  • As flames ignite under the engine, firefighters attend a car fire in central London. A Ford car has caught fire in its engine compartment during the evening and firemen have been called to attend. With the bonnet open, fire is still seen beneath the engine and near front tyres where fuel and oil may be ready to ignite too. Pointing a hose into the seat of the fire, a firefighter sprays a pressured jet of water into the affected area.

  • A Libyan exile burns a picture of dictator Colonel Gaddafi during protests opposite London Libyan embassy during the country's 2011 uprising. Holding up the picture of the man blamed for atrocities and for a 42-year history of oppression to his people, the flames lick around the paper, ready to engulf his image. In the background we see the pre-revolutionary flag that Libyans have adopted as their new flag after Gaddafi's downfall.

  • It is 1985 and a farmer walks along a line of long, combustible straw and with a pitchfork and smouldering straw, sets fire to the organic material in an Essex field, southern England. It is late summer and the harvested corn has left behind short stubble which the farmer sets ablaze. This now restricted practice of destroying cereal straw and stubble by flame was stopped by the introduction of The Crop Residues (Burning) Regulations of 1993 which now restricts farmers on burning crop materials, including residues of oilseed rape, field beans and peas, except in very limited circumstances, e.g. for disease control where a plant health order has been served. The burning of straw and stubble also deprives the soil of valuable organic material and releases greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. ..

  • "One candle." A family are gathered to celebrate the first birthday of a young child, the back garden of her parent's south London home. The birthday girl reaches out to touch the single lit candle on a chocolate log cake while her grandmother and mother both show her how to blow and extinguish the flame instead. Friends and relatives are sat around the garden on a perfect late-summer afternoon, drinking and laughing on this joyous occasion, a milestone in the first year of any young life. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • Still in the era of being able to smoke inside public places, an elderly gentleman extinguishes his match by waving it in the air to blow out the flame, exhaling and listening to a fellow-drinker in a Newport pub in south Wales. Clouds of smoke can be seen as they waft against the back light that filters through the windows of this smoky bar in the town centre. Pints of bitter are on the table in front of them and ash trays with used butts. The scene is of an industrial town's pub for working men where language is sharp and there is talk of realities of hard lives.

  • Standing behind barriers opposite Prime Minister Brown's Downing Street in Whitehall, the heart of Britain's governmental district in Westminster, some of the thousands of pro-Tibet protesters angrily shout their messages to 80 torchbearing personalities who ran 31 miles through the UK capital's streets. We see them holding images of dead Tibetans, killed by Chinese forces during the most recent crackdown in Lhasa and holding placards with anti-Chinese messages. Amid chaotic scenes across London and Paris where mass-arrests and civil disobedience marked what was planned as a pre-Olympic carnival, the IOC's event proved a disaster for Chinese organisers. 37 were arrested but these facts were blanked from official TV screens which showed only the calm personlities who carried in turn the Olympic flame.

  • A hot air balloon is partially inflated before flight at Longleat Estate, Warminster, England. Using firstly cold air from a gas-powered fan, before its propane burners are used for final inflation, one of the ground crew assists in the process by pulling at the fragile synthetic material so that the volume within the whole 'envelope' can fill without damage and it's spectrum arc of colours are becoming rainbow-like. The hot air balloon is the oldest successful human-carrying flight technology. The first manned flight was made by Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and François Laurent d'Arlandes in a balloon created by the Montgolfier brothers in 1783. In today's sport balloons the envelope is generally made from nylon fabric and the mouth of the balloon (closest to the burner flame) is made from fire resistant material such as Nomex.

The solar power gathers in strength and intensity as it climbs from below the horizon and behind buildings, its circular disc a flaming yellow which is soon to turn a deeper hue over the capital's red skies. A crane from a nearby construction project tells about the regeneration of London's East End during the early 1990s when the Thatcherite heyday in house and office building accelerated the demand for homes and headquarters during the economic boom.
