largest Broad in the Ant Valley. Round bales, which typically weigh 300 to 400 kilograms (660–880 lb), are more moisture-resistant, and pack the hay more densely (especially at the center). Round bales are quickly fed with the use of mechanized equipment.

  • Built on rocks once surrounded by sea, Dunvegan Castle is home to Hugh MacLeod, Chief of the ancient clan MacLeod on the north-west corner of the Isle of Skye, Scottish Highlands. Hugh is the 30th encumbent of the McLeods and this has been the clan's traditional stronghold and ancestral home for 800 years which makes it the longest inhabited family home in Scotland. Now a visitor centre and place of pilgrimage for MacLeods from all over the world, it houses medieval artefacts from when Scotland was a wild and warring nation against the English. It has survived clan battles, extremes of feast and famine and profound social, political and economic changes in the Highlands. Originally designed to keep people out, Dunvegan Castle was first opened to the public in 1933. Visitors include Sir Walter Scott, Dr Johnson, Queen Elizabeth II and Emperor Akihito.

  • The outline of a generic airliner passes overhead as it takes-off at London Heathrow airport. With the strong shape of its aerodynamic surfaces, its wings and lowered flaps to gain maximum lift at this sea level atmosphere. The jet's undercarriage wheels are still lowered and the circular jet engines are clearly defined by strong sunlight. The airline operator is anonymous as is the manufacturer of the aircraft as it contunues its journey under blue skies to a faraway destination.
