  • An individual is selling their flat privately for £10,000 + cash on the A202 Peckham Road. Without using an established high street estate agent (realtor) the owner called Nathan has left his own sign attached to railings outside a block of flats on this main road between Camberwell and Peckham in south London. He describes the property as a 2 bed apartment and unusually for London, complete with garage space.

  • A rather rotund man wearing a flat cap, a checked shirt under braces that keep his ample trousers up above his fat tummy, affectionately tickled his pet dog, a Whippet ,who stands still with two paws on his master's large leg. It is a bright day on the beach at Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, England. Bathers are running on the sand in the background and the man and his dog are content to watch the world go by from their promenade bench. Their is a great deal of trust and love these two have for each other - the gentleman having brought his dog on holiday to the seaside with him, rather than leave him with friends or in kennels. The dog is healthy, lithe and obviously has great speed in those muscular legs, vastly different to the man, whose frame is heavy and slow.

  • 30th Chief of the ancient clan MacLeod, Hugh MacLeod, 34, eats a hasty Saturday breakfast in his private flat at Dunvegan Castle, Maureen Byers on the north-west corner of the Isle of Skye, Scottish Highlands. Dunvegan has been the clan's traditional stronghold and ancestral home for 800 years which makes it the longest inhabited family home in Scotland. Now a visitor centre and place of pilgrimage for MacLeods from all over the world, it houses medieval artefacts from when Scotland was a wild and warring nation against the English. It has survived clan battles, extremes of feast and famine and profound social, political and economic changes in the Highlands. Originally designed to keep people out, Dunvegan Castle was first opened to the public in 1933. Visitors include Sir Walter Scott, Dr Johnson, Queen Elizabeth II and Emperor Akihito.

  • Two young men dressed in office suits casually stuff their lunches during a hot lunchtime break in the Broadgate Estate in the City of London. Both with legs across knees, the lads in their 20s sit on a bench beneath a tree alongside the statue of a traditional gardener, slightly bent and equipped with hoe and wearing a wastecoat, hobnailed boots and flat cap, an iconic salt-of-the-earth workman. This scene suggests the social divisions of the working man: Of the young, educated post-war generation whose opportunities have afforded them a faster lifestyle, far removed from that of the physically-exhausted man whose life has been spent working the honest land. The English social divide is clearly represented here as the harshness of the manual labourer versus the youth of today, seen in the middle of the modern city.

  • The message in graffiti lettering "Don't come here they attack you" has been written on a wall outside a house in the Toxteth area of Liverpool, Merseyside England. Flat 1A has a bright red-painted door and red bricks in an otherwise poverty-stricken district of this poor inner-city where crime and social deprivation has become the normal way of life for Scouses (someone from Liverpool). We see the red theme carried throughout this image of threat and ill-discipline where survival is clearly hard. These 'back to back' terraced houses have largely been demolished during Liverpool's regeneration during the 60s and 70s though some remain, accommodating unfortunate families on low-income.

  • Lying horizontal in a Budapest scrap yard are two Communist-era statues that were toppled along with the fall of the Hungarian Socialist state in March 1990. In the foreground is the statue of the once-hated Hungarian local Communist Ferenc Munnich who participated in the 1956 Hungarian revolution, then a member of the 'Revolutionary Worker-Peasant Government', the Workers' Militia and then defence minister and earning himself the Order of Lenin in 1967. After Hungary's transition to a democracy, he has been dumped horizontally on a wooden frame, sliced off its original plinth at the feet and painted red, awaiting its fate. In fact this statue is now located in the theme park called Szoborpark (Statue Park) in the south of the city where he shares a political tourist landscape of 42 pieces of art from the Communist era between 1945 and 1989.

  • High above the streets of Old Lisbon, we see a Portuguese lady leaning out of her window to hang out her washing on the line that is attached to her home's exterior wall in the Bairro Alto district - or Upper City - the oldest of Lisbon's residential quarters. Items of underwear, socks and other miscellaneous clothing have been strung out on the line that is now pegged along the crumbling wall's surface with faded, peeling plaster and paint. A TV aerial has also been fixed precariously by the window and it's shadow can be seen in the sunshine which is strong and side-lighting the scene which has a warm, morning glow about it. Lisbon's Bairro Alto quarter is located above Baixa and developed in the 16th Century. Suffering very little damage in the earthquake of 1755, it remains the area of most character and renowned for its residential and working quarter for craftsmen and shopkeepers. At night, life takes on a diferent personality when bars and up until the 60s, prostitution gave the district a bad reputation in the past but nowadays tourists and the chic frequent its streets and traditional 'Fado' (classical Portuguese opera) bars. ...

It is dusk near the equator and soon dark. The landscape is barren except for some young trees on the waterfront where two people are walking in the cool tropical air. Seen in the last, darkening light of day, the player leaps upwards and his arm stays where his ball left his hand to roll around the ring. The man is enjoying some leisure time at the end of his working day, possibly an employee of CMF who handle newly-caught tuna fish for export to the EU and the UK's supermarket food industry.

  • A lone sleeping passenger rests on a bench in an otherwise peaceful corner of Gatwick airport in England. Having chosen a quiet location in the terminal, near departure number gate 44, there is enough space to stretch out and grab some valuable sleep. Jet lag, medically referred to as desynchronosis, is a physiological condition which results from alterations to the body's circadian rhythms resulting from rapid long-distance transmeridian (east–west or west–east) travel on a (typically jet) aircraft. It was previously classified as one of the circadian rhythm sleep disorders.

  • A woman in her late 20s crouches down to paint the bare wood of a window frame in a Victorian terraced home. Wearing blue work overalls and brandishing a narrow width paint brush with white wood primer on its hairs, the lady works away in a rear room of this house that overlooks similar aged properties in south London, England. The sash-style window is up and open so that fresh air helps dry this coat of paint. Furniture has been cleared from the room - a back of the house upstairs bathroom.

  • A filthy alleyway in Toxteth, Liverpool amid socially-deprived streets and terraced housing. Graffiti of girls' names has been painted on to the brick wall of a tenement building but is now peeling off. Weeds have grown around the cobbled pavement and the windows are boarded up in a landscape of urban dereliction and social depravity.

  • It is 1985 and a farmer walks along a line of long, combustible straw and with a pitchfork and smouldering straw, sets fire to the organic material in an Essex field, southern England. It is late summer and the harvested corn has left behind short stubble which the farmer sets ablaze. This now restricted practice of destroying cereal straw and stubble by flame was stopped by the introduction of The Crop Residues (Burning) Regulations of 1993 which now restricts farmers on burning crop materials, including residues of oilseed rape, field beans and peas, except in very limited circumstances, e.g. for disease control where a plant health order has been served. The burning of straw and stubble also deprives the soil of valuable organic material and releases greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. ..

  • An elderly lady resident of a tower block, watches the outside world from her high-rise window, overlooking the Middlesex Estate in the City of London. A window box with geraniums is by the glass and she peeers down to a bleak urban estate, empty of human contact or friendly neighbours. She lives alone in this grim place but she is looking after herself showing brushed hair , a lace top and lipstick. The world outside is a depressingly empty landscape of concrete walkways and garage doors, an inner-city environment devoid of human interaction or friendliness..
