  • Three dads are looking their respective children of varying ages - from a baby to an infant and 8-year old. In the foreground a father reads his tabloid newspaper as his toddler sleeps contentedly in its pushchair, a dummy in the mouth and a blanket scross its body to keep out a chilly breeze. Further back another man stands waiting for his partner with a baby, also asleep in the buggy. And thirdly, a male pushes his daughter in pink up a small slope on a bicycle that uses stablizers. It is a busy scene on Paignton seafront on the Devon coast. Elsewhere children and adults of all ages walk along the esplanade enjoying an overcast and windy day on holiday. This theatrical scene is about the ideal father and the family unit.

  • A young girl of approximately 9 years of age plays with her father. With window light falling across the dad and girl, the two are both dressed in shades of blue - the father with darker skin than his daughter. They are both Tamil refugees from the Indian Ocean Island of Sri Lanka and have escaped the civil war there where their ethnic group is being dangerously persecuted by the Singhalese majority. The family have recently arrived in Britain seeking political asylum and are temporarily housed in a bare council flat in Chalk Farm in North London. The girl reaches up to touch the man's moustache and he lets her grab his mouth in a playful respite from their life-changing circumstances.

  • Father Peter Geldard sits in his former Anglican Church near Faversham, England. He sits in a pew clasping his hands together and looking away as if lost in thought, the Christian cross and altar in the distance. Geldard is known for his stance against the Church of England's vote allowing the ordination of women priests in 1992, causing a huge row with Anglican church worshippers. Clergy, including five bishops, eventually left to join the Catholic Church including Father Geldard, who led the opposition and became a notorious debater, campaigner, and general nuisance to the church. He eventually resigned from his Anglican orders, moved out of his vicarage house and along with thirty-five members of his former parish (including the churchwardens and all the members of the parish council), now attends Mass at the Catholic church in Faversham. .

  • An unidentified father in the act of pouring coffee from a cafetiere into two metallic silver mugs in while holding his sleeping baby son in his London kitchen. The unconscious child is a few months old and the parent stands expertly holding both hot liquid and infant as if juggling pleasure and parenthood simultaneously. The sleeping child is limp in the father's arm and is dressed in the same scarlet red as the vibrant colour on the wall behind. We only see the man's upper-legs and torso but the baby is tiny against his body making the scale of both young and old. otherwise, the generic room is bare of decoration or possessions - only a drying cloth and chopping board is seen on the draining board, near plain white tiles.

  • Aboard the Carnival cruise ship Ecstasy, a father and son are practicing wearing life-preservers during the first few hours of their voyage from Miami around the Gulf of Mexico. They and every passenger on-board are being instructed by members of the ship's crew to muster (gather) in specific locations around the vessel before heading further out to sea. Under international law, everyone on a holiday ship like this needs to know what do in the event of an emergency at sea so well-organised drills are rehearsed on deck. The baby looks uncomfortable wrapped in his life vest but sucks on a pacifier dummy. The father looks relaxed in the knowledge that their lives are not risk on this occasion. The Panamanian-registered MS Ecstasy is a 70,367 ton cruise ship carrying 2,052 passengers and 920 crew belonging to Vegas-style Carnival Cruise lines.

  • A father chases a runaway tyre (tire) along the wet sand before it crashes into the man's young child, otherwise unaware of the impending impact. Seen from a low angle, we see the graphic cruciform shape of the aircraft as it screams past two powerful airfield landing lights that help guide arriving aircraft to the runway. The backlit scene is largely monochrome apart from the boys red t-shirt and yellow-faced watch which are lit by flash, underexposing the overcast sky. Prior to 9/11, British airport authorities and police tolerated plane spotters near runway fences but with heightened terrorist alerts, these enthusiasts are told to move on or face arrest. Faced with the closure of its local library, Lambeth council plan to close the facility used by the community as part of austerity cuts, saying they will convert the building into a gym and privately-owned gentrified businesses - rather than a much-loved reading and learning resource. £12,600 was donated by the American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie to help build the library which opened in 1906. It is a fine example of Edwardian civic architecture, built with red Flettan bricks and terracotta, listed as Grade II in 1981.
