  • A visitor to the General Electric (GE) exhibition stand at Britain's Farnborough Air Show, points to a feature on a massive, GE90-115B turbofan jet engine. Powering Boeing 777 airliners with up to 115,000 Pounds of thrust, this is a state-of-the-art engine that entered service in April 2004 with Air France. Its giant blades are lit with blue stage lighting to make it look iconic and imposing, dominating this picture of technology and innovation. Such mechanical excellence attached to the world's aircraft are helping to make them quieter and more energy and fuel efficient at a time when oil prices are making air travel an expensive mode of transport.

The highlight of a high sun glints off the wet pavement as 55 Choreoswitch waterswitches made by Ocmis are linked to 11 pumps located in a purpose built basement plant room beneath the Plaza. The switches are linked to a unit that also controls the 110 colour changing LED lights integrated into the nozzle housings. Displays can be fast and energetic with dramatic colours or subdued and gentle. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009). .

  • Seen through the window of Coates Wine Bar which contains small square patterns of frosted glass, the arched structure of Broadgate offices in the City of London, appears beyond. Trees whose leaves are turning into autumnal colour can also be seen blending into the landscape. Broadgate is a vast estate of office buildings developed in the Thatcher years, sitting astride the redeveloped Liverpool Street mainline station. We see the classic architectural feature that gives strength to large buildings - the load-bearing arch.

Seen in close-up, the single and plural word 'Letters' is printed in upper-case capitals on the flap that one must lift to insert postal mail from the outside of this heavy, glossy black doors in the seaside town of Lowestoft in Suffolk, England. The brass plate sits in its fitted slot and has been carefully polished these last decades to ensure it still looks as handsome as it might have some time in the Victorian era when brass door knockers and other elaborate fittings were fixed to houses, showing true quality craftsmanship - a factor largely ignored in the mass-produced products of today.

An arc of these neon-lit codes form an arch on a panel near one of the 1,500 semi mature trees. Illuminated in a sequence, they are all lit here before the sequence re-starts and they all become dimmed. Terminal 5 was created by the Richard Rogers Partnership (now Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners) and has the capacity to serve around 30 million passengers a year. In the centre is the torso that sits on top of two feet with the wings splaying out to the window. The main architecture was created by the Richard Rogers Partnership (now Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners) and opened in 2008 after a cost of £4.3 billion. Terminal 5 has the capacity to serve around 30 million passengers a year. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009). .
